1 PAW PRINTS Humane Society of Jefferson County SUMMER 2013 INTRODUCING KRIS SPENCER Most anyone who has visited the shelter in the last several years has seen Kris Spencer. Now Kris is filling a new role and doing so very well. When the position of Shelter Manager became vacant Kris was willing and able to take it on. And she is doing a great job. She has put to use her organizational skills and has kept the facility running smoothly as she has assumed the role of manager. When we had an opportunity to send 30+ dogs into rescue on very short notice Kris and her staff managed to get them fully vetted and ready to go in a remarkably short time. Thank you Kris for stepping up and taking over the Shelter Manager s position so ably and quickly. Remember Our donation boxes support rescue!! 2 PAW PRINTS Page 2 HAPPY TAILS Posted to our facebook page: Back in the '90's a local news station ran a story on a dog with three legs named Buddy. I tried to find the video but their archives don't go back that far. Buddy was such an inspiration. He was a happy dog that did not know he had limitations. Because of that news story I have wanted my own three legged dog. A couple of weeks ago while we were at a festival I saw my three legged dog at a booth set up for the Humane Society of Jefferson County, TN. Everyone please say Hi to Trio, the newest member of our family. Panda is one lucky dog. A badly injured front leg as a very young pup required that she be taken to the veterinarian when found by Animal Control. Because of the severity of the injury the front leg was amputated. She thrived in foster care and when healed and adjusted to being on 3 legs she returned to the shelter to be adopted. Panda is very happy in her new home!! Meet Samson: What a difference a grooming makes. Almost unbelievable the amount of hair that came off this guy. Regular grooming is a must to keep a poodle looking and feeling his best. Hard to believe that this fellow is 11 years old. He doesn t look it or feel it and he has a great new home!! SPECIAL DOGS GET SPECIAL HOMES!! FROM JAN -DEC 2013 we took in 3000 unwanted animals
3 SPRING Page 3 TRIPS AND TRAVELING Top 10 Tips for Safe Car Travel With Your Pet For some pet parents, a trip's no fun if the four-legged members of the family can't come. But traveling can be highly stressful, both for you and your animal companions. With thoughtful preparation, you can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone. Planning a road trip? Traveling with a pet involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off especially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. The ASPCA offers the following tips to help you prepare for a safe and smooth car trip: 1. Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. There are a variety of wire mesh, hard plastic and soft-sided carriers available. Whatever you choose, make sure it's large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. And P.S., it's smart to get your pet used to the carrier in the comfort of your home before your trip. 2. Get your pet geared up for a long trip by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradually lengthening time spent in the car. And please be sure to always secure the crate so it won't slide or shift in the event of a quick stop. 3. Your pet's travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. Don't feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle even if it is a long drive. 4. Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death. 5. What in your pet's traveling kit? In addition to travel papers, food, bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and a pet first-aid kit, pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity. 6. Make sure your pet has a microchip for identification and wears a collar with a tag imprinted with your home address, as well as a temporary travel tag with your cell phone, destination phone number and any other relevant contact information. Canines should wear flat (never choke!) collars, please. 7. Don't allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window. He could be injured by flying objects. And please keep him in the back seat in his crate or with a harness attached to a seat buckle. 8. Traveling across state lines? Bring along your pet's rabies vaccination record, as some states requires this proof at certain interstate crossings. While this generally isn't a problem, it's always smart to be on the safe side. 9. When it comes to H2O, we say BYO. Opt for bottled water or tap water stored in plastic jugs. Drinking water from an area he's not used to could result in tummy upset for your pet. 10. If you travel frequently with your pet, you may want to invest in rubberized floor liners and waterproof seat covers, available at auto product retailers.
4 SPRING Page 4 IN MEMORY OF RICHARD WALLACE Richard Wallace a longtime supporter of the Humane Society will be long remembered. While he lived he frequently helped the shelter. After his passing he continues to help the shelter. The pictures that accompany this article show how his monetary gifts are being used. Six new secure kennels with roofs and new dog beds are just the beginning of his legacy. The dog beds are close to indestructible ( a necessity when used by bored dogs) and the kennels will replace chain link runs that were not strong enough for dogs determined to escape. We now have some kennels that we hope will contain even the most determined escape artist. Instead of chain link these kennels are heavy gauge welded wire. Not only are they attractive but they are strong. Some of our more determined visitors will be giving them a real test as to their toughness. you Richard for remember the Humane Society and making life a bit better for those animals in our care. New Kennels being assembled. These have metal anti-fight partitions. You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his fellow animals. Paul McCartney All of our dog kennels now have these great indestructible dog beds. A BIG Thank you to the businesses that advertised in this newsletter. It helps TO defray the cost of publication!
5 SPRING On the Road We are still on the road driving dogs as we continue with our rescue program. Thank you to our volunteer driver David for his February trip and being willing to drive on short notice. 32 dogs and pups are getting a new chance at adoption in an area where pups are not readily available. Thank you Taryn for your efforts and a big thank you to Amanda for getting the February transport on the road. And we can t forget Kris and the shelter staff for all they did to make sure the dogs/pups were healthy, vaccinated, health certified, clean and ready for new homes. One of the travelers Off to a great life! Parakeets, Cockatiels, and even a couple of Bourke s Parrots have been found new homes. And we can t forget Pigpen aka Piggy who was the perfect addition to a mini-farm. Very lucky fellow NOT JUST DOGS And CATS FOR ADOPTION Volunteer Opportunities Looking for a way to help out at the shelter? We can always use volunteers; particularly a handyman or handywoman. There are always more maintenance chores to be done than the staff has time to do. Whether it is balancing the blades on the ceiling fan, tightening electric sockets, weedeating around the cat area, repairing screens, fixing sheetrock or??? there are many jobs to be done. Consider donating your time if you are a handy person. Page 5 NEW Rescue Partner We are pleased to announce that we are partnering with Somerset Regional Animal Shelter in New Jersey. It is unfortunate that we often have more dogs and puppies available for adoption than there are homes in our community. Somerset Regional Animal Shelter has the opposite problem, more homes than dogs and puppies available for adoption. Because of this imbalance some of our guys are getting a second chance at being adopted and becoming northerners. From the smiling faces of the adopters and the kisses being given by the dogs our new partnership is working out great!!
