4 Seeing Stripes M AT H SKILL BUILDERS Jupiter Images King of the Jungle Tigers are the world s largest cats. There are six types of tigers in the world today. Bengal tigers are the most common, while Siberian tigers are the largest. Nearly half the world s tigers live in India. India is a country in South Asia. Tigers are also found in Russia, China, other countries in Asia, and in Africa. The tiger is the national animal of India. With its orange striped coat, the fearsome tiger is the King of the Jungle. Each tiger has its own pattern of dark stripes. Experts can even tell tigers apart by their stripes. Math Skill Builders Lesson 1
5 In the 1970s, there were tiger reserves, parks, and sanctuaries created to protect the tigers in India. Even so, there are fewer than 1,500 Bengal tigers in India today. India has the world s second-largest population. Growing cities are shrinking the areas where tigers live. Tigers are big and they like to hunt alone. They need plenty of room to roam. Fewer than 1,500 Bengal tigers live in India today. AP Images Tigers are also hunted by poachers. Poachers illegally hunt the cats for their coats. Officials in India are working to stop poachers. They are also trying to find better ways to protect the areas where the tigers live. When tigers are protected they often roar back. At Ranthambhore (RAN-tham-bore) National Park in India at least 10 Bengal tiger cubs have been born in the past two years. The hope is that these cubs will help India s tigers make a comeback. Better protection is increasing India s tiger population. AP Images Lesson 1 Math Skill Builders
6 Name Tigers aren t the only big cats. This chart shows how the tiger compares with other big cats from Asia and Africa. The Big Cats Big Cat Weight Length (pounds) (feet) Habitat 1 Tiger Africa, Asia 2 Lion Africa, Asia 3 Leopard Africa, Asia 4 Cheetah Africa Source: World Book Online Reference Center Fill in the circle next to the correct answer. 1. According to the chart, which cat weighs three hundred seventy-five pounds? A tiger B lion C leopard 3. How much longer is a lion than a cheetah? A 1 foot B 2 feet C 3 feet 2. Which cat weighs the most? A cheetah B leopard C tiger 4. Which cats weigh less than 200 pounds? Math Skill Builders Lesson 1 7
7 Solve each problem. 1. Twenty-seven tiger reserves, parks, and sanctuaries were created to protect the tigers in India. Is 27 odd or even? 2. Over the past three years, police have arrested more than 50 poachers in two tiger parks. What number is 10 more than 50? What number is 100 more than 50? 3. A tiger weighs 400 pounds. A jaguar weighs 100 pounds less than the tiger. How many pounds does the jaguar weigh? 4. Use the clues to find the weight of the tiger cub. The tens digit is 2. The ones digit is 7. The hundreds digit is 1. How much does the tiger cub weigh? 5. Tigers can live between 15 and 20 years. What are the even numbers between 15 and 20? Write Math! Use the information from the chart The Big Cats to write a word problem. Be sure to include the answer. 8 Lesson 1 Math Skill Builders
