1 H C E ill ountry ande states W estview states C ommunity The Official Publication of the Hill Country Estates HOA & Westview Estates NA Volume 1, Number 3 December 2006 N ewsletter Westview Estate News Mark your calendar now for the Westview Estates Neighborhood meeting on Thursday, January 11. The location has not yet been determined, but there will be more information in the January WE/ HCE newsletter, and you will receive a meeting notice flyer. Start the new year right by getting to know your fellow Westview Estates neighbors! All Westview residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Kevin Dixon, son of longtime Westview residents Jerry and Kay Dixon, will soon be retiring from his post as Chief of the Oak Hill Fire Department. Kevin was recognized at the November 8 meeting of the Oak Hill Association of Neighborhoods for his contributions to the area. He has spent 22 years with the Oak Hill Fire Department and has held the Chief s position for the past 8 years. He has helped the agency grow from a small volunteer department to a professional force with modern equipment, serving a rapidly growing area. Our fire department has grown as well; the new station on Circle Drive will be open for business soon, and an open house for the station is in the works. Do you have news you want to share? Send it to Kevin Good at kgnrc@texas.net for inclusion in our next newsletter. HCE HAPPENINGS Christmas is Coming! Christmas is Coming! By Judy Harrell I know, I know you re talking turkey now! But my computer says it s only 48 days until Christmas! Less than that until our neighborhood Holiday Caroling Party the 10th of December. So make plans for joining in the fun as we stroll around the neighborhood ringing and singing in the holiday season. Those of you who want to be part of the starter group can gather at the Harrell s house (9314 Summer Sky Dr.) about 5:30 p.m. to begin our progressive party. (Snacks and drinks will be served.) We will pick up other music-makers along the way. Don t forget to bring your instruments to help make merry music as well as a flashlight to see the song sheets. We could use a few more hostesses along the way so or give me a call if you want to add to the party by providing snacks in your driveway or on your porch ( or tjharrell@sprintmail.com). I ll be there with bells on! Hope you will be too. In case of rain, the party will be rescheduled. Thanks. HCE Christmas Lights Decorating Contest JUDGING WILL OCCUR DECEMBER 17-23! By Maurine Poe Have your house and yard decorated before the week of December 17, because that s when the judging will take place! 3 As we enjoy our brief fall season in the Austin area, which often seems to consist of a few scattered days between summer and winter, remember that now is the time to invest a little time in planting so that you can enjoy wildflowers and better plants next spring and summer. There is still time to plant wildflowers for a spring display if you don t tarry. Most native Texas wildflowers begin to grow in the fall and spend their first few months as small rosettes in order to take advantage of the typically wetter months, when the chance of encountering weather cold enough to damage them is unlikely. Bluebonnets, Indian Blanket, and Indian Paintbrush are just a few of the many native flowers that can be easily grown in this area and should be planted now. One word of caution don t try to grow wildflowers in an area that is overseeded with winter rye grass. They won t be able to compete with the faster growing and more aggressive grass. Small packets of wildflower seeds are available at most local nurseries, but for larger quantities you may want to consider Wildseed Farms near Fredericksburg or Native American Seed in Junction. Both of these offer a wide variety of native wildflowers It's Time to Plant! By Kevin Good (WE) that not only are beautiful but also are happy to grow in our often harsh weather conditions and shallow soil that many of us have. This is also the time to act if you want to add trees, shrubs or perennial plants to your landscape. By putting plants in the ground now, you will give them time to develop a good system of roots and be fully acclimated before having to withstand the onslaught of our typical hot and dry summers. Just be sure to keep new plantings thoroughly watered through the winter months and for their first year if we don t receive significant rainfall on a regular basis. Finally, if you want to make your yard at least look like fall next year, even if the weather may not fully cooperate, consider planting some of our native trees that can provide a good show of color. Some of the species native to our area that can usually be counted on to provide a fall display are cedar elms, red oaks, flame leaf sumacs, pecans, and big-tooth maples (the lost maples of Lost Maples State Park). These trees all grow fairly quickly and will reward you with warm glows of red, orange and yellow within a few years. So put in a little effort now while it s cool, and sit back and enjoy the beauty when the heat arrives next year! HWY 290 WEST AUSTIN TX Copyright 2006 Peel, Inc. Community Newsletter - December

5 [Note from your editor: We hope that CritterTalk can be a regular monthly column that will contain helpful and interesting information about pets and local wild animal populations. If you have items to contribute, please send them to cbentley@austin.rr.com. Our thanks to Daloma Armentrout (HCE) for gathering the information for this fi rst CritterTalk column.] In view of recent animal-related concerns in our area, the below information is provided from local authorities and may be helpful to us all. From Animal Protection & Control and Town Lake Animal Shelter Stray Pet Rules- Dogs and livestock in the City of Austin and Travis County are required by law to be safely leashed or confined on the owners property at all times, except when a dog is in a designated leash-free area. Cats are not required to be confined or leashed, so APC officers do not pick up roaming cats. If a pet or livestock in your area is wandering, unsupervised and unleashed, please call to make a report. If possible, but without putting yourself at risk, please try to confine a stray animal in a fenced yard or other enclosure to keep the animal safe while an officer makes his/her way to the area. Injured Animals- If the injured animal is a stray, call 311 to make a report to Animal Protection & Control. Injured deer should be reported to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Warden at To report other injured wild animals, call Wildlife Rescue at 472-WILD. Animal Bites- All animal bites to humans MUST be reported to Animal Protection & Control! Rabies continues to be a serious threat to animals and people in our area, so any possible exposure to rabies must be reported. If the animal that bit someone is not currently vaccinated against rabies, or if the rabies vaccination status is unknown, the animal will have to be placed under quarantine for a set period of time and observed for signs of rabies. CritterTalk If a person has been attacked, bitten or scratched by a pet or wild animal and they need emergency care, call 911 immediately. If a person has been attacked, bitten or scratched by a pet or wild animal but emergency care is NOT required, call 311 to report the incident. Cruelty Investigation- Animal cruelty is a serious crime and should be reported to law enforcement. Animal cruelty can be prosecuted and requires a full police investigation. If you witness an act of animal cruelty or suspect that an animal has been a victim of cruel or inhumane treatment, call to file a report with the Austin Police Department. Call in case of an animal cruelty emergency. APC Response- Officers must cover a large geographical area and battle the same traffic we all face. They will respond as quickly as possible to your request, based on the number of calls already received. Please also be aware that not all animal problems can be solved by a simple visit from an officer. Registration- Pet Registration is the City/ County Health Departments way to make sure that all pets in Austin and Travis County are vaccinated against rabies as required by law and have some measure of traceable identification. All dogs and cats more than 4 months old MUST be registered with Town Lake Animal Center. Current rabies vaccination is required, and pets that are spayed or neutered can receive a Lifetime Pet Registration for just $5.00. Benefits for a pet wearing a current Pet Registration tag include a free ride home from APC officers, and emergency medical treatment if found injured. For more information on Pet Registration, please see Sources: Chapter 52, Regulations of Travis County, Texas Governing Animal Control City of Austin Citywide Information Hotline, Town Lake Animal Shelter homepage Animal Cruelty Laws W William Cannon Dr Ste 750 Austin TX Customers prepare delicious meals at Whatcha Got Cooking s fun studio, then take them home to freeze and cook in a snap at your convenience!
