3 DVG Regulations Mantrailing DVG Mantrailing Sports-test regulations for the Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine e.v. (DVG) This Mantrailing trial is a pure sport-dog test. It is not intended to certify any operational capability. In order to take part in the test a successful BH-trial is required. At the end of the trial, no points are given, but rather only a pass or not passed will be made known by the judge. For traffic safety the dog handler has to wear a safety vest. In addition, the dog also must be marked clearly visible. Furthermore, the dog must be good to see at dark. If the trail is crossing traffic special safety precautions have to be taken. For That reason the trial organization has to provide a sufficient number of supporting personnel. These rules are meant as addition to an FCI/IRO SAR Rule Set (Search and Rescue) and can be seen as an entry level and possible transition into the area of SAR. 5 DVG Regulations Mantrailing A. General Regulations 1. Trial Application The Mantrailing test is to be organized by the club. It is subject, like any other event, to event authorization which is to be requested via a trial application from the DVG main office. The dog handler is liable for himself and his dog in the event of any accidents during the testing event. 2. Qualifications The dog must have reached the required minimum age of 15 months on the day of test. A prior successful BH Test is required. Each Mantrailing Test counts as 3 phases, and on any up to 36 phases can be judged per judge. If more than 36 phases are required and only one judge is available, the trial has to be extended by half a day or even one additional full day. Sick or injured dogs are excluded from the trial. The same corresponds to pregnant or lactating bitches. A separate publication of the VDH informs about vesting periods for those bitches. Bitches in heat always do start at the end of the test. A valid scorebook for the dog must be presented. Prior to the trial the judge will conduct a temperament test and an identity control (chip / tattoo number). During the whole event the dog handler has to behave sportsmanlike. Unsportsmanlike behaviour or rude violations will result in disqualification. The judge s decision is final and incontestable. 6 DVG Regulations Mantrailing Further Regulations The DVG-Mantrailing regulations are a supplement to the valid FCI/ VDH/ IPO regulations. Therefore, all regulations, such as: Permission of dogs and dog handlers Event authorization Scorebook Judges Trial Secretary Trial days Disciplinary and administrative Laws do apply here as well. 4. Judges Only judges who certify rescue dogs or specially trained IPO judges are authorized to judge a Mantrailing trial. 6 Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine

7 DVG Regulations Mantrailing B. Mantrailing Trial 1. Levels: Level I (MT-1) Track length: m, Age of trace: minimum of 4 hours Terrain: quiet housing area, forest, meadow, three direction changes. Time limit: 25 minutes Start: If the trail is taken up properly, the judge is permitted to confirm. Level II (MT-2) Track length: m, Age of trace: minimum of 6 hours Terrain: Regular (not quiet) housing area, forest, meadow, four direction changes. Time limit: 30 minutes Start: If the trail is taken up properly, the judge is permitted to confirm. Level III (MT-3) Track length: m, Age of trace: minimum of 18 hours Terrain: Regular (not quiet) housing area, forest, meadow, traffic area. Time limit: 45 minutes Start: No feedback from judge. 2. Execution: The tracklayer walks the trail in normal pace. He/ She has provided the judge with a detailed plan containing all necessary information Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine 7

8 DVG Regulations Mantrailing concerning direction changes, crossings and other noteworthy information. Recording with GPS is permitted. The tracklayer enters the trail after remaining at the starting point for a short while. At the end of the trail the tracklayer is to be picked up by car. Air ventilation and windows have to be shut. 20 minutes prior to the start the tracklayer will be taken back to the end of the trail by car. Before the tracklayer starts walking the trail he/she will produce samples with his/her odour and will put them into plastic bags. Then he/she will give the plastic bags to the trial secretary. He will hand over a sample to the candidate shortly before the start. The handler has to report to the judge with his already fully prepared dog. The dog handler can use a search leash with a length of up to 10 m. The minimum distance from Handler to Dog while trailing has to be 3 meters. The dog has to work on a harness but also wear a collar. During the whole trail the dog handler must not put any pressure or force on his dog. During reporting the dog handler has to announce how the dog will indicate. Allowed is: barking, sitting, standing and lying in front of the tracklayer. Any kind of pressing or climbing will result in termination of the trial. During the search the dog should follow the trace that was laid by the tracklayer. The handler can keep the leash long or short. The judge will explain the starting point to the handler. The judge and the trial secretary then will follow the team in a suitable distance. During the search the handler is allowed to make a break which will count from the time limit. Any support by the dog handler or the tracklayer concerning indication is forbidden. The dog handler has to report the indication to the judge and will wait for his permission to go to the tracklayer. The dog has to indicate until the handler has reached him. The trial finishes with reporting out by the dog handler and the announcement of the result. 3. Evaluation: The judge evaluates the work at the starting point, the work on the track and the indication of the tracklayer. 9 DVG Regulations Mantrailing The judge may terminate the trial if the dog shows clear deficits and/or is not willing to work. In addition, the trial will be terminated if the handler is losing control of his dog or if the dog shows serious limitations. Unsportsmanlike behaviour of the dog handler or aggressive behaviour of the dog will result in an immediate disqualification. In case of not finding or not recognizing the tracklayer the trial cannot be passed. The same applies if the time limit is exceeded. 4. Titles: The earned title is not valid for breeding, show breed survey or placement for an exhibition of a member FCI organization.
