2 Read all about it The latest news from Hearing Dogs Volunteer spotlight Volunteer Recruitment Update Our Dog lovers wanted volunteer recruitment campaign has been hugely successful: we have registered over 150 new homes for our puppies to stay in on a long and short term basis in the last year (2016/17). In total we have welcomed over 600 brand new volunteers! Thank you to everyone who has helped us by spreading the word, helping out at (and even running) recruitment events and putting up posters. Word of mouth remains our number one recruitment source for new volunteers. Special thanks go to the following volunteers who have been mentioned by name: Heidi Lay, Ian and Judy Mason, Fabia Reeves, Dan and Amanda Mayo, Sheila Hoffman, Sue Beale, Jackie Marchant and Fiona Daniels. We have also held two successful Volunteer Fairs in Yorkshire, one at Bielby and one outside York, organised by volunteer Richard Cantrell. Both were very well attended and we had many people register an interest in volunteering, some of whom are up and running already! Thank you to all those volunteers who were involved in these events. Name: Bob Bowyer Role: Office Volunteer and Driver What do you get up to? I drive puppies and dogs to their new recipients or socialisers around the country. I have also had the honour of driving some celebrities including Pandora and Linda Robson. I also help out the Volunteering Team with the database and eating cake! Why do you enjoy your role? I enjoy volunteering for Hearing Dogs because I am made to feel part of the team and people are friendly and I see that they are so committed to the charity. The cakes are good too! Why do you volunteer for Hearing Dogs? I volunteer for Hearing Dogs because it is such an important charity and seeing the difference the dogs make to recipients is wonderful. I also love dogs. 3 Deaf Awareness Week 2017 From May 2017 Deaf Awareness Week will celebrate work that has made a difference for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss. Promoted by the UK Council on Deafness, Deaf Awareness Week is also an opportunity to raise awareness that 1 in 6 people in the UK are deaf or have a hearing loss. As part of Deaf Awareness Week Hearing Dogs will be launching a new fundraising pack, in collaboration with Specsavers (more information on page 9). We will also be highlighting some of our wonderful partnerships throughout the week. Thank you to our volunteers I just want to say to all the socialisers that the recipients REALLY, REALLY appreciate all the hard work that you put into looking after the puppies and training them up. Our dogs are only confident in their working lives because of your efforts. Thank you all! Christine Wright with hearing dog Jessie I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in Digby s life so far. You have given me the most amazing gift of this fantastic hearing The UK Council on Deafness have produced some great posters which dog, I am absolutely in love with him can be downloaded by clicking on the image of the poster below. and he has an amazing effect on me. I am really enjoying every minute I spend with him, he is my lifesaver. Some facts: Thank you all so very much. 1 in 6 people in the UK are affected by Lesley Mangan with hearing dog Digby hearing loss. 6.5 million of these are aged 60 and over. 3.7 million are of working age. Around 2 million people in the UK have hearing aids. About 800,000 are severely or profoundly deaf. Adults and children who are deaf or hard of hearing face communication barriers which can cause: - Lack of confidence - Exclusion from society - Depression - Isolation - Unemployment Technology and the way we communicate is helping to change this. Things to remember! If you meet a deaf person, remember to: Face the person while you are speaking, don t turn away. Speak clearly without shouting. Repeat yourself if necessary. Never say it doesn t matter. If the person doesn t understand, don t give up! Write it down or draw a picture. Speak one at a time. Keep your mouth visible. Smile and relax! Don t speak too quickly or too slowly. 3 Volunteer News Spring 2017 Reading all the updates about your adventures with the puppies and watching many of you in puppy class I am amazed at your patience and the fact that you keep coming back for more. It really brings home to us recipients what a huge debt we owe you. Without you we wouldn t have our gorgeous dogs. Joyce Patterson with hearing dog Toby Make lots of life changing friends

6 Volunteers of the Month November Margaret Griffiths Margaret is a fantastic volunteer, who likes to keep busy and is happy to help with just about anything! She dog walks, is a great foster carer, will often do administrative tasks and chips in with whatever she can be helpful with when she s on site at the Beatrice Wright Centre. Margaret is just amazing and always happy to go above and beyond to help us out. Even after an operation to her foot, she couldn t wait to get back to dog walking! December Grace Gibbs Grace has been volunteering in the warehouse, helping fulfil Christmas orders for as long as anyone can remember. As Hearing Dogs legend has it, Grace ordered from the catalogue herself many moons ago and - upon feeling the delivery time was rather tardy - decided to come along and volunteer to do something about it! Grace just appears as if by magic each year, when we need her most. She is always smiling, happy and superefficient. January Graham Drury Graham is regularly seen at our Beatrice Wright Centre sorting various maintenance issues, turning his hand to almost anything putting up fences, painting, furniture removal, relaying flooring, graveling the driveway, fixing things, putting the bins out, clearing leaves and debris from the reception area fountain. We can always rely on Graham. He really makes a difference and volunteers with a lovely attitude and great sense of humour. He's really a lovely man. February Monica Hildred Monica is truly devoted to every dog that comes her way, whether it be full-time training from home, or a dog staying on holiday. With everything she does, there is no doubt that each dog is given the best opportunity to flourish as a hearing dog. Monica is great! We love working with her and hope there ll be lots of future hearing dogs lucky enough to be in her care. March Peter and Sharon Shepperd Peter and Sharon have been with us for four years and have bought their happy, sunny attitude into their volunteering. As well as being fantastic ambassadors for hearing dogs, regularly attending fundraising events, they are socialising their third full-time puppy. No matter what else they re involved with, Peter and Sharon put the dogs they re socialising as their main priority and care deeply for each one of them. They are the best type of ambassadors for the Hearing Dogs volunteer family, never stop giving and are an absolute pleasure to know. April Richard Cantrell Not only is Richard an exemplary Training from Home volunteer, he helps us find others like him too! Richard is a super man in lots of ways. He looks after some of our training dogs at home and more recently organised a Volunteer Fair in his local village to help recruit new volunteers. The event in March simply wouldn't have happened without Richard's generosity, ideas and input into our ongoing volunteer recruitment campaign in Yorkshire. We d be very lucky to find anyone else like him Richard is a true asset to Hearing Dogs. If you know someone you think deserves to be awarded Volunteer of the Month, you can nominate them by sending 250 words and a photo to E volunteer@hearingdogs.org.uk 6 Volunteer News Spring 2017 Make lots of life changing friends

9 Fundraising with Specsavers We are very excited to be celebrating not only our 35th year anniversary, but also our 10-year partnership with Specsavers. To mark this 10th year milestone, we have teamed up for a national campaign, being launched during Deaf Awareness Week, which will see 150 stores raising enough money to sponsor a hearing dog puppy by hosting Paws for Coffee events. Staff and customers will be provided with an informative and educational pack to encourage them to learn basic sign language and deaf awareness skills, helping them to understand the many difficulties deaf people face plus the emotions and feelings that many experience with their disability. If you re interested in finding out about sponsoring a puppy and other ways to donate, you can find more information on our website. Not sure who to contact? Generally these are for public that may be coming across Hearing Dogs for the first time at events, visits or talks given by volunteer speakers. We say goodbye to Gertie and Sadie who are now retiring from the breeding scheme and welcome 17 new broods and studs (find out who on page 16). Puppy Socialising Manchester/ East Cheshire/ Staffordshire Updates from The Grange Welcome Centre news Construction of our new Welcome Centre at The Grange is now well under way, and we are excited to announce that we are now above ground with steel posts and oak frame bases installed. You can keep up to date with how the build is coming along and more information about the Safe and Sound Welcome Centre on the Hearing Dogs Blog. Volunteers Coffee Afternoon Our Volunteers Coffee Afternoons have been running successfully for a few months now. They are the first Friday of every month and run by volunteers. All of our hearing dogs volunteers are welcome and it s a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and dogs! If you re not near The Grange but would like to start one in your area we would be happy to provide a poster, contact Lisa Meller on E lisa.meller@hearingdogs.org.uk Since we launched our new Cheshire East puppy socialising area in 2015 it has been a huge success with 30 full-time puppy socialising homes and two Puppy Training Instructors working in the area. At the beginning of this year we have expanded the catchment to cover Manchester, as well as extending further south into Staffordshire. We are looking for new puppy socialisers in particular around Crewe, Leek and Stoke-on-Trent. If you know anyone who lives in these areas, and could help us train a puppy, then please ask them to get in touch! 12 Volunteer News Spring 2017 Make lots of life changing friends

Occasionally a dog that lacks the confidence to be a fully jacketed hearing dog, will be chosen to help the Charity in a different way by being selected as a Charity Support Dog. Charity Support Dog is an umbrella term for several dog job roles within the charity which include joining our Demonstration Team, becoming an Applicant Assessment Dog (meeting our potential recipients so they can get used to handling a dog, walking them etc.) or a PR dog. These dogs still belong to the Charity but are fostered by a member of staff or a volunteer. Our Charity Support Dogs provide a crucial role in raising public awareness of the Charity. You can find out more about our dog roles and what they mean from our new infographic which is downloadable from the Volunteer News landing page on our website.
