1 Monthly news, events, and fun from your best friend's home away from home Dear Dog Lovers, It s May which means it's time to celebrate those who give us life -- our mothers :) We'd like to give a big Thank you to all the wonderful parents who have entrusted the care of their furry babies to us. At Paws, we are also celebrating our momma dogs. Yep, our nursery is full yet again. Leia, a terrier mix, was abandoned in an apartment with her four newborns. She was eventually brought to the SC Animal Shelter who asked Paws to care for them. The ordeal has taken a toll on her, but her puppies are thriving and she is slowly gaining strength. They will all be ready for adoption in 2-3 weeks. Check our Facebook page for photos and updates on these adorable babies and see pg. 3 for a peek at the pups! 2 For dog lovers, it's tough to sit by and do nothing when there are so many homeless dogs out there. Some people do their part by choosing to adopt instead of buy, others donate to nonprofit organizations, and some volunteer at local shelters. Every one of these gestures helps the animal community, no good deed is too small. Then there are those who have done all of the above, but to them it just isn't enough. Enter Sue Allan. When the Lake Forest Paws staff first met Sue, she came to us in need of boarding for her two sweet Shar Pei (she now has three Shar Pei). Not long after, Sue began coming to us for help with some rescue Shar Pei in desperate need of baths and temporary boarding. We soon learned that Sue was dedicated to saving homeless Shar Pei and finding them forever homes. It all started with an adorable Shar Pei named Bella. In 2007, Sue wondered if her only dog, Bella, was lonely and decided she would try her hand at fostering. It didn't take much research for Sue to find out that there was no Shar Pei rescue organization in Southern California. By fortunate circumstance, Sue met Jody Orr who was independently rescuing Shar Pei. The two combined forces and with Jody's Shar Pei and shelter-to-adopt experience and Sue's formal marketing, accounting, and business experience they cofounded the aptly named rescue Shar Pei rescue organization, Pei People. Sue and Jody love the Shar Pei breed and made it their goal to rescue and then re-home as many homeless Shar Pei as possible. Many of the rescues come to them in rough shape. Whether the health conditions require just a quick fix or some serious medical care, Pei People is committed to seeing it through. In Sue's words, "We don't always know what we are going to get from a shelter (like a box of chocolates), but once we rescue a dog from a shelter, we are committed for life." With their big hearts and numerous resources, Sue Allan, left photo, and Jody Orr, right photo, are dedicated to saving the lives of Shar Pei in need. With a high success rate, including 71 adoptions in 2013 and 16 in 2014 so far, you've got to wonder how they do it. Sue gushes about Pei People's amazing team of volunteers and supporters. Many volunteers foster the rescues until permanent homes can be found. In some circumstances, Pei People works with private kennels, like Paws Pet Resorts, to house dogs when they exceed available foster homes. Sue says the organization can always use more foster homes, particularly in Orange County. Not much is required of you to be a foster, just a loving home. Pei People is a nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to saving the lives of homeless Shar Pei. The rescue organization's efforts span across California, Arizona, and Nevada. While Pei People does some fundraising, they rely a great deal on volunteer foster homes. If you are interested in becoming a Pei People foster parent, would like to donate, or for no cost ways to support, visit

5 This year is just flying by. Spring is here along with warm sunny days, blooming flowers, and frustrating allergies. Just as humans can suffer from seasonal allergies, so can dogs. The spring and summer months are worst for flare ups. If you suffer from allergies, you understand how uncomfortable and painful they can be. Your pup's allergies are not something to be ignored. Keep reading for tips on how to recognize allergies and how to treat them. Signs Your Pup Is Suffering From Seasonal Allergies When your dog's allergies have really started to make him uncomfortable, the signs are pretty clear. If your pup has started to scratch, lick, and chew a lot more than usual, chances are he is suffering from allergies. In cases where the scratching and chewing has become excessive, skin abrasions and even hotspots can develop. It's best to take action when symptoms are still mild. Tips for Allergy Relief The first and foremost course of action should be regular baths. This comes with a warning because too much bathing with the wrong shampoo can leave your dog's skin even drier and itchier than it was before. Shoot for once a week bathing with a hypoallergenic, moisturizing, or oatmeal shampoo to help soothe the skin. For extra moisture, use a conditioner on your dog's coat just as you would on your own hair. In more severe cases, a medicated shampoo and/or rinse prescribed by your veterinarian may be more effective. Natural supplements can also help with the condition of your dog's skin and coat. Omega 3 fatty acid supplements have many health benefits including skin and coat improvement. Coconut oil is another all natural remedy that can be ingested or applied topically. It has been known to help with a number of skin ailments including cuts, rashes, and overall condition of the skin and coat. If your dog's allergies have gotten out of hand and it's clear your poor pup is extremely uncomfortable or in pain, it's time to take him to the vet. Your vet may decide to prescribe your dog with an antihistamine. In general, you should always consult with your vet if you suspect your dog is suffering from seasonal allergies and before administering any kind of self-prescribed treatment. Does the Name Pavlov Ring a Bell? Does the sound of a doorbell bring chaos to your home? Many dogs react excitedly to the sound of a doorbell. They bark and make a mad rush for the door, ready to greet the visitor, be it friend or foe. The simple act of ringing your doorbell at random times throughout the day can desensitize your dog to the sound. The doorbell will become another meaningless background noise. Classic Pavlov conditioning diagram using a bell and food stimulus. This same tactic can be used in other training areas. You can take this one step further, and train your dog to go lay down at the sound of the doorbell. Ring the doorbell and run to your dog s bed. Throw a treat on the bed and play with your dog there. Repeat this throughout the day for several days. When your dog starts going to his bed at the sound of the bell, raise the criteria and require a down before rewarding.
