CRUFTS 2016 Of course I must start with a huge thank you for the invitation to judge my Breed, it was a great honour to do this and felt like such a natural passage after winning the prestigious award of Best of Breed at Crufts with my boy last year. A big thank you to my stewards who were marvellous! So efficient and generous with their support, even when we were all under pressure to hurry it along. With a super entry of 134 dogs and with so few absentees and quite a few overseas exhibitors as well, it was a big day for everyone, especially the dogs. I feel, as a breed, we have so very much to be proud of, all teeth were clean, nails short, only one or two light eyes and nearly all mouths were good. Our bichons are very healthy and certainly fit for purpose, and I am sure we will keep it that way. As a breed we should also be so proud that such a generosity was shown to all the winners, with such resounding applause around the ring. The good grace, demonstrated by everyone, will continue to attract, new people into our fabulous breed. There were many new faces! It wouldn t be me if I didn t have a few words to say about coat!... Most coats are of the right type, thick, plush, soft, white with a soft corkscrew curl hanging loosely, especially when the dogs first come out of their trollies So many exhibitors used to really over sculpt the outline of their dogs. Length would be often taken off the top line to enhance the neck sometimes down to half an inch long and the chest and rump would be scalped to create the illusion of a shorter dog. Some even still shave the underbelly to give the appearance of more leg. However, I am delighted that more coat is being left on most dogs these days and I really do prefer this. The coat should be a major feature of the Bichon and of course I know and appreciate that as a breed, we attract a lot of professional groomers who love to demonstrate their skills. However, these skills are really best used to enhance the coat through natural coat maintenance carried out throughout the year and trim sympathetically only to the Natural contours of the dog underneath. There was a time when evidence of corkscrew coat was so important, the dogs were sprayed with a fine mist of water before they went into the ring, our breed has this feature in it s name, let s not lose sight of what is important. Tear staining has been a bit of a problem for some this year and a few of those were penalised for this, not just because they had dark tearstains but because their faces had been shaved to the skin in an effort to disguise it and the skin left wet and greasy. I mention this only because the cure was so much worse than the initial problem. Shaved faces look hard and stern, without hair between the eyes, the eye set can appear much closer and the length of muzzle is exaggerated. Before you say the equilateral triangle would still be evident, so often it was, but on dogs that were perhaps a tad long in muzzle to start with and also with a slightly narrower skull, the whole effect becomes a disaster area. Type will never become uniform in Bichons and over recent years I have come to embrace and appreciate the different types. They all fit the standard well enough but the difference in size and the wide range this offers in regard to proportion and balance will result in top honours going to sometimes two quite different types of Bichon. My dog CC, demonstrated a very lively and outgoing personality, quite rangy and up to the limit in size but a very handsome headed boy with a huge coat which was perfectly presented. My bitch CC on the other hand was almost to the other end of the scale in size with an exquisite head, perfectly proportioned and so beautifully balanced, who glided around the ring as if she new before I did that it was going to be her day. How could I not love them both, as different as they were? Veteran Dog abs 1st.: P.Helmenen s Int/Fin/Se/Dk/NI/Be/Ch. Charmandelan Master Of Arts POHJCH I m not surprised to see all these titles on this fabulous little dog at 9 years old he had the coat, condition and pigment of a 3 yr. old. Beautifully put together, good dentition, lovely dark eye and excellent pigment, and would not looked out of place in open. His owner must have been so proud of him when he moved around the ring, so sound and with such a great attitude!

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW WINDSOR 2016 I would like to thank the committee and my stewards for making this such a well run and fun show to judge. As a founder member of the club I felt very honoured to judge this show. I want to thank the exhibitors for their dedication, sportsmanship and for preparing their dogs so well. Overall I found the breed in really good shape; heads, mouths, tails and soundness were good and all had black pads MINOR PUPPY DOG. (1:1) 1st. Smith s Sourensen Christmas Magic. Six month old youngster with a good head, dark eye and pigment, good bite, well-proportioned body, but would like more angulation front and rear. PUPPY DOG. (1:1) 1st. Stanley & Weaving s Elancie Blaze Of Glory. Stylish 9 month old with correct bite, good size eye, dark pigment and a very sweet expression. Good shape body but needs more angulation fore and aft. Moved with plenty of verve. JUNIOR DOG. (2:2) 1st Piercy s Arjanan Colour My World. Very pretty headed youngster of super type. Good mouth, eye and pigment, balanced body, straight front, good neck and shoulders, soft coat, very good mover. At this adolescent stage he needs his handler to take more charge. 2nd. Roger s Alizo Betting It On Black. Has a lovely head with good eye and pigment throughout. Good angles, tad long in the body. Moves true coming and going, excellent coat, very well groomed. POST GRADUATE DOG. (3:3) 1ST. Parkinson s Chazbam The Devil Wears Prada. Very stylish dog, of lovely shape and cheeky expression. Good head proportion, nice size eye, excellent pigment throughout. Well angulated front and rear. Moved out with class in soft white coat beautifully presented. 2nd. Roger s Alizo Trump To Win. Handsome dog, well balanced body with good angles. Dark pigment, super coat very well groomed. Moved out well and true both ways. 3rd. Smith & Mill s Litinaz Precious Cristal. LIMIT DOG (8:6) 1st. Gallagher s Junanger s Jimmi Choo. Quality dog, so well made, balanced throughout. Handsome head with dark eye and pigment. Good neck into well laid shoulders and good return. Ideal size, moves out well, keeping his topline and tail carriage, balanced profile movement. Well groomed, would like more head coat. TRAINING YOUR BICHON FRISE Bichons are an easy breed to train, many compete in obedience, agility, Rally-O and many have completed their Good Citizen Award right up to Gold level. There is no easy way to train your dog, it takes time and patience. The trick of training a Bichon successfully is to keep it fun, keep sessions short and always reward their best effort. If you are having difficulty, stop working on that particular exercise and ask your dog to do something it knows very well so that you can give a reward, then end the session. Bichons are really good at letting you know things aren t going too well, they simply walk away! I ve listed below a few tips to help you train your bichon. Walk without pulling, this is one thing that owners find so difficult, but it is quite easy to fix. Ideally right from the start you should teach your puppy never to walk in front of you, puppies naturally follow, so you can praise and reward them without making it necessary to train. To stop a dog from pulling, you need to take your time, stay calm and stay silent. As soon as your dog goes ahead of you, quietly turn around without tugging the lead, and go in the opposite direction, when your dog catches up with you, turn around again and carry on walking in the original direction, keep doing this until your dog walks next to you, then praise your dog and keep talking to it to encourage your dog to stay with you. You may find it will take several repetitions before your dog understands what is required. Stay in one place, this is one of the most difficult things to teach a bichon. They are naturally inquisitive and get bored easily. Their need to be your companion and to go wherever you go, makes staying in one place while you walk away really difficult for them. At this stage we are teaching them to stay so it doesn t matter if they sit, stand or lie down. Stand next to your dog ask them to stay, count to 10 and reward, repeat this three times then end the session. Next time start with a count of ten, if they stay still for the ten, reward them, then ask them to stay for 15, always repeat three times then end the session. Gradually work up to your dog staying still for 1 minute, when your dog is really steady for one minute, then you can take a step away, return immediately and praise your dog, then step away again, repeat three times, reward your dog and end the session. If your dog moves from the spot, go back, don t speak to your dog, just settle them and stay with your dog. Spend few more sessions staying next to them before moving again. It is important that you don t rush your dog. If your dog repeatedly breaks the stay you need to keep the sessions really short, so that you can reward the dog before they move. Sue Hardy Memb. 10 FROM THE TREASURER.. With the turn of October it starts a new club year. Subs are due October 1st and we will be verifying those who have paid and contacting those who have not by the end of October. Las years accounts are being finalised and ready for audit. The club is looking healthy financially with us making a small profit again this year. A full summary will be available at the AGM. Thanks, NOTICE OF AGM Karen The Annual General Meeting of the Southern Bichon Frise Breeders Association will take place on Sunday 12th February 2017 at The Oasis Leisure Centre, North Star Avenue, Swindon, SN2 1EP, After the completion of judging (not before 12 midday). Items for the agenda or nominations for the committee, should be sent the Honorary Secretary, Mrs Sue Hardy, Winharleigh, Armscote Road, Tredington, Warwickshire, CV36 4NP, in writing at least 28 days before the date of the AGM. Sue Hardy Hon. Secretary 2nd: Killick s Yakee Credit Crunch. 8yrs old. A real favourite of mine who has been shown regularly since a puppy and who is still in lovely condition and so beautifully presented today. Good coat and great pigment expertly handled. It s good to see him still enjoying himself. 3rd: Walton s Marinik Rocket Man at Keunevek 9yrs old and still has a great coat, nicely balanced, throughout, so sound and steady on the move, such a credit to his owner as it s no mean feat keeping this level of condition on a veteran Bichon. Well done! Puppy Dog 5:0 1st: Brisley s Almasi Bonnie Prince Charlie. Loved his head! Good scissor bite, a little naughty on the move but I could see enough. Quite mature for ten months, just needs to settle and his owner gain a little confidence and he could do well. 2nd: Makinson s Sherrosea All Shook Up Very close up to one oin overall quality, but needs to body up a bit. However he is still very young. Great front. Steady, mover. 3rd: Larkins Sherrosea Love Me Tender A little narrower throughout than 1 & 2 but in a few months all can change at this age. Over all a very nice prospect, has all the essentials but just needs time. Junior Dog 6:0 1st: Parkinsons Chazbam Devil Wears Prada He has a perfectly balanced head, lovely sized dark eye, excellent pigment and perfect condition. His construction is spot on, reflecting in effortless free flowing movement. Well plumed tail carried gently over the back. Lovely soft coat, not exaggerated in any way but although confident and outgoing, he can be a handful for his owner who does struggle with his wilful temperament at times. Today he posed me with a massive problem as he really impressed me when he went around the ring in the challenge. Clearly he is nearly ready and I was sorely tempted! 2nd: Galagher s Junangers Jimmi Choo. Another beautiful dog I wish was mine. Has one of the best heads of the day with clean features, lovely sized dark eye, beautiful pigment, and a sweet expression. Well presented and moves soundly, just preferred the exuberance of the winner who had just a bit more sparkle today. 3rd: Conelly s Ashmair Celtic Charm. Won his place on his overall construction and super outgoing attitude on the move. However there is far too much dog for me and sadly his tear staining was quite a distraction. Yearling Dog 8:0 1st: Erb s Let It Be Des Portes De Hanau This boy certainly has the wow factor with same fabulous attitude as his sire, no wonder I was drawn to him. He has a pretty head with well-defined triangle. He is beautifully made throughout, sound coming and going, with a lovely soft coat. He has complete dentition, dark eye, and proud head carriage with good neck set into well laid shoulders, all held so beautifully together on the move. Pushed really hard for the CC and I was very happy to award him the reserve CC.

CRUFTS 2016 Cont. 2nd: John s Hooray Henry Lovely boy have admired greatly since a puppy. Completely different type to one, especially in head properties and best described as handsome with the most intense black pigment I was to see all day, with a large dark eye and correct dentition. Mature in body and well muscled, he is nicely presented throughout with steady profile movement and good head carriage, expertly handled. 3rd: Walklate s Ashoka Taylor Made JW. Another great little mover, difficult to take your eyes off him on the go around. He has all the qualities to go far. Lovely head, well proportioned little body, good front and rear movement and hardly put a foot wrong today. Was unlucky to be in such a strong class where the first two are mature already. He has hit a difficult age when the coat, especially his furnishings, need just a little bit more time; when it does he will trouble the best. He already has everything else he needs. The things Bichons do.. Post Grad 15:1 1st: Smith s Alizo Planet Hollywood. Such a smart little dog very much the size I prefer. I have to admit I really didn t rate the heads on this boy as a youngster, but it goes to show some lines can take a little time to broaden up and mature and this dog s head has matured well. It has a great depth of skull, equal triangle, good sized dark eye and well defined halos. Well constructed body, lovely moving coming and going and really quite difficult to fault. Beautifully presented coat prepared by someone who knows when to put his scissors away! 2nd: Rogers Alizo Trump To Win. Very similar to one who was also bred by this owner, and very much the same applies throughout, although on a slightly larger frame. Another lovely head and so very well presented and handled. 3rd: Inglis Effaldees Blowing In The Wind. So very different to 1 & 2, much smaller, more compact, more refined and a little leggier. Has more delicate features and a pretty head with lovely head carriage. Moved around the ring with loads of attitude and didn t put a foot wrong. Very smart. Limit Dog 10:0 1st: Smith s Alizo Sahara Have always liked this dog, slightly more attractive shape than his kennel mate who is just as well constructed. Moves really well, has a really good coat, so soft and plush, everything is just so. I do prefer the head on this boy, he has just slightly more refined features and better pigment today. Moved soundly. His day will come I m sure. With thanks to Jodi Bromilow and her bichons. If you have some action shots of your bichons we love to show them here!

Limit Bitch 7:5 What a class! Five beautifully mature bitches, all from the very toip drawer and capable of winning CC s. 1st: Pugh s Quissmar Lightening Mix. I had to go with my heart with this one. A most beautiful head on super conformation and so nicely balanced throughout. The head description I gave to my RCC winner applies to this girl too, they just don t come any better than this. This bitch had the added attraction of being just a little more refined in body without losing any depth of chest and yet having enough muscle to move so freely and soundly. I just loved everything about her and she let nobody down today. I hope she doesn t have to wait too long for her third CC. 2nd: Byrnes Eithlynn Lil Miss Sunshine Another lovely head, on a beautifully presented bitch. Well made, moves very well, lovely pigment, and has all the essentials. Fought really hard for her place in this company. 3rd: Davidsons Marinik Diamante. Another type, but another quality bitch. More elegant and slightly higher on leg and presents quite a picture lead round the ring on a loose lead. She presents a lovely outline especially on the move. Open Bitch 12:2 1st: Mault s Ch. Limartine Nice To See You. Lovely champion bitch in full bloom. Super head, good eye and pigment. Not a small bitch by any means but does not have any trace of coarseness and is as sound as a bell. In profile she has any easy action and parallel movement coming and going. In full coat which was super dense, pure white and beautifully presented. Topped this very varied class on her overall performance, which unfortunately did not extend to the challenge where she lost a bit of confidence. 2nd: Corish & Coad s Hydepark JP Smiling Face. Much smaller, pretty little bitch, more compact than one and who was so nice to go over over on the table. Good mouth, very nice head proportions and lovely white coat. She moved out with plenty of attitude at first but seemed uneasy and unsettled at times. Not quite as confident as usual. 3rd: Anderson s Ch. Brokengate Keepsake. Lovely bitch, good size, very sound throughout and moved out really well. She has a good coat which was so nicely presented and put up a good performance to win her place over some strong competition. Good Citizen 1:0 1st: Bruce s Amiesta Sno Angel. Stood alone but a sweet, well trained pretty girl who was so full of character. 2nd: Barber s Chazbam Bang Tidy. Great little dog, who has been a favourite of mine for a long time now. In spite of his size he can fill the eye like an 11 inch dog, so full of attitude and so sound coming and going. His front and rear extension is great on the go around. He has very attractive head, good pigment, lovely eye and good dentition. He has a beautifully plumed tail which never moves from his back. Very close up to one in this class, but unfortunately not wearing quite such a full coat. 3rd: Davidson s Marinik Cartier For Me Lovely boy. Perfect size, loved his overall shape and construction, he moves out so well on a loose lead and stands four square. A very glamourous dog, his coat is not over trimmed in any way and yet expertly and sympathetically shaped into a very attractive overall picture. Very attractive head, good dentition, nice sized dark eye and pigment. Such a shame the tear staining spoilt overall appearance. Open Dog 11:3 1st: Stafford s Ch. Louisianna Troublemaker. CC & BOB This boy ticked all the boxes for me today. He excels in coat quality, confirmation and he moves so well in profile and going up and down. I love his outline and proud head carriage which he maintains with a level top-line on the move. He has a lovely dark eye, good pigment, good mouth and a most attractive head and expression. He fought hard for his class and received his reward. Dog CC & BOB. 2nd: Erb s Ch. I want It All Des Portes De Hanau Liked this boy a lot, I really find the type very appealing, slightly finer, great attitude on the move, good coat and matched one in many ways. Sound as a bell throughout but not quite the plushness of coat nor the expression of one, but a lovely champion never the less. 3rd: Bradley s Ch. Avenir Above And Beyond Perfectly sized dog that has good overall conformation, and is well proportioned throughout. Quite difficult to fault and certainly a worthy champion, but a little more angulation would improve the reach and drive. Handled and presented expertly and beautifully. Has an attractive head, good pigment, correct dentition. Moves steadily coming and going. Good Citizen Dog 4:1 1st: Woodhouse s Avenir Breaking News Very nice dog that did well to be placed in earlier classes. Lovely overall shape, really good head and nicely presented. 2nd: Walton s Marinik Rocket Man At Keunevek 3rd: Marsden s Eithlynn Will O The Wisp. A lovely veteran dog who is such a credit to his owner. Chris Wyatt.

CRUFTS CONT... BITCHES Veteran Bitch 9:1 1st: Venables Beausox Miss Potter. If ever a bitch had deserved her title this is her. She was so unlucky to not get that third CC and her overall quality is still evident today at 9yrs. Old. Such a lovely type with a really lovely head, so well balanced and still is such bloom, with an excellent coat and full dentition. She moved out so very well, it is good to see her enjoying the limelight. 2nd: Andersons Portrena Wish You Love At Brokengate 8 yrs.old and in such good form. Moved around the ring in such good style and with super reach and drive that is not seen on so many of the younger ones. Lovely condition, and well constructed. Full dentition and very attractive head. 3rd: Rogers Atroya Viva Las Vegas. Minor Puppy Bitch 2:0 1st: Mold s Deloto Brings Joy To The Moon. 2nd: Bruce s Amiesta Spin Me Around. Two very raw babies that handled a very big day out really well considering they were barely 8 months old. Both have all the essentials there, pretty heads, good mouths, baby jackets and legs that are a little unsure as to which direction they are going but early days yet. Puppy Bitch 5:0 1st: Beater s Starforth Miss Chievous Liked her overall confirmation, but still quite small at the minute. In her mind she is huge and so full of herself and a great little mover. Pretty head, lovely big dark eye and super pigment. Her coat was really good for her age and plenty of it! BP. 2nd: Smith s Kizmalor Stars In Their Eyes. Much leggier than one but still well balanced. She looks like she might be a very elegant adult and has the prettiest head.she moved out with reach and drive. 3rd: Osborne s Magstarai Heart Of The Ocean Taller and more substantial than 1 & 2 so may take a little more time. Still insure what to do with her legs at the moment but has a good coat and is nicely balanced throughout. A good prospect. Junior Bitch 12:1 1st: Macleod & Oak s Languilla Clare De Luna RCC I adore this girls head: it is near perfection for me. The eye size in complete balance with the button nose, the triangle absolutely equal, just enough stop, eyes round, forward facing and dark. Good mouth with correct jawline and with strong black pigment. Not a trace of staining. Conformation is really good with more than enough neck, well balanced and sound moving. Super ice white coat, good tail set and carriage. Not a faultless performance she can be a little unpredictable but today did more than enough to be awarded the RCC. 2nd: Male s Marinik Saucy Minx with Maleblanc This little girl is a star in the making, I love her, she is sound coming and going, she, moves round the ring with attitude, reach and drive. She has lovely conformation and an elegance that so few bitches possess. I have had my eye on her for some time and have wondered what I might do if these two met. They are quite different but both are top quality. My earlier comments about rtear staining u fortunately applied here and I really hope her owner can get on topof the problem. So today, shge had to settle for a very respectable second place to the CC winner, but her day will come soon, I am sure. 3rd: Erb s L Affaire Est Dans Le Sac Des Portes De Hanau Small, refined, loved her shape and very pretty head that moves out well, really well, just needs more time. Yearling Bitch 13:1 1st: Doran s Alizo Desert Rose Beautifully balanced, gorgeous thick and soft coat with a very attractive head with lovely sized dark eye giving a lovely soft expression. Nose pigment could be a little darker but the dense halos more than made up for this. Very sound mover. 2nd: Russell s Rusmar Kool Kisses This little girl is improving all the time, she s a different type to one, although smaller in stature, she has more leg and is very outgoing on the move. Very pretty head with a good sized, forward facing dark eye. Extremely eye catching in profile. She deserves her place in the top two of the largest class of the day. 3rd: Marquiss Minibelle Top Dog Pretty In White At Quissmar (Imp) Smaller more refined, a little more leg than most, but still nicely balanced and well constructed. Has a lovely neck and head carriage which she holds well on the move. Has a good coat and a pretty head with good pigment. She was tending to pull to one side today on the up and down. Post Graduate Bitch 12:1 1st: Erb s Tes Fesses Des Portes De Hanau Very impressed with this bitch and I love pretty much everything about her there is a great type coming from this kennel. There have been little differences between them so I was taken more by this girl because she had a lovely pigment which can make so much difference to expression. So sound throughout, super coat, lovely tail set and great attitude and ring presence...she was up there with the best in bitches today! 2nd: Rogers Alizo Mandalay Bay. Slightly heavier in build than the winner and not quite so flashy. Having said that she is another quality bitch with all the essentials and beautifully presented. Very pretty head and intense halos. 3rd: Clark s Tripleo Powder Puff This is such a nice bitch, with the prettiest of heads and a sweet expression. Very glamourous girl who took a little while to settle today, but moved out well enough for this place in such a big class. Very well presented and handled.
