2 As the year draws to an end, I am pleased that the committee has been successful in offering a wider variety of GSD activities, to not only our current membership, but with the view of trying to encourage all GSD owners to attend events that are not just skewed toward the Show Dog. We are one of the few breed clubs that are able to offer this due to the versatility of the German Shepherd Dog. In my opinion this is an area of the Qld club that should be a priority for any committee each year. One of the highlights has been the Dog Lovers Show, this is an event that saw approximately people come through the gates. The Club had a great stand and attracted a huge number of people to it. This type of PR for our breed is somewhat unique due the diversity of people that come by the stand and stop for a chat. During the year we have included a Herding Trial, Introduction to tracking workshop, as well as our normal events which have included the Group 5 Obedience Trial, Brisbane and Zone 2 Members Competitions, Double Header Championship Shows, and Restricted Trial, and five Breed Surveys. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank my committee and those members who have helped me throughout the past 3 years during my role as President, you have made it so much more enjoyable. Now is the time for some me time and time for my own dogs. I will always be here to help where I can. I wish all members a safe and happy Christmas and best wishes for the year ahead. 4 The GSDCQ has held four Breed Surveys since our last newsletter. Congratulations to all our successful German Shepherd Dogs and their proud owners! We anticipate, subject to final approval, the first Breed Survey in 2019 will be on 17 March in the Brisbane region.

5 Early morning start at 5.30am with GSD adventurers out and about at the Ipswich Dog Obedience Club for the "Introduction to Tracking Seminar". Special thanks to Coral Pethers for her very informative theory and practical sessions. Positive uplifting morning followed by a great BBQ breakfast cooked up by Trevor. 6 In the upper jaw there are 20 teeth 6 upper incisors + 2 canines + 8 premolars+ 4 molars In the lower jaw there are 22 teeth 6 lower incisors + 2 canines + 8 premolars + 6 molars WHY IS IT CALLED A GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG? The German Shepherd Dog is one of the few breeds whose official name actually includes the word dog. This is a bit weird or is it? The word dog was added so people understood whether you were talking about a human German Shepherd (someone who tends the livestock), OR the dog helping him. Do not ever feed the following substances as they are toxic to dogs (note this is not an exhaustive list): onions, onion powder, garlic, chocolate, coffee or caffeine products, mouldy or spoiled foods or compost, avocado, bread dough, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, sultanas (including in Christmas cakes etc), currants, nuts including macadamia nuts, fruit stones (pits) e.g. mango seeds, apricot stones, avocado stones; fruit seeds, corncobs; green unripe tomatoes, mushrooms; fish constantly, cooked bones; small pieces of raw bone, fatty trimmings/ fatty foods, Salt, Xylitol (sugar substitute found in some products such as some types of sugarfree chewing gum, lollies, baking goods, toothpaste and sugarfree peanut butter).

7 Take your dogs for their exercise early in the morning in summer, before the day gets too hot. When you take your dog for a walk, it is not just the heat from above that can be a hazard think about the ground under the dog's paws. Take them to cooler areas. Walk them on the grass if you can. Some dogs do not know when to stop, and this can be dangerous in the summer months. If you're throwing a ball, you're not getting as hot as the dog who is chasing the ball constantly. Some of our young and active dogs, they're not going to think about stopping exercising when they should stop. They will keep running and running until they go into heatstroke. Dogs that are catching balls in waves, they can also be taking in salt water which can make them vomit and also give them diarrhoea, and it can be lethal for them if they've taken in enough salt water. Always ensure your four-legged (or feathered, or scaly!) friends have fresh clean water every day and lots of it! More than one dog has been known to simply upend the water dish in an attempt to cool down too, so you may also need to top it up regularly (or make it easy on yourself and buy a shell pool!). Not even for 30 seconds. Even on cloudy days, the temperature inside the car will increase very quickly even with the window down or the air conditioning on. Dogs in particular are at severe risk of heat exhaustion and death in this situation, so it's never worth the risk.
