James City County Parks and Recreation, as well as the Sight Hound Organization of Tidewater and membership, are not responsible for loss or injury to you, your family, or your animals. SHOT will allow substitutions for lame hounds or hounds in season. Bitches known to be in season should not be brought onto the trial grounds as they represent an attractive nuisance to the dogs of other competitors. Please bring your own shade. Running water, electricity, and full restrooms are available. In the event of severe weather SHOT will follow it s Severe Weather Policy and Procedure which can be seen at To learn more about AKC s Lure Coursing program or the Sighthound breeds competing in it, please visit ALL DOGS RUN AT OWNERS SOLE RISK NOTICE TO ALL EXHIBITORS All entries must be one year of age or older on the day of the test. Each dog requires an individual entry form for each event in which it is entered. Entries will not be accepted without fees, signatures or the Agreement found on the Official AKC Entry Form. Bitches in season and lame dogs will be refused entry and, if presented at inspection, will be refunded entry fees. Mixed breeds must be spayed or neutered to be eligible to run. AKC registered dogs with breed disqualifications may be entered. Coursing is an athletic activity that can tax a dog s physical strength. Dogs that are overweight and/or out of condition may be at greater risk for injury and exhaustion. The Inspection Committee has the authority to disallow a dog s entry into a test, and in such instances, applicable entry fees will be refunded. Battery powered, continuous loop lure machines will be used. The lure will consist of white plastic strips. Backup equipment will be available. Exhibitors should follow their veterinarian s recommendation to assure their dogs are free of parasites, any communicable diseases and have appropriate vaccinations. The Huntmaster is responsible for field safety and therefore he/she is in complete charge of all dogs and handlers on the field. In service to this responsibility, he/she has the authority to stop the lure in any potentially dangerous situation and signal the handler to retrieve a testing dog. Any decisions made by the event s officiating judge(s) regarding the performance of an entered dog shall be final. Full discretionary power is given to the judge(s) to withhold any and all qualifications for lack of merit. The Judge(s) is responsible for ensuring compliance with the AKC Regulations on the field. No entry fees will be refunded if the event cannot be started or completed by reason of riots, civil disturbances, fire, extreme and/or dangerous weather conditions, an act of God, public emergency, act of a public enemy, strikes or any other cause beyond the control of the Club or its members and representatives. Persons exhibiting conduct detrimental to AKC/PKCLC/any dog(s)/other person(s) will be asked to leave the trial site. The event-hosting club, its agents, members, representatives, volunteers, James City County etc, assume no liability or responsibility for any loss, damage or injury sustained by exhibitors, handlers, or to any of their dogs or property and further assumes no responsibility for injury to children or spectators before, during, or after this event

4 There will be permanent restroom facilities located near the field. Bring your own water and shade. No littering. Pick up after your dogs. There will be a $5.00 fine for NOT cleaning up after your hounds. There will be a $5.00 fine for any dogs off lead on the trial grounds ~ including after the trial. All rights to televise, videotape, advertise, photograph, promote or otherwise exploit this event are vested in the club, or in persons to whom assignments of such rights have been made in writing by the club. All persons and animals attending these shows grant the club the right to use their likeness and voice in any matter without further consent. A penalty of $5.00 will be assessed for any and each loose dog(s) not competing in the course in progress. A return check fee of $15.00 will be assessed for any check(s) returned for insufficient funds. FOR FIRST TIME COURSERS AND HANDLERS WHAT ARE PRE-ENTRIES? ~ Entries made before the closing date. However even if your entry is mailed in time yet due to the failure of the postal service, it is not received in time for the Test Secretary to have it at the Event, then you will have to fill out day of entry forms on the day of the trial. Always have your dog's registration materials with you when you go to a test. SLIP LEADS ~ There is a type of collar for coursing called a slip lead, which is worn only to control the dog prior to "release". The collar drops away as the dog is released to chase the lure and they run without anything around their necks that could be dangerous. ***NO CHOKE COLLARS OF ANY KIND WILL BE WORN WHILE TESTING*** *ENTRIES MAY WARE A FLAT COLLAR WITH NO TAGS* INSPECTION~ dogs will be inspected by a designated Inspection Committee consisting of at least two persons who are members of the Field Committee and who shall inspect each entered dog for lameness, fitness to compete and female estrus (in season). Inspection shall take place prior to any form of wrapping being applied to the dog. In the opinion of the Inspection Committee, any entry found to be lame, unfit to compete or in season shall not be allowed to enter and the applicable entry fees shall be refunded. ROLL CALL ~ is the time, prior to the commencement of coursing, by which you are supposed to have your dog ready for inspection by the Inspection Committee. At roll call the dog is examined for lameness, and breed disqualifications (where applicable). Bitches are examined to see if they show any evidence of being in season. After roll call the list of passed hounds is taken to the Field Test Secretary so that the run order can be prepared. EXPERIENCED HANDLERS Dogs can go directly to the Inspection Committee and a Run Order List will be posted. WHAT MUST MY DOG DO TO PASS THE C.A.T.? The Coursing Ability Test (C.A.T.) is a pass/fail test wherein all entrants always run singly. This is to say they run once, and they run alone. Because safety is of the utmost importance, the C.A.T. takes into consideration the individual dog pursuing qualification and therefore has two different course lengths to accommodate the type and size of the entrant. In either case, dogs will chase a lure made of plastic strips. DOGS LESS THAN 12 TALL & FLAT FACED DOGS. Any entrant that is less than 12 tall at the withers and/or brachycephalic will run a clearly marked 300-yard course that is basically rectangular in shape with turns no more acute than 90 degrees. For a 300-yard course, a dog must complete the test in less than 1 ½ minutes. DOGS MORE THAN 12 TALL. Any entrant that is taller than 12 at the withers and not brachycephalic (flat faced) shall run a clearly marked 600-yard course (or as close to 600 yards as possible) that is basically rectangular in shape with turns no more acute than 90 degrees. For a 600-yard course, a dog must complete the test in less than 2 minutes. In order to pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within the maximum amount of time for the course length. The judge keeps the official time and decides the merits of the dog s performance. If there is a question which course a dog should run, the judge will decide. CAN MY DOG EARN AN AKC TITLE FOR COURSING ABILITY? Three titles will be awarded for dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test the required number of times. These are suffix titles that will appear on a dog s pedigree with a higher-level title superseding a lower level title. Coursing Ability (CA) Awarded to a dog that passes the Coursing Ability Test three times under at least two different judges. Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) - Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test ten times. Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 25 times. Coursing Ability Excellent 2 (CAX2) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 50 times. A higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional 25 passes. RUN ORDER LIST ~ this is a posted list of the running order for the dogs participating in the event. ~ Always check the record sheet after the Roll Call to confirm your dog s Run Order.

5 CHAPTER XV COURSING ABILITY TEST REGULATIONS January 2010 Section 1. Purpose. The purpose of the AKC Coursing Ability Test is to provide all dogs and their owners an enjoyable, healthy activity in which they can participate. Dogs run singularly and are required to complete their course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a maximum amount of time. This is a pass fail event. Based on the sport of lure coursing, Coursing Ability Tests will serve as an introduction to the sport for all eligible dog owners. Section 2. All applicable administrative regulations governing Lure Coursing Tests shall apply to Coursing Ability Tests unless specifically addressed in this chapter. Section 3. Eligibility to Enter. Coursing Ability Tests are open to all dogs at least 12 months of age that are individually registered with the AKC, recorded in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program, individually registered with a foreign or domestic registry organization whose pedigrees are acceptable for AKC registration, dogs granted a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) number, dogs with AKC Limited or Conditional Registration, or dogs enrolled in the AKC Canine Partners program. Dogs with breed disqualifications are eligible to enter. Females in season may not enter. A dog may enter only once per event. (An event is defined by an event number.) Section 4. Clubs Eligible to Hold Coursing Ability Tests. Any club licensed to hold AKC Lure Coursing events is automatically licensed to hold a Coursing Ability Test. At some point in the future after an initial start-up period, any club licensed to hold companion events may apply to become licensed to hold Coursing Ability Tests. The start-up period will be decided by the Performance Events Department. Section 5. Inspection Committee. An inspection committee consisting of at least two persons who are members of the field committee shall inspect each entry for lameness, fitness to compete and females in season. Inspection shall take place prior to any form of wrapping being applied to the dog. In the opinion of the inspection committee, any entry found to be lame, unfit to compete or a female in season shall not be allowed to enter and entry fees shall be refunded. Section 6. Making Event Application. Licensed clubs may make application to the American Kennel Club to hold an event on a designated form downloadable from the AKC website at Paper or applications will be accepted. No on-line event application process will be available. Approval and close out correspondence would all be done via . Events may be either stand-alone tests or may be held at the conclusion of a club s Lure Coursing event. In either case the Coursing Ability Test must be applied for as a separate event. If a club is concerned that entries may be more than can be accommodated, the club may state a numeric limit in the premium. The application fee shown on the form must accompany the application. A club may hold up to eight Coursing Ability Tests per calendar year. A club may hold no more than two Coursing Ability Tests on the same day. If a Coursing Ability Test is held at the conclusion of a Lure Coursing event, the club may use the same premium however both event numbers must appear on the entry form. Section 7. Eligibility to Judge. All AKC approved Lure Coursing event judges are approved to judge a Coursing Ability Test. Section 8. Course Design. The course shall be basically rectangular in shape with turns no more acute than 90 degrees. The total length of the course shall be no less than 600 yards and should be as close to 600 yards as is possible. The lure will consist of plastic strips. Depending of the size and type of dog, the dog will run either the full course or a 300-yard course. The 300- yard distance shall be clearly marked. Safety is of utmost importance. Many of the dogs running the Coursing Ability Test will not posses the agility of a sight hound and this must be a consideration in the design of a course. Section 9. Distance and Maximum Time. Dogs run singularly. 300-Yard Course. This distance is for dogs shorter than 12 inches at the withers and / or brachycephalic ( flat-faced ) dogs. A dog must complete this course in less than 1 ó minutes. 600-Yard Course. This distance is used for all dogs that do not run the 300-yard course. A dog must complete this course in less than 2 minutes. If there is a question which course a dog should run, the judge will decide. Section 10. Passing Performance. The Coursing Ability Test is a pass fail event. In order to pass, the dog must complete the course with enthusiasm and without interruption within the maximum amount of time for the course length. The judge keeps the official time and decides the merits of the dog s performance. Section 11. Ribbons or Rosettes. A club holding Coursing Ability Test shall offer a ribbon or rosette to each dog that receives a qualification toward a Coursing Ability title. Each ribbon or rosette shall be at least two inches wide and eight inches long and shall bear on its face a facsimile of the seal of The American Kennel Club, the words Coursing Ability Test Qualifying, and the name of the test-giving club. Ribbons or rosettes shall be orange in color. Section 12. Titles. Three titles will be awarded for dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test the required number of times. These are suffix titles that will appear on a dog s pedigree with a higher level title superseding a lower level title. Coursing Ability (CA) Awarded to a dog that passes the Coursing Ability Test three times under at least two different judges. Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) - Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test ten times. Coursing Ability Excellent (CAX) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 25 times. Coursing Ability Excellent 2 (CAX2) Dog passes the Coursing Ability Test 50 times. A higher numbered title will be awarded for every additional twenty five passes. Section 13. Submission of Results. All necessary forms for recording results will be downloadable from the AKC website. Event forms/booklets that are not easily downloadable can be requested by to the PE Department (Coursing@akc.org). In many cases clubs will have these forms/booklets as a result of holding lure coursing events.
