As they have already had experience of working as a larger team, the chance to work mainly as a pair might suit some students and give them an opportunity to focus on an area of work where they feel confident for instance those more comfortable with Numeracy might be allocated the finance task. Clearly, the whole group would need to negotiate and agree the pairings and outcomes for each task. Name: Max Story: Max's owners had to move to a flat so they could no longer keep him. A sheet of wild cards has been provided to offer additional challenges to all or selected groups; you can choose to introduce them into any of the tasks during session 4. They are analogous to the kind of changes that all projects may face during their development. Students may be handed a random wild card which will require them to reconsider their initial planning and adjust it to accommodate the changes. This unexpected change provides an additional challenge and helps students realise that their choices and decisions are always based on imperfect knowledge of the whole situation and thus will invariably require flexibility and fast thinking! See page 3 for possible extension activities.

2 38 Teachers Notes Session 4 Wild cards 1. WILD CARD A trust has announced that it will award an additional 200,000 to help with construction costs for the first year (not running costs). The money must be used within one year. 2. WILD CARD The Lottery has awarded you a oneoff grant of 50,000 which you can use for an education project. 3. WILD CARD Super Supermarkets have agreed to match every 1 you spend on food and medicines for dogs. They will give you an extra 1 for every 1 you spend with them. 4. WILD CARD Scrummy dog and cat food suppliers will provide free pet food for one year if they can say you endorse all Scrummy products (including shampoos, medicines, chocolate treats etc.). 5. WILD CARD Local cutbacks in council spending in your area mean that the existing dog warden schemes will be closed. You have been warned that you can expect 50% more rescued/lost animals than anticipated in the coming years. 6. WILD CARD Unfounded newspaper rumours of expensive new dog licences for dangerous breeds mean lots more Staffordshire Bull Terriers are found straying.

3 39 Teachers Notes Session 4 Wild cards 7. WILD CARD CheapoChem will offer 10 years worth of dog medicines from an undisclosed source. They say the medicines are as good as the real thing. They would like to know how your animals respond to their treatments to aid research. 10. WILD CARD A break-in at your vehicle depot means that half of your animal ambulances will be out of action for two months owing to vandalism. 8. WILD CARD A severe and prolonged outbreak of cat flu in many catteries has led the Veterinary Society to suggest that more stringent hygiene standards must be maintained. 11. WILD CARD It seems that Vets and Animal Welfare Assistants working weekends are entitled to 25% more pay than you had initially thought. 9. WILD CARD Another animal shelter has set up nearby and now it seems you can only get 25% of the volunteers that were originally promised. 12. WILD CARD An outrageous TV series called I m a victimised dog owner get me out of here! has affected public opinion and rehoming rates have fallen by 60%.

They need to consider all of the factors that make for the smooth running of the centre, such as staffing and rotas as well as all aspects of animal care. Students should develop their plans by placing sticky notes or cards onto their own project planning calendar, or using the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home calendar template for guidance. They have to be prepared to share their thinking with the rest of their group and explain their plans as part of a whole group presentation (using PowerPoint if available). Students can use either the completed calendar within the supporting presentation or the calendar template version shown as follows. They are required to set out the costs that might be incurred by running a new BDCH centre over a year. 2. The aim is to ensure that the costs do not exceed income, but also to make them aware that charitable institutions like BDCH cannot run at a loss for long or expect to be subsidised. 3. The spreadsheet format provided may be filled in by the pairs/group with the aid of calculators. 7 43 Task 2 Finance Instructions This task can be done on paper or electronically. You need: Budget sheet to fill in and calculators Costs sheet with suggested costs. Whilst it is important to decide how the new BDCH will be run, it is vital to ensure that what is planned is realistic and can be carried out in practice. That means making sure that everything can be paid for and will continue to be affordable in the years to come. 1.Use the Budget sheet to enter the financial data from the Costs sheet. Enter the income source names in the left hand side column beneath Income and the actual sums under the right hand side column title Total Income. 2.Calculate the totals. 3.Repeat the process for the expenditure items.

Using their knowledge of their local area, they should suggest a location where the following criteria could be met: on fairly flat land easy to get to by car and public transport, so quite close to major roads and possibly rail links a place where there are likely to be enough people to fill the many different jobs that must be advertised in an area that is likely to have suitable homes for our dogs/cats away from quiet residential areas and dangerous/polluted/noisy industrial areas close to appropriate exercise areas and parks in a geographically sound location e.g. not in a high flood risk area. 3. You may wish to supply students with a copy of the UK map (page 49) showing where other BDCH sites are located, or a local map so students can indicate their chosen location for their new centre. ii) Design 1. Provide students with the example of a floor plan, showing how a site is laid out. 2. Explain how the site designers work within the allocated area to produce the optimum layout. 3. Students should think about why some areas are next to or far away from each other and why this might be, before using the blank floor plan template to map out how their new centre would be organised. Use the following colours to show where you are planning to put the various facilities.
