These coverings keep them warm and protect them from the weather. Animal coverings can also help them hide. All animals have body coverings, but not all of them are the same. Hair or Fur Some animals have hair or fur that protects them. The hair or fur can keep them warm in cold places. Bears have thick fur that keeps them warm during cold winters. Sometimes the animal s fur helps to keep them dry. Otters have fur that is shiny and dark, as well as being thick and warm. Water slides off the otter s fur to keep him dry. Sometimes the animal s fur protects it by keeping the animal from being seen. The leopard s fur blends in with the landscape so that it can more easily hunt for food. Squirrels are difficult to see on trees because they are the same color as the bark on trees. Feathers Birds are the only animals that are covered with feathers. Feathers help birds stay warm and dry. The feathers can also keep birds warm in winter and help them cool off in the summer. When it rains, water slides off birds feathers. This helps keep the bird dry. Not all feathers are alike. Some birds, such as hawks, have slim feathers that allow them to fly and dive fast. Others, like the owl, have soft feathers so that they can swoop soundlessly. Some birds, such as quail, have feathers that help them hide from predators. Scales Some animals have scales on the outside of their body. Fish are covered with scales that help them move through the water. Snakes also have scales. Their scales protect their bodies and also help them move. Armadillos are covered with thick scales called plates. When an armadillo is threatened, it rolls into a ball, because most enemies cannot break through these plates. Skin Some animals have only skin to cover their bodies. 5 moist all of the time. Toads have bumpy skin that produces a milky poison when it is threatened. Whales have thick skin that is lined with fat. This skin and layer of fat keeps them warm in cold, ocean waters. Elephants have thick, rough skin which helps protect them from predators. Your skin protects the inside of your body. It also keeps you warm when the weather is cold and helps cool your body when the weather is warm. Body coverings help animals. The types of body coverings are different, but they all serve the same purposes. They protect animals and help them survive. 7. Based on the selection, how does an otter use its fur? A. None of them trip. They move quickly. The slower ones get out of the way. The quicker ones are in the fast lanes. They are arranged perfectly. What happens if someone puts a finger in the middle of the ants? They can get back together quick as a wink. They go on as if nothing happened. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) likes the way ants work. They have a plan. They will use the way ants work to help airports run better. NASA is making computer programs. The programs show the best way a plane should fly. NASA also built in ways to fix problems. What if there is a storm where the plane is supposed to go? The program tells the plane to go another way. What if another plane is where the plane needs to go? The program tells the plane to go another way. This helps make flying quicker and safer. Air traffic controllers are people who tell pilots where to fly. They have to keep up with all the planes around an airport. It is hard to keep up with a lot of planes. NASA is working to make their jobs easier. Controllers use radar to track planes. NASA wants them to use satellites. Satellites show changes much faster. It takes 10 seconds for something to show on radar. The satellite shows it right away. The satellite sends information to a computer. Controllers will read the computer information. They will be able to keep planes away from each other better. They will be able to tell planes how to get around a storm safely, too. With radar, it takes time to decide where planes should go. Sometimes plane crews wait on the ground for directions. With the new program, planes will be able to fly while the crews are waiting for new information. This will save time. This program is doing one more thing to help. It can be used to build airports! The computer will draw a plan. The plan will show the best place for runways.
