R.I.P It is with regret to advise you of the passing of Anne Wild, former wife of ex Doggie and WOD Hylton Wild. The funeral was conducted by Bruce Jarvie at the Traditional Funerals Chapel, Burpengary on Thursday 3rd December 2015 at 1130hrs. The Association has passed on their condolences to Hylton on this sad occasion. Message from Glen Andrews 2 G'day Ray, dated 21st September 2015 I have not long been out of hospital after having my prostrate removed after tests revealed an advanced stage of cancer. Luckily the urologist pushed to get me into hospital and treated. They report that they got all the cancer and that it was confined to the prostrate. Hopefully I am now cancer free. Sandy & I were hoping to make it to South Australia for ANZAC Day. At this time it is only a possibility as the Doctor says it could take between six & twelve months to get over this operation. About all for the moment, take care. Best Wishes, Glenn On the Farm with Guy Burton Latest addition - "Mac" (short for "Big Mac" (Eventually...) - new Bull Calf (good size) borne to "Missy Moo" late yesterday. 14 th September A Drought Master bull (Rambo), out of a Jersey (maiden) heifer.
President s Report 3 On Thursday 8 th October 2015, in conjunction with AWAMO, there was an unveiling of a War Animal Monument in Canberra at the Australian War Memorial. This will be the first official Government War Animal Monument in Australia and was be opened by the Director of the Australian War Memorial the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson. In attendance were Ray Thomas, Dennis Lewis, Phil Essam, Geoff Dove and Mark Schefe. On the 11 th November I represented the RDHA in the unveiling of a War Dog Memorial in Hughenden, North Queensland. I would like to thank Wayne Caldwell, the President of the Hughenden RSL and the people of Hughenden for their hospitality during my stay. Kim Hodges and I were at the RSPCA s when the most prestigious animal bravery award was bestowed upon Smoky, a tiny Yorkshire Terrier who served in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II, at am on Tuesday 17 th November at RSPCA Queensland s Wacol Campus. Smoky not only performed numerous acts of bravery in the field, but she also became what was probably the first posttraumatic stress canine. I attended the Graduation of Basic Course no 0004 AFSEC on the 26 th November There were 16 graduates, 12 from the RAAF and four from the Army. The RDHA Most Improved award went to ACW Kirstie Glindemann and MWD Val who are posted to 1SECFOR RAAF Williamtown. The unveiling of a War Animal Memorial was on Saturday 28 th November at the Caloundra RSL. Five MWD Handlers and dogs attended from 2SECFOR Amberley along with three Gap Year personal. I read a poem written by Ian Coats called The Soldiers Dog. Ian is the official artist for the SASR Regiment. Lourie Watts who is the Director of AWAMO and the Australian Light Horse Association. After the unveiling we were all invited to the Sub-Branch bar including RaDHA who was a big hit with all the patrons. It was a great day. Don t forget that the first Indigenous Light Horse Memorial on Saturday 19th December commencing at 10:00am at Springwood Park, north of the Gold Coast, QLD. There should be a big media coverage for this event. For those in the area please attend if you can. The ANZAC weekend in Adelaide is coming along very well with permission from the Plympton Glenelg RSL to attend the Dawn Service at Moseley Square, Glenelg, the RSL Adelaide to march in the city and the support from the Commanding Officer 3SECFOR SQN (RAAF Doggies) to march behind a Flight of Military Working Dogs, Explosive Detector Dogs and their handlers. Kol Kajanto and Kev Couzner are doing a great job in procuring venues for the weekend. More information will be distributed when it comes to hand. In conjunction with the Pack Get Together, you will have to find your own accommodation (a list of accommodation is in the September newsletter). The guys and girl in Adelaide are sorting out venues for lunches/dinners around the Glenelg district with a day trip vineyard tour including lunch/dinner. The weekend will commence on the night of Friday 22 nd April with a meet and greet and will end after the ANZAC Day march on the Monday 25 th April So, book your accommodation and flights early to save disappointment. It has been confirmed by the Adelaide RSL, that we will be marching behind the Military Working Dogs on the day. I would like to thank SGT John Kingston for his work and devotion towards the RDHA whilst on the Committee. John has now been promoted to FSGT (which he deferred for twelve months so he could stay with the EDD s). John is posted to 34SQN Canberra as the Unit Security Officer,, with effect 16th November 2015 He will be traveling around the world with various VIP s as the Australian Security Liaison Officer (ASLO) for three years. 12 A First for Aircraft Security Flight Lieutenant Jason Gillon, Officer in Charge of the current Force Protection Flight for the Middle East Combat Support Unit, said AFSEC members bring their expertise of airfield security operations to the team. It s an exciting time for those serving as part of the evolving Security Forces trade within the RAAF following the first enduring employment of Air Force Security (AFSEC) personnel on Aircraft Security Operations (ASO) in the Middle East. ASO duties involve protecting aircraft, crew, passengers and cargo on the ground and during flights across the area of operations, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Flight Lieutenant Jason Gillon, Officer in Charge of the current Force Protection Flight for the Middle East Combat Support Unit, said AFSEC members bring their expertise of airfield security operations to the team. The AFSEC members join with our Airfield Defence Guards and Air Force Police personnel to make a complete security package, he said. The Airfield Defence Guards bring a war-fighter capability to the protection of people and assets in potentially hostile situations, while the Air Force police have excellent skills for managing and deescalating situations. The AFSEC personnel deal with base and aircraft security everyday back in Australia, so they have a finely detailed knowledge of the overall planning and running of Air Force security operations. Leading Aircraftsman Sean Gillett is normally an AFSEC dog handler in Australia; however he has left his best friend at home to take on the job of aircraft security. It s taken a lot of training to be deployed in the ASO role, he said. However, the results have been worth it. My job is more dynamic: previously I would have had to stay on a base guarding empty planes. Now I get to fly with the aircraft rather than watch it fly away." Working with the pilots, air specialists and logisticians also has given broader insight into what Air Force does as an organisation. After all, that s what Air Force is all about - using aircraft and people to get the job done. 12 DON T FORGET IF YOU CHANGE ANY OF YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS EG: ADDRESS, , PHONE NUMBERS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECEIVE ANY CORROSPONDANCE FROM THE RDHA. 20 RSPCA s highest award for Yorkie Doodle Dandy 20 The RSPCA s most prestigious animal bravery award will be bestowed upon Smoky, a tiny Yorkshire Terrier who served in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II, at am on Tuesday 17 th November at RSPCA Queensland s Wacol Campus. Smoky not only performed numerous acts of bravery in the field, but she also became what was probably the first post-traumatic stress canine. The RSPCA Australia Purple Cross Award was established in 1993 to recognise the deeds of animals who have shown outstanding service to humans, particularly where they have demonstrated exceptional courage by risking their own safety or life to save a person from injury or death. Since its inception, only nine animals have been awarded the prestigious award. A 1.81 kg (4 lbs.), 180 mm high (7 tall) Smoky was found on March 1944 in a foxhole in the jungles of New Guinea by an American soldier. The soldier was not fond of dogs, and eventually she was sold to Corporal William (Bill) Wynne for two Australian pounds. She spent the next 18 months backpacking and going on combat flights with Corporal Wynne. She also learnt to parachute. Smoky became a hero in January, 1945 when, on Luzon Island in the Philippines, she helped engineers to lay a teletype wire beneath the 70 foot wide airstrip. She was put into an 8 inch diameter pipe with a kite string tied to her collar so that a telephone line could be attached to it and delivered to the opposite side of the airstrip. Corporal Wynne called the tiny dog from the far end of the pipe, and despite darkness and many blockages of sand and soil which left her with only a few inches of headroom, she was able to achieve this feat within two minutes. Her efforts turned what would have otherwise been a three day dangerous exercise into a only several minutes, enabling the airfield to remain open so that 40 planes and 250 ground crew personnel were not exposed to enemy fire. At one point during his service, Corporal Wynne ended up in a New Guinea hospital with Dengue Fever. It was here that nurses took Smoky on their rounds with them. It was during this time Smoky became the first therapy dog of record. Her work with wounded soldiers helped many to cope with the terrible injuries they received, and the horrific sights they had seen. Smoky served at the U.S. 109th Fleet Hospital and at the 42nd General Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Smoky was credited with 12 combat missions and awarded eight battle stars. She was smuggled back into the United States in a specially designed flight oxygen mask carrying case, and went to live and work with Bill in Cleveland, Ohio. Often known as Yorkie Doodle Dandy Smoky spent the rest of her life as a medical therapy dog, being the first dog to visit hospitals, nursing homes and orphanages. She also entertained on a weekly local television show with Bill Wynne, performing new tricks on every show. Smoky has six monuments dedicated to her in the USA, and two in Australia. Smoky passed away in 1957 at the age of 14, and was laid to rest in the Cleveland, Ohio Metroparks. Her owner Bill Wynne, age 93 and still residing in Mansfield, Ohio, is thrilled that Smoky has now been awarded the RSPCA s most prestigious award. RSPCA Queensland President Andrew Tribe will present the award to Nigel Allsopp, author of Smoky the War Dog and a close friend of Bill Wynne.
21 A member of the Alliance of Defence Service Organisations MONTHLY UPDATE September 2015 UPDATE is an e-letter produced by the Defence Force Welfare Association to inform the Service and ex-service communities of those current issues that are of most concern to them. Distribution is intended to a wide audience that includes all members of the Alliance of Defence Service Organisations, and their families and supporters. INTRODUCTION Firstly, a sincere apology to those who may have missed receiving our regular Updates over the last several months. Busting nine ribs, puncturing a lung and mending numerous bruises all as a result of a motor vehicle accident put an interim dent into the reporting process. As I know that there are a multitude of issues of concern to many, here goes with a re-start to reporting on them each in turn. Not before extending a big thanks to many in our sizable readership group who sent me get well messages for a speedy return to good health!! What to Expect (in this Update) So, what has been newsworthy that should have caught the attention of most by now? Three major issues quickly come to mind. But an overpowering one first! Who could have predicted at the start of September, a leadership spill that would see in a new Prime Minister and bear witness to tumultuous changes to the portfolios of those with either Defence or veterans affairs responsibilities. Most readers will be aware via blanket press coverage of what those changes have involved. Judging by the flow of social media comment into my inbox, the one change that seems to have caught the veterans community off guard is not so much the appointment of the Hon Stuart Robert as the next Minister for Veterans Affair, rather his adjunct appointment of Minister for Human Services as well. Rightful concern flowed liberally about the dichotomy those appointments represented in a Minister holding both a DVA-type portfolio together with a Centrelink and Medicare-based one all at the same time. On the surface, the arrangement seems incongruous. While the matter is being taken up with the Minister himself, and will be taken up with the Prime Minister, there is no even implied evidence or suggestion that the independence of Veterans Affairs will be somehow subsumed, or that DVA will either lose or degrade its ability to focus on anything else other than to support veterans and those issues which are important to them. If anything, there is good reason to think that the unified voice of the leadership group that makes up the Alliance of Defence Service Organisations (ADSO), now numbering 13 of the most senior ex service associations
in Australia, will play an influential part in encouraging the relevant Minister and his colleagues to improve services not degrade them. More will be reported in the coming month or two. It should not be lost on anyone that ADSO leaders meet regularly with a Ministerial group to thrash out issues at the highest level, and there is every expectation that those so-to-speak, round tables will continue going forward. As for other issues, there was the drawn out pay case earlier in the year that witnessed the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal s (DFRT) amend the paucity of its original 1.5% pay offer to a more reasonable 2%, this time without the need for that offer to be literally paid for by the loss of some leave provisions. Is it a major worry that the process took five months? Yes it is!! An equally important and certainly a newsworthy issue was the passing on the 20 August by both the House and the Senate of the package of three Bills that will establish a new ADF superannuation scheme for members joining after 1 July A little more of that in the following paragraphs but the new scheme the Australian Defence Force Superannuation Scheme (or ADF Super) - will replace the existing Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS). And then there is the perpetually centre stage issue involving the plight of our disabled veterans. They continue to be disadvantaged by way of the economic loss Special Rate/Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (SR/TPIs) veterans have suffered, all as a result of the complete inadequacy of the compensation that has been provided to them over time. More on all that and several other issues in the following paragraphs as well. Plus an important announcement that two companies, namely the Bradford Exchange and the Storage King Group, have agreed, by way of very welcome sponsorships, to support the proud work we do to foster the best interests and welfare of all members of the Australian Defence Force and their families, in any matter likely to affect each and every one of them, during or after their period of service. A big thanks to both companies for generously supporting the veterans community. NEW ADF SUPER SCHEME Perhaps to take the hottest and most recent issue first, namely the new accumulation ADF Super Scheme. Because of the many good questions (large and small) that we have fielded about it, a brief summary of the Scheme is offered below. But first, high credit is due to the Government and the responsible Minister for having listened to the concerns DFWA and its ADSO partners had about the proposed Bill s original draft. That draft gave little if any recognition to the unique nature of military service, and proposed an unworkable differential higher contribution rate (18%) to those involved in operational deployments vis those not on deployment, the latter invariably subject to very similar risks and work loads inherent in training for operational service. Notably, all sides of politics supported the new Scheme, including the 22
The Australian Defence Force Superannuation Bill 2015 Having passed effortlessly through the House and the Senate, the now legislated ADF Super Scheme will be an accumulation one commencing on 1 July As of that date, the current MSBS will be closed to new members. Right from the start it was designed to involve full contribution by the government and none by the member if he/she so wished. Originally, the Government proposed that they would contribute 15.4%, and raise it to 18% for those on war like service. After considerable lobbying, the final Bill provides for a single 16.4% Government contribution rate for all ADF personnel, regardless of their operational status. This rate is one percent higher than Government contributes to its civilian public sector superannuation schemes and now does not discriminate between operational and non-operational service. The higher rate was won on the argument that there had to be recognition of the unique nature of military service. Significantly, the 16.4% will be based on all ordinary time earnings, which includes salary and all allowances that are not expense type allowances**. The new ADF Super Scheme will apply to: Those joining the ADF for the first time on and after 1 July 2016;. Contributing MSBS members who choose to join ADF Super; Preserved MSBS members who re-join the ADF and choose to become a member of ADF Super; MSBS and Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) scheme members who receive retirement pay and re-join the ADF on a full time basis or as a Reservist on Continuous Full Time Service on or after 1 July Contributing DFRDB members do not have the option to transfer to ADF Super. Unlike previous military schemes, such as the Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) that requires a minimum employee contribution of 5% of salary, there will be no requirement for ADF Super members to make employee contributions to their superannuation. As a result, contributing MSBS members who choose to become ADF Super members will immediately receive a 5% increase to their take home pay since they are no longer required to make compulsory employee contributions. ADF Cover, the death and disability component of ADF Super, will provide at least the same cover as currently exists in the extant MSBS. TPI Federation Campaign for Redress DISABLED VETERANS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE The TPI Federation, together with its ADSO partners, is underway with a campaign for fair economic loss compensation to be given to the most disabled Veterans in our community, namely the Special Rate/Totally & Permanently Incapacitated (SR/TPI)) members. What is required is adjusting their 23
their ongoing decline in their standard of living let alone adequately support their families in the process. In effect, what is sought is that those disabled Veterans be allowed to live in dignity and with selfesteem by having the SR/TPI Compensation increased to 100% of the average weekly wage. It is currently at a lowly 43%. This has diminished over the past 65 years from 80% to 43%. Can this continue to be tolerated? Arguably not at all!! For that reason, the TPI Federation with ADSO support initiated a campaign on 17 August 2015 seeking public and defence community support. Part of the campaign includes a public petition Fair Compensation for our Most Disabled Diggers and releasing an explanatory awareness SR/TPI video. Readers are cordially asked to access both links and support the cause for redress for our most disabled veteran colleagues. The lack of redress explains a number of inalienable facts: The number of Veterans who are homeless; The number of Veterans' whose spouses/partners must work to bring in a sustainable income: The number of Veterans who cannot afford the ever increasing cost of living; The number of Veteran and civilian organisations asked to provide the very services that are the responsibility of Government; The number of Veterans who cannot hold their heads high with the knowledge that they have done their country proud and that the Government will look after them; An Outstanding Grievance In all the forgoing what should not be forgotten is the outstanding grievance that the families of the disabled would benefit from a grant to them of the same structural increase as other pensions received in This would restore parity with other pensions, and replace the $3,300 pa taken from them by the then ALP Government and not restored since. VETERAN'S AFFAIRS LEGISLATION AMENDMENT BILL 2015 Many readers will be aware that earlier this month the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee looked at the legislative changes to implement the single path appeals process inviting submissions to that inquiry. The National leadership group making up the Round Table of the Defence and Ex-Service member Organisations issued a press statement expressing their deep concern that the passage of the Veterans Affairs Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 had been delayed in the Senate. DFWA along with some other ESOs, made written submissions to the inquiry, most of which generally supported the intention to introduce the single pathway. However, as we continued our detailed examination of the legislation itself, we found what we perceived a serious flaw in it. That flaw would have the effect of prohibiting the ability of the AAT to make a finding to award costs to a 24
As we considered the flaw insurmountably contentious, we made an urgent supplementary submission to the Committee calling for a change to remove this prohibition. The Committee accepted it an important input which will form an element of its findings and in its final report. More will undoubtedly follow in the coming month or so. 26 Dogs grant veterans wishes Whiskey s Wish founders Dylan Jeffries and Scott Jackman with canine mate Roxy. The memory of his late canine mate is driving an Eatons Hill man to help former soldiers struggling with the aftermath of war. After sustaining debilitating back and neck injuries during military deployment to Afghanistan, Scott Jackman was dis-charged from the Australian Army in The next year he was drinking heavily and diagnosed with major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was at his lowest following the death of his assistance dog, Whiskey last year. I didn t realise how much of a bond I had with him until he died, and how much he held my life (together), he said. I didn t want to live anymore. I was suicidal. Now with his friend and army colleague Dylan Jeffries he is helping fellow veterans find solace through a canine mate. Last November they founded the charity Whiskey s Wish, using special service dogs to help veterans with PTSD reintegrate back into society but feel safe at the same time. A lot of blokes will come back from war and they re suffering and they ll have their pet dog but they can t take them out in public, Mr Jackman said. What we do is teach them (the dogs) obedience. They give company plus it makes them (returned military personnel) feel more safe and protected. Scott Jackman and Roxy pay a visit to State Member for Ferny Grove and Whiskey s Wish supporter, Mark Furner. The best part of the dog we don t actually train, it s all instinctual, like when they wake the bloke up when he has a nightmare or jumps up on his lap when he s feeling depressed. Mr Jeffries, from Ferny Hills, said his work with Whiskey s Wish had turned my life around 100 per cent. Because I injured my back before I had to deploy (with the army) I had to watch all my mates go overseas and do the job we were so passionate about doing, he said. I would wake up every day and go to bed every day thinking I was worthless. Forming Whiskey s Wish gave me a new perspective: if I can t help my mates overseas I can definitely help them when they get home, when they re probably going to need help the most. A self-funded organisation, Whiskey s Wish aimed to train one service dog in its first year but has 12 dogs on its books. It s very rewarding to be able to help someone and to just see the happiness come back to their face, it s unbelievable, Mr Jackman said. One of Whiskey s Wish s biggest supporters is State Member for Ferny Grove and former Senator for Queensland, Mark Furner. After leading an inquiry into the care of wounded and injured defence personnel, Mr Furner heard from veterans and their family members about the debilitating effects of PTSD. Researchers have found that bonding with dogs has improved oxycontin levels in the brain helping PTSD sufferers overcome feelings of paranoia and enabling them to reintegrate into society, Mr Furner said. This is why I commend the work of Whiskey s Wish and their mission to help our veterans. Give your support at whiskeyswish.org.au and like Whiskey s Wish on Facebook. 26

10 Military Habits That Make Service Members Stand Out 10 signs you were or are clearly in the military. 10 Military Habits We all know the tell-tale signs of a military service member: high-and-tight haircut, camo backpack, polo shirt and cargo shorts combination, unit t-shirts or hats, decals on cars, and of course, Affliction t-shirts. These are all easy ways to spot military folks in public places. And while many of us try not to stand out, there are still subtle indicators. Most civilians would never notice these things, but they are dead giveaways to those who have served. Here are the top ten. 1. Walking fast. You might be doing a great job of blending in to your civilian surroundings, but your walk is always going to give you away. Military personnel walk with a purpose, as if their trip to the grocery store is actually a Pentagon press briefing. 2. Hair. Br oke your habit of getting a high and tight? Good for you. But that leaves you two options: the fade and the classic officer or pilot hair. Yes, we see you pushing the edges of the three inches on the top rule as proscribed in Army Regulation Eating fast. Habits are har d to kick. And rarely in the military did you ever have ample time to appreciate your food even if you wanted to. 4. The power stance. Non-commissioned officers and officers are easy to spot: Just look for the person attempting to own the room through the thumbs through the belt power stance or the crossed arms and not leaning against anything stance. 5. Jargon. Just try not to say roger or negative in conversations. Just try. Eventually, your language will out you. 6. Walking. There is no way that a group of military members can take a casual stroll down a sidewalk without eventually falling into step. Even if you try not to, you will. 7. Sunglasses. Congratulations, you re not wearing Oakley s or G.I. frames. Well done. But you re still wearing sunglasses all the time. Even when it is cloudy out. 8. Absurd politeness. You can easily pick out service members by their over usage of sir and ma am. It is a credit to the military s discipline that a cashier receives the same clipped tones and politeness a four-star general would. 9. Scanning crowds. Go to a party and you re bound to see the one person who is constantly scanning usually somewhere where they can see the whole room. And God help the person acting suspicious because the military promotes being confrontational. 10. Sleeping anywhere. Military personnel can sleep appr oximately anywhere, in any weather, on anything. They also come out of it rapidly and coherently, which paid dividends for the people aboard the Paris-bound train with the gunman aboard who was overpowered by two U.S. service members. 32
Steps to help with your DVA claims Here is a few steps to help with your DVA claims Get a treating specialist - Psych, Ortho's etc. 2. Get a diagnosis before putting in your claim. 3. Ensure your injury / Illness meets the relevant SOP if you are MRCA / VEA. 4. Know which legislation you are covered by MRCA / SRCA / VEA (best to check with an Advocate not DVA). 5. Ensure you get a copy of your Medical records - copy them during your discharge process or FOI them before you lodge your first DVA claim. 6. Do not assume anything - work on facts. 7. If your illness / injury is preventing you from working get a medical certificate and request incapacity payments from DVA if you are under SRCA / MRCA but the injury / illness must be accepted by DVA. 8. If have a psych or cancer illness DVA can provide non-liability health care again see your advocate for the forms don't trust DVA to know you are struggling. 9. Remember that anything you claim must be able to be linked to service under the relevant act. If you are under more than one act (rule of thumb if you joined before July 2004) you are probably covered under at least 2 acts. 10. If you are suffering financial hardship don't depend on DVA to quickly resolve your claim that rarely happens. Talk to the bank finance company and reach out for assistance most ESO's (RSL, AP- PVA, and others like the Australian Defence Force Assistance Trust) have funds available to assist you this is our duty to you the money is there you just have to ask. In saying that in most cases you will need to provide the outstanding bills etc. you will not just be given cash. 11. It is you claim, your life, your future be proactive and do your research, keep informed, know what is happening, keep copies of your dealings with DVA, ESO's, Advocates and any one else who is involved (centrelink, comsuper etc.). If things go pear shaped a paper trail is very important, ask for everything in writing or . EDD inaugural annual Certification exercise
RAAF completes C-17 fleet RAAF officially welcomed its newest aircraft into service at Amberley today, completing its fleet of C-17s. 34 On 2 November, the eighth C-17A Globemaster III A transport aircraft for the Royal Australian Air Force touched down at its home of RAAF Base Amberley, completing its delivery flight from the United States ahead of today s formal ceremony. Comprehensive range of Air Force gifts, clothing and memorabilia available at MILITARY SHOP The acquisition of two additional Boeing C-17A Globemaster III aircraft and associated equipment and facilities was a $1 billion extra investment in Australia s ability to provide vital heavy airlift to a range of global military operations. Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies said the Royal Australian Air Force was part of the global fleet of C-17A Globemasters, including the global sustainment system that delivered improved interoperability with our coalition partners. The C-17A Globemaster is an incredibly versatile aircraft. It allows us to provide an air bridge from Australia with supplies to the men and women deployed around the world, support Army operations, and assist at home with disaster relief such as the Queensland floods, Air Marshal Davies said. Additional aircraft mean we can better meet the demands of moving personnel and equipment within the short timeframes required in emergency situations, such as floods and cyclones. Minister for Defence Materiel and Science Mal Brough said that with extraordinary lift and range, the C-17A Globemaster was an integral part of the Australian Defence Force s airlift capability. It allows Australia to rapidly deploy troops, combat equipment, tanks, helicopters and humanitarian resources worldwide, Mr Brough said. The C-17A Globemaster has played a central role in the ADF s activities, including supporting the international effort to combat Daesh in Iraq and Syria, recovering the victims of the MH-17 tragedy in the Ukraine, and delivering disaster relief to victims of the Vanuatu cyclone and Queensland floods. Australia has worked closely with the United States Air Force to acquire the additional operating capability within a short timeframe. Australia s fleet of C-17As now stands at eight.

Sent in by Graham Purser T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE, MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY, WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO, IN THIS HOME, DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES, OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT, CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR, IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED, A TRUE AUSSIE SOLDIER. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM, EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER, HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE, IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT, A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES, AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED, AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED, FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE, ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR, SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." 38 WAS THIS THE HERO, OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALISED THE FAMILIES, THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS, WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE, A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." This poem was written by a Peacekeeping soldier stationed overseas. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favour of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to all of the service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.
