(Unofficial wording) This routine must consist of dressage moves off lead in the heel, or free, position. The natural rhythmic movement of the dog should be continuous and in time with the musical beat and rhythmic speed of the music. It may be at more than one pace i.e. walk, trot or canter and in any direction. High trotting must be consistent. All changes of direction and gait must maintain the continuous movement of the dog and flow of the routine. Heelwork to Music: (Unofficial wording) This routine must be choreographed based on any of the 8 heelwork positions as specified by the KC, with the dog working off lead. All 8 positions do NOT have to be used but the position must remain consistent & accurate. In the event of a tie for first place, the interpretation mark will decide the placing. Dancing with Dogs: (Official wording) This routine must be recognizable as a dance on the part of the handler. The dog may carry out moves off lead from dressage, freestyle or a combination in any position. The handler should use consistent rhythmic foot patterns in time with the music s beat, together with some arm-ography. The dog must use a combination of moves off lead from dressage, freestyle or a combination in any position whilst the handler executes their footwork. A variety of forward, backward, sideways and pivots, together with contrasting and synchronised moves, with good use of space is desirable at all levels and will gain extra marks. In the event of a tie the Interpretation of both handler and dog will decide the placing. Entry forms must be accompanied by the appropriate fees and a stamped addressed envelope, with the exception of internet entries. 11. The entries for competition will be published in the programme. 12. For the duration of the competition all dogs must be on a lead except when competing or practising prior to competition. A public community park is part of the premise of the hall and may be used by the competitors to exercise their dogs. All faeces must be collected and disposed of in the bins provided. 13. Costume appropriate to the routine is encouraged. Dogs may only wear one collar, which may be dressed. 14. No costume or routine should bring discredit to the sport and the dignity of the dog must be respected throughout the routine. 15. It is the competitor s responsibility to be available for their class and running order. 16. After a dog has commenced competing in a Class no substitution of Handler is permitted in that Class. 17. No activity shall be conducted which may be injurious to the dog. The KC banned moves apply to this event: dog held above the head, dog forward/backward rolls, dog on handler s upturned feet, dog headstands. 18. Food and toys shall not be carried in the ring, or given to a dog whilst being judged. Smothering hands with food prior to the performance will be considered cheating and the competitor will be eliminated. 19. If the dog fouls in the ring before, during or after the performance the routine will be immediately eliminated. 20. No person shall carry out punitive correction or harsh handling of any dog at any time within the precincts of the competition. 21. Once a dog has entered the ring to compete, no further practice may be carried out. 22. Routines may start and end wherever the handler chooses provided both the handler and dog are in the ring. Handlers may change their routine to a practice round before or during the routine, but NOT after the routine has been completed and on leaving the ring. 23. Dogs will be marked down for excessive barking and noise unless cued and obviously a part of the routine. 24. If the music stops during a routine the competitor must be given an opportunity to complete the routine. The Handler s backup music may be used and/or alternative equipment, if this was the reason for failure. The Judges should continue marking from the point at which the music stopped. If the competitor chooses to withdraw from the class no marks will be awarded. 25. The decision to withdraw from competition is entirely at the discretion of the competitor. However, a competitor may not withdraw once a routine has been completed and scored. 26. The music and routine must be suitable for a family audience and the spectator appeal of the programme should be apparent. 27. Props appropriate to the routine may be used and must remain in the ring and not intentionally removed until completion of the routine. The use of real firearms or weapons is prohibited, nor must any simulated gunshot be used. Replicate firearms and weapons must be shown to the Judges at the onset of the routine. 28. The use of voice and body language is encouraged and handlers may make contact with the dog if part of the routine. The bearing and deportment of the Handler should be appropriate to the routine.

4 JUDGING Judges chosen for this event are expected to maintain and abide by the highest standards in accordance with Kennel Club Rules and Regulations and appropriate Code of Best Practice as published by the KC from time to time. Judges discretion prevails and Judges decisions are final. No competitor shall impugn the decision of the Judges. The Organiser of this event will ensure that those invited to judge are competent to fulfil their engagement taking into account the nature of the competition. In the event of the handler physically disciplining the dog in the ring the Head Judge must eliminate the dog from further competition in that class. The Judges must observe the handler and dog at all times whilst entering the ring, during performance and on exiting the ring, even after elimination from competition. In the event of competitors obtaining equality of marks, in Musical Dressage the accuracy mark will decide the placing; in Heelwork to Music the Accuracy mark will decide the placing; in Freestyle the interpretation mark will decide the placing; and in Dancing With Dogs the Interpretation mark will decide the placing. Where there is still equality of marks the order shall be decided at the discretion of the Head Judge. The dog should work in a willing and natural manner. Excessive noise and barking will be penalised and a maximum of 4 marks can be deducted from the overall score at the Judge s discretion. Competitors cannot be judged by a family member/spouse, business partner or be a resident at the same address as a scheduled Judge. Any unnecessary physical assistance to the dog must be penalised with points deducted from the Accuracy and Execution section. Any activity that may be injurious to the dog, or is a banned KC move will result in immediate elimination from the ring by the Head Judge. The Organiser reserves the right to appoint an alternative Judge should a Judge be unable to fulfil their appointment. The Organiser, in consultation with the Judges, may alter the arrangements of the running order as necessary, should circumstances dictate on the day of the event. There will be two Judges to each Class and the marks of each Judge will be combined and averaged for the overall mark. In Dances With Dogs Contents and Interpretation will be marked by both Judges and averaged for the overall mark, but the Accuracy and Execution will be split: one Judge will mark the dog and the other will mark the Handler. These marks will then be combined and averaged for the overall mark. The Judging Criteria is as follows: CONTENT 10 marks The content conforms to the definitions of each Class and should be varied, with no excessive repetition of moves, and appropriate to the routine. Moves should be appropriate to the structure and conformation of the dog and should have a greater impact than those of the handler, except in Dances with Dogs where the impact should be equal. Degree of difficulty of moves will be taken into account. ACCURACY AND EXECTION OF MOVEMENT 10 marks All moves, including heelwork, should be executed accurately and smoothly, with the dog responding promptly and appropriately to cues given (verbal or signal) including the use of a prop. The dog should work in a natural and willing manner, with the handler and dog working as a team. The bearing and deportment of the handler is appropriate to the routine, without crouching, or large excessive arm/hand signals which lures the dog into position or move including the use of a prop. MUSICAL INTERPRETATION 10 marks The interpretation of the phrasing, timing, character or storyline of the music should be apparent and the choice of music should suit the team. The emphasis should be on the dog s movements although the handler should be expressive. In Dancing With Dogs the Interpretation of dog and handler movements should be of equal importance. The Handlers dress/costume, dressed collar, and props used, should be suitable and applicable to the interpretation of the routine. Choreography should be flowing and not a series of disjointed moves. It should show content emphasising the phrasing/storyline of the music, a balanced structure of line and shape, elements of contrast and speed, and good use of the performance area. When judging a routine the judges should take into account the following score structure: 1 1.9: Foundation skills need consolidation on today s performance 2 3.9: A basic and limited performance requiring further work 4 5.4: Performing at an adequate level with scope for improvement

5 Points will be awarded above this level * official classes only : A reasonably good and competent programme addressing the criteria, but requiring fineness 7 8.9: A highly competent performance, meeting the criteria and demonstrating informed and appropriate skills 9-10: Outstanding. A sophisticated performance demonstrating creativity and flair and exceeding all criteria Where applicable judges should mark to 1 decimal place. DIRECTIONS From M25 Junction 11 (Chertsey) take the A320, St Peter s Way, (dual carriage way) in the direction of Woking. After half a mile, at the first roundabout, turn right on the A320 heading towards Chertsey, past St Peter s Hospital which will be on the left.
