July 2016 West Leeds
On Saturday 9 th July, Officers from the Inner West Police team attended the Kirkstall Festival - and had a great time meeting the community! The festival runs every year and attracts thousands of people. This year in excess of 15,000 people attended the festival. There were a number of stalls ranging from local businesses, creative groups, charities, various food stalls catering for a wide variety of tastes. Officers from the Kirkstall PWA engaged with the public, gave out crime prevention advice and discussed the role of the police and PCSO s. Officers spoke with people about positive recruitment and a lot of advice given about how to apply to join us. Festival attenders tried on police uniforms, explored the police van and off road motorbikes, with a number of young people and adults asking to see the lights and sirens. Detective Duck was in attendance and got into the spirit of the day even having a dance off with some of the other mascots. Detective duck and PC Edkins as well as a number of festival attenders also took part in a mini running man challenge. Great fun was had by all and officers are looking forward to return to the festival next year.
West Yorkshire Police and organisations from across Yorkshire came together recently for the Heart Yorkshire Children's Day at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation. It provided an unforgettable day of food, good weather and fun-filled sports and educational activity for children and families. Yorkshire, involved over 40 organisations on the day, providing a day to remember for children from the Leeds community, who once again turned out in good numbers to enjoy the event. West Yorkshire Police were in attendance with a team of Special Constables, volunteers and Police staff and Officers, some of whom were promoting the Positive Action Recruitment Campaign. Every child who attended the event tried on a mini Police uniform, entered the prisoner part of the van and sat on an offroad Police motorbike. The exhibition van provided a great changing area for the mascots, which three of our volunteers kindly offered to wear. Around 2,000 people attended the event, which gave us an excellent opportunity to not only liaise with parents about crime reduction and how to keep kids safe online but to enjoy meeting the community as a whole!
Safer Homes, Safer Leeds scheme launched A new scheme has been launched in the Inner North West Leeds of the City in a bid to improve home security. This partnership scheme is designed to work between key agencies, landlords & letting agents, tenants and institutions in Leeds to provide a clear process to manage the risk of burglary. This includes identifying properties and promoting safer accommodation for residents living, studying, and working in Leeds. The aims are: 1. To promote a single standard security standard for private rented sector properties in Leeds District. 2. To manage the security scheme in partnership, accountable to Safer Leeds and stakeholders. 3. Provide crime prevention information to landlords, agents, and tenants on how they can assist in preventing crimes taking place in their property. 4. Improve the security of all accommodation, including multioccupancy lets in order to reduce crime In the photos are Councillors and staff from local organisations with Inspector Howie Milner, Chief Inspector Matt Davison and local Crime Reduction Officers Jo Rostron and Richard Thornton.
Burglary prevention in Leeds As the warmer weather is now here, West Yorkshire Police is urging homeowners to protect their homes and not to be caught out by opportunistic thieves. Thirty per cent of burglaries happen when opportunistic thieves walk in through an unlocked front door and 26 per cent through unlocked or open windows. The campaign highlights the tactics that burglars use and reminds people of the simple steps we can all take to improve our home security and deter burglars from targeting our homes. Don t let a thief catch you out! Keep doors and windows locked at all times even when you re inside. Don t forget to lock the door behind you and remove the key from the lock. Keep keys, cash and valuables out of sight and in a safe place. Door chimes might deter a burglar from entering your property but remember to always lock your door. If you re outside gardening or hanging out washing, make sure doors and windows are locked. Put packaging for expensive items in the bin or take it to be recycled. Don t advertise what s in your house. Make sure door and window locks are fitted to the appropriate standards. Cheap locks or deteriorating fittings all make your home an easy target for burglars. Check that existing security, such as alarms and external lights are working and use them to protect your home. Consider downloading free tracking software for items such as laptops and mobile phones. Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch Group and look out for your neighbours. If you have a garage use it to store your vehicle out of sight. More tips at:
A super fair in Swinnow On Saturday 9th July 2016, Officers from Pudsey Police Station attended Swinnow Primary School for their summer fair. Although the weather wasn t cracking, it didn t dampen spirits. PCSOs Muftee and Chelton showed off the Police van to the youngsters. West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue also showed their fire engine. Inside the school, there were lots of activities for the children. One of the teachers said: Thank you so much for our summer fair. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!. Police help paint the perfect picture Horsforth played host to the second Walk Of Art Festival recently, incorporating over 100 venues and live events across the town. PCSOs Jackie Andrews and Rob Southwood engaged the services of three local out of school clubs to recreate old style police mugshots to be displayed in the Neighbourhood Policing Team office windows. Visitors to the Brownlee Stone Centre also got the opportunity to make their own mugshots on the day, dress up as mini Police Officers and meet their local Officers.
A Special award for the Special Constabulary Leeds District have been formally recognised for delivering excellent partnership work with Leeds Trinity University in Horsforth. PC Fraser Corry, the Leeds Specials Liaison Officer, was presented with an award for providing the 'Most Exciting Employer Placement, which was one of the six main award categories. PC Corry arranged for one of his Special Constables, SC Hannah Morton, to undertake a structured placement with Stainbeck Patrol for a period of six weeks. He supported Hannah throughout her placement and provided feedback to the University. During her placement SC Morton attended a wide variety of policing incidents and made several arrests, her time and experience working with Stainbeck Patrol has given her a head start with her Specials career and been mutually beneficial to her criminology degree. Special Constables work throughout the whole of West Leeds too. To find out more, including how to join, please visit
Direct yourself to some sat-nav safety There has been an rise in theft of integral Satellite Navigation systems along with other property from cars in this area. You can help protect yourself by following these simple steps: When parking your vehicle in a public place try to look for a car park that has Park Mark accreditation. This offers a higher level of security for your vehicle. Park in busy well-lit and well populated areas and when possible areas covered by CCTV. Make sure you remove items of value from your vehicle when leaving it unoccupied - bags, laptops, money, mobile phones, tools and other portable items are easy to steal. Offences can take place anywhere, in a car park, at the side of the road or even when your car is on your drive. If possible park your vehicle in a garage. Check with your vehicle manufacturer to see if they sell additional security devices for integrated sat-navs. Always ensure that your vehicle is locked when leaving it - check the door handles before you walk away.

Dog microchipping grace period is over An initial grace period to allow owners to get their dog microchipped after a change in the law is drawing to a close. As of 6 April 2016 it became mandatory for all dogs over eight weeks old to be microchipped and the details stored on the microchip database up to date. The council will start enforcing its new legal powers from 1 July to ensure people to get their dogs chipped. The three month grace period was to allow owners to take appropriate action. All dogs the council s dog wardens come into contact with are scanned for a microchip. From 1 July, if any of these dogs aren t microchipped, wardens will offer to arrange this for owners. If this offer is declined, a new enforcement notice will be issued. This legal notice instructs owners to have their dog chipped within 21 days. If dogs still aren t chipped after this period owners face prosecution. If convicted, the maximum fine is 500. The new law also gives the council powers to take dogs from owners to microchip them and pass on any costs to the owners. Dog wardens have been working with the Dogs Trust for some time to offer microchipping. In the last three months dog wardens have microchipped 300 dogs free of charge at community events. Vets can also microchip dogs. Gavin Jarrett, dog warden said: We want to reassure people that they aren t going to be hit with an automatic 500 fine if their dog isn t microchipped now. If people point blank refuse to get their dog chipped that s when we ll be issuing the legal notices. Failing to comply with notice could then result in prosecution. We think the costs and benefits of microchipping far outweigh a potential 500 fine and a criminal conviction so we d really encourage people to do the right thing. If people need any information about microchipping or where to get it done, they can contact us for advice. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, executive member for environment and sustainability said: A quick check of our found dogs Facebook page will tell you that we are still picking up too many dogs without any form of identification. It s in your and your dog s best interest to be microchipped so if they stray or get lost it will make it much easier for us to reunite you. We ve given people extra time to make sure they are on the right side of the law. However, as people have now had plenty of fair warning, we will be enforcing the new legislation. Owners can contact the dog warden service for advice about microchipping on Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted into the loose skin between a dog s shoulder blades with a sterile needle. Implanting the chip will feel like a standard injection for a vaccination. Compulsory microchipping and ensuring details are up to date will help ensure stray, lost or stolen dogs can be identified and reunited with their owners. All puppies over eight weeks old must now be chipped so they can be traced back to their breeder. If selling your dog or giving it to a new owner, the dog must be microchipped before you do so. It s up to the new owner to ensure their contact details are registered. As of 6 April 2016 dogs over eight weeks old must be microchipped. The only exclusions are dogs that are certified by a vet to be a working dog or where a vet provides a certificate for the duration of a dog s illness stating that it cannot be chipped for health reasons. Details that have to be registered include: Dogs name, sex, breed (or description), colour, date of birth (or accurate estimate) License details for breeders if the breeder is also the dogs keeper. Also need to state which local authority the breeder is licensed by. If the microchip database doesn t hold this information, or the information isn t up to date, the dog may be regarded as not microchipped and subject to enforcement. No keeper may transfer a dog to a new keeper until it has been properly microchipped. Where a dog is transferred to a new keeper, the new keeper must record their full name, address, telephone number and change of dogs name (if applicable) with the database.
