1 Volume 9 Issue 6 THE LAKES COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER June 2017 From the President Hello Residents With the warm weather approaching, most of us start preparing for, summer vacations, school being out, and staying cool through the summer months. With our kids out of school, make sure that you, especially, heed the speed limits and stop signs. For added security, the board has hired a security company to patrol our community, in an effort to keep unwelcomed individuals from entering our community. Do not get alarmed, if you see patrol cars with warning lights patrolling, "mostly" in the evenings. As I have mentioned before, with warmer weather, plants need additional watering,,, so make sure you have adjusted your irrigation to handle the warm days ahead. Lastly, in an effort to keep up our property values, the DRC committee will be sending out letters to residents, with homes needing painting, requesting they paint their homes, within a reasonable amount of time. Not only does new paint freshen the look of your home, but it also protects your home from adverse weather conditions. The next HOA meeting will be held on May 30th 6:30 PM Recreation Center When selecting color choices, you may go to our website or contact DRC chairman, Terry Kellman at TKellman@cox.net to get our color book, showing all of the allowable colors for the community. 2 From the Desk of the Social Director JULY IS NATION ICE CREAM MONTH.. and the Social Committee will be hosting the Lakes sixth year in having the SUNDAE SUNDAY ICE CREAM SOCIAL. You are invited to join us on SUNDAY, JULY 16 TH from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at The RECREATION CENTER. To make sure we can serve all in attendance, reservations must be made. I will be taking reservations the first week in July. An will be sent to you at this time, with information on how to RSVP. When you receive my notification in July and would like to attend, please respond by the date that is stated in the . We served 113 last year and will only be accepting 120 reservations this year. We hope you will take this opportunity, to socialize with friends and neighbors, meet the Social/Welcome Committee Members and introduce yourself to our Board Members, serving our community. 3 Nature Notes Heidi Schewel Wildlife are a major attraction for some of us living here at the Lakes. Birdwatching is an obvious choice for many. We may be amused by rabbits and ground squirrels, annoyed by packrats and raccoons, or wary of snakes, coyotes, javelina, or the occasional fox or bobcat. No matter what your feelings regarding wildlife, the best course of action is always to steer clear and avoid contact. Wild animals are and should remain wild and wary of humans. No matter what the circumstance they can be unpredictable. Human/wildlife or domestic pet/wildlife interactions can be dangerous or fatal. We should keep our distance. Especially now. A number of cases of rabies in bats, bobcats, foxes, and skunks have been confirmed in Pima County this year, with additional cases occurring in neighboring Cochise and Santa Cruz counties. Rabies is a viral disease which attacks the central nervous system, causing encephalitis (swelling of the brain). It is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal, and is thus preventable. In Arizona, the principal rabies hosts are bats, foxes and skunks, all of which are inhabitants of our area. Rabies can also be carried and transmitted by other mammals including bobcats, coyotes, javelina, cats, dogs, horses, cattle, etc. Bobcats, coyotes and javelina are frequent visitors to our community. Rabid animals may exhibit off behavior, and may appear to be disoriented or intoxicated. They may salivate heavily or appear to be thirsty, or may be active at times of the day or night that are unusual for their species. Rabies is usually fatal once symptoms appear. Persons who have come into contact with or have been bitten by a wild animal should seek prompt anti-rabies vaccine and serum treatment to prevent infection. Prevention of the disease is key. Domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and livestock such as horses should be vaccinated regularly for rabies, and should not be permitted to interact with wildlife. Humans should avoid contact with wildlife, especially if animals exhibit unusual behavior or appear to be ill. People should not touch dead animals they come upon, and should keep pets at a distance, as well. 8 Residents: It s that time of year again when our thoughts have turned to spring cleaning and sprucing up our homes. The DRC is always happy to help you with your requests for paint approval or other changes to the look of your property. Be sure to paint a 2 foot swatch sample on the house and in an easy to access location. (front or side of house is great as long as it isn t behind a fence) Please contact the Design Review Committee (DRC) for approval FIRST prior to any permanent changes. Before calling Shirley, please look at the calendar on our website for your proposed dates to insure that the Rec Center has not already been reserved. Reservations must be made no less than two weeks in advance, and a $250 deposit is required two weeks in advance of the event date. Checks are payable to "Lakes at Castle Rock Homeowners Association. The reservation form, calendar and the rules and regulations are on the website. Please remember that there is NO ALCOHOL or SMOKING permitted at the Recreation Center. A maximum of 50 people are allowed. Please call Shirley for more information. FYI...The snake in the Rec. Center pool is not real and that it is there to keep the ducks from pooping in the pool. Also, we ve added some more silver tape "along" the fence as another duck deterrent. Let s make every effort to keep the snake in the pool. It s that time again when Javelina are roaming around the complex. PLEASE be sure your trash cans are behind your fence and no food is available for them to get. They ARE destroying our pretty plants in our yards, so keep an eye out. If you see babies, please DO NOT approach as the adults will defend them against dogs or humans. Also, do not let your dog chase them as they can become injured in the process.
