3 PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors. The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport. BREED CLASSES Regular Classes: (Same Classes for Bitches) Puppy Dog 6 mos & under 9 mos Bred By Exhibitor Dog Puppy Dog 9 mos & under 12 mos American Bred Dog Junior Dog 12 mos & under 18 mos Open Dog Winners Dog Best of Breed Competition Non-Regular Classes: (Same classes for Bitches - Winners of these classes will compete for Best of Breed) Veteran Dog, 7 9 yrs Veteran Dog, 9-11 yrs Veteran Dog, 11+ yrs Neutered Dogs and Spayed Bitches may compete in the Veterans Classes only at independent specialties and by virtue of winning the class may compete for Best of Breed. (AKC Dog Show Rules, Chapter 14, Section 8.) After the conclusion of Best of Breed, the Best Veteran Dog and the Best Veteran Bitch will compete for Best Veteran in Specialty Show. PUPPY SWEEPSTAKES RULES FOR SWEEPSTAKES: Champions of record will not be eligible to compete. NO Professional Handlers may be allowed to handle dogs in the Sweepstakes, even if they bred the puppy. Entry in the Sweepstakes must be made at the same time and on the same entry form as entry into the regular classes, by indicating in the box for Additional Classes your entry into the appropriate Sweepstakes class and age division. All dogs MUST be entered in the Regular show classes. SWEEPSTAKES CLASSIFICATIONS (for both dogs and bitches): Puppy 6-9 mos. Puppy 9-12 mos Junior mos.. VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES RULES FOR VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES: Veteran Sweepstakes is open to all Staffordshire Bull Terriers seven (7) years of age and older. NO Professional Handlers may be allowed to handle dogs in the Sweepstakes, even if they bred the dog..dogs entered in Veteran Sweepstakes are not required to be entered in any other regular or non-regular class. Champions of Record and altered dogs and bitches are eligible. Enter Veteran Sweepstakes with the appropriate age class on the entry form. A $3.00 per entry AKC Event Service Fee and a Recording Fee of 50 cents on the first entry only will be required for each dog entered at any Licensed or Member Club Show, Obedience Trial, or Tracking Test. This Recording Fee is to be collected by the Show-giving club and paid to the American Kennel Club. (American Kennel Club Rule, Chapter 14, Section 2.) There is no Recording Fee or Event Service Fee for Junior Showmanship, Sweepstakes, Futurities, Brace/Team, Multi-Dog Classes or Special Attractions. All dogs present must be held on leash except when in the obedience ring, in the exercising area or crated. Dogs must be ready for judging. The Club will not be responsible or obligated to furnish any service for notifying exhibitors or their agents of Breed or Class judging. Judges need not wait for any dog holding up a class. Owners or agents alone are responsible for the presence of their dogs in the judging rings. CASH PRIZES will be paid in the ring to the person showing the dog. Claims for prize money must be made in the ring before judging of that breed is over, and the Show Secretary's Office advised at once. The Show Secretary and Show-giving Club disclaim any liability for cash prizes after the judging of the breed is over. Non-Regular Breed Classes for single dog entries to be judged after Winners but before Best of Breed. These classes must be divided by sex. Veterans Class (Breed or Obedience) - For dogs and bitches at least 7 years of age. No entry shall be made and no entry shall be accepted which specifies any condition as to its acceptance. Judging schedule and map to the show site will be mailed as soon as possible after the closing of entries. No dog may be permanently removed from the show before it is judged, except by consent of the Show Secretary upon a veterinarian's recommendation for removal. The Show-giving Club, Show Secretary, their agents, employees, etc. assume no responsibility for any loss, damage or injury sustained by exhibitors, handlers, or any of their dogs, or property, and further assume no responsibility for injury to children. NOTICE: You are responsible for damage in your room. Clean up after your dogs and repair any grassy areas your dog may dig up. THIS WILL BE ENFORCED WITH A POSSIBLE FINE AS WELL AS A POSSIBLE BENCH HEARING. Selling dogs: Will not be allowed on the show grounds. NO UNENTERED DOGS ALLOWED AT THE SHOW SITE - NO PUPPIES ALLOWED THAT ARE NOT ENTERED IN THE SHOW The welfare of an exhibitor s child is assumed to be the responsibility of the exhibitor, it is distinctly understood that exhibitors will exercise control and restraint over their children on the days of the show. The exhibitor is also responsible for any damage done by the exhibitor s child. There will be a holding area set up outside of each ring that can be utilized during your judging. This area must be vacated as soon as judging is over. NOTE: All Rules and Regulations used during the Saturday & Sunday shows are applicable to the shows on Friday. 8 5
