1 Dear Pet Owner, Please read over this packet of information as it is designed to help you re-home your pet. You may be at a point where keeping your pet is no longer an option, we have included some common reasons for relinquishing animals, along with possible solutions that you may have not considered. Within this packet, you should find: icare Re-Homing Service Information The icare Re-Homing Service is a tool that pet owners can use while trying to find a responsible, new owner for their pet without having their pet ever enter a shelter. This service is for pets that are spayed/neutered and are up-to-date on their rabies vaccine. The Humane Society of Charlotte offers a Low-Cost Clinic. For more information, click here. If your pet does not qualify, please contact our Intake Coordinator at intakes@humanesocietyofcharlotte.org or ext 226. Adopter Information and Questionnaires We have provided questionnaires and a short application to guide you through the process of interviewing potential adopters. Pet-Friendly Housing in the Greater Charlotte Area We have compiled a list of most apartments in the Greater Charlotte area with their breed restrictions and fees. Please let us know if you know of other pet-friendly apartments that are not currently listed. Surrendering Your Pet If this is the only option, please fill out the owner surrender forms as completely and honestly as you can. If we are able to take in your pet, this information will help us make a good match for your pet.
2 icare Re-Homing Service The purpose of the icare Program is to provide alternatives to pet relinquishment. The Humane Society of Charlotte is a limited admissions shelter, which means we can only take in what we have room to house. We partner with Char-Meck Animal Care and Control to take in as many healthy and treatable animals as possible. If you plan on surrendering your animal to a shelter, please reconsider. The following are resources available to assist you with keeping or re-homing your pet. Re-homing Your Pet It is better for your pet if you are willing and able to re-home him/her without the stress of having to enter a shelter. Ask around to see if anyone you know is looking for a new pet. Use social media and the internet to make your pet more visible. Take advantage of the re-homing section on our website. Pet Behavior Help Pets can develop new behaviors that can be very difficult, from inappropriate urination to aggression. Without assistance, these behaviors can leave owners feeling helpless and without many options. Contact your veterinarian. Some behavior issues develop as a result of a medical condition, so it is important to be able to rule out all medical issues. Visit the ASPCA s website. They have two very helpful sites that are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week: o Pet Care information- o Virtual Pet Behaviorist- The Humane Society of Charlotte s SuperDog Club offers a five week training class to dogs that qualify for the icare Program for $50. We firmly believe that dogs can learn without the use of force, fear, pain or intimidation. We teach our human students a proactive approach to behavior modification. We use techniques that encourage a dog to choose the appropriate behavior for the situation at hand. For more information about the SuperDog Club, please click here. 3 icare Courtesy Page The Humane Society of Charlotte can help you find the right home though our virtual re-homing board. A requirement of the icare Program is that your pet be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on his/her rabies vaccine. This will make it easier for you to re-home your pet and helps with the overpopulation within Mecklenburg County. Write a short biography about your pet. This should include the reason why your pet needs a new home, the kind of home he or she would do well in, and some other interesting/quirky information about your pet for example, your pet s funniest behaviors, favorite thing to do, or the things you love most about your pet. Writing the story from the animal s perspective can make it more compelling. Make sure to list the most important characteristics about your pet. Remember to be honest. You want to make the best fit and have this be an easy transition for your pet. Take multiple pictures of your pet. These photos should be in color. It is best to have a close-up photo, one of their whole body, and a few other photos showcasing your pet. To get your pet s information on the icare Courtesy Re-Homing Board. Please submit the biography and pictures of your pet to our Intake Coordinator to intakes@humanesocietyofcharlotte.org. People who are interested in potentially adopting your pet will contact you directly to learn more about your pet. Pets will remain on the icare website for at least 90 days. Please contact the Intake Coordinator once your pet has been adopted. Please note that all pets must be spayed or neutered and have an up-to-date rabies vaccines to be listed on the site. Share your pet s listing. Share your pet s listing with friends, family, co-workers, etc. Post the link on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Advertise. Using the questionnaires and adopter information that was provided, place ads on Craigslist and in your local newspaper. To get more attention, advertise with photos of your pet. Make a re-homing poster. You can use the information that you shared about your pet to make a rehoming poster that can be placed throughout the community. You can share these at local veterinarian offices as well as other facilities.
4 Pet Friendly Housing in the Greater Charlotte Area We have compiled a list of pet friendly apartments in the Charlotte area. Please make sure to contact the rental agency as policies can change. Please us if you know of any other pet friendly housing in the Greater Charlotte area that is not listed. Owner Surrender Program The Humane Society of Charlotte is a limited admission shelter, which means we can only take in what we have room to house and that we do not euthanize for time or space. Please understand that the Humane Society of Charlotte is committed to each of our dogs or cats for life! Because of the quality of care administered to all of our homeless pets, we require a $50 surrender fee if your pet is accepted into our adoption program. This nominal fee does not come close to covering the significant cost of medically caring for, sheltering, and adopting out your pet. Please complete the surrender form and contact your veterinarian to obtain all updated medical information. Cat Surrender Form Dog Surrender Form Please submit the following information: The surrender form. Veterinary records providing up to date vaccination records as well as a current Rabies Certificate. Heartworm test results for dogs over 6 months of age. (If a dog is heartworm positive, the surrender fee will be $250 to cover the cost of the treatment). Negative test results for Feline Leukemia and FIV. A recent picture of your pet. Please note: We are willing to work around financial barriers, please make the Intake Coordinator aware of your situation. or fax all required information to: intakes@humanesocietyofcharlotte.org or Please note that all pictures should via with you and your pet s name in the subject line. Once received, we will review your application and contact you within 72 hours to let you know if a behavior and medical assessment will be scheduled.
5 Unfortunately, the Humane Society of Charlotte cannot accept dogs or cats with a history of aggression towards people and/or other animals or ringworm. Dogs and cats in declining health (kidney or liver failure, Parvovirus, canine or feline distemper, Feline Leukemia or FIV, et cetera) may also be declined.
