Between the Bookends: Fireproof Moth: A Missionary in Taiwan s White Terror, by Milo Thornberry, is a true story (in which Mayflower residents Mark and Ginny Thelin played a bit part), but it reads like a suspense novel! It is a story kept secret by the many involved people for nearly 40 years until Taiwan changed from a tight dictatorship to a democracy. It tells how Peng Ming-min, the ciar of the Political Science Department at Taiwan s leading university, was arrested and imprisoned for 14 months for writing a Taiwanese declaration of independence, and how he later escaped from Taiwan when it seemed that he was likely to be surreptitiously killed by the government. You may find the first few chapters a bit slow, but the remainder will keep you on the edge of your seat constantly! The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party is another charming novel in the long series by Alexander McCall Smith about the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency in Botswana. Mma Ramotswe is more a problem-solver than a detective as she uses her intelligent understanding of people to bring about happy solutions to their problems. In this book she helps her husband s young assistant mechanic deal with the twins his old girlfriend has unexpectedly produced and works out a solution for a farmer whose cows are being mysteriously killed, all in time for everyone to enjoy her associate detective s wedding. Welcome new residents Karen & Gordon Packard, at Edwards 4 to the Mayflower Community

As I shared with the MRA (Mayflower Residents Association) Executive Council last Tuesday, Mayflower has made the commitment to expand our involvement in Home Services. As you know, we have been providing support to Mayflower residents in your homes daily checkins, medication set-ups, assistance with bathing, dry wound changing, TED hose application, and light housework. Because many people are choosing to stay in their homes, even as their health declines, we have made the commitment to expand Mayflower services to our residents and to other clients in the Grinnell area. This will include nursing as well as other support services. Mann Missive In order to staff this expanded initiative, Mayflower has hired Kellie McGriff, RN/BSN, Grinnell native and former Mayflower Director of Nursing and Mayflower Sales and Marketing Director ( ). Kellie has the ideal tools to provide Home Services: nursing and clinical skills, customer advocacy, Mayflower and senior living experience, and a caring attitude. Kellie completed her Registered Nurse (RN) educational requirements at Marshalltown Community College and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) at Grandview University, Des Moines. In addition, she is Wound/ Ostomy/Continence (WOC) certified by Minnesota State University. Kellie will begin her work on April 16 th. Her office will be located on the second floor of the Health Center, available by , Mayflower phone ( ), or cell phone. She will be contacting Mayflower residents soon to update your Mayflower medical information files. If you wish to talk with her prior to her connecting with you, give her a call or her at kmcgriff@mayflowerhomes.com. Bob Mann Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com) Remember Mayflower in your will Kellie McGriff, RN/BSN, Mayflower s New Director of Home Services

3 Between the Bookends continued: The Big Short, by Michael Lewis, explains what led to what in the developing financial crisis of Lewis, author of Moneyball and The Blind Side, manages to make the world of hedge funds and credit default swaps understandable and interesting by telling the unfolding story as seen through the eyes of individuals directly involved. Ridley Pearson s Killer Weekend is a suspense tale set in Sun Valley, Idaho, that beautiful playground and meeting place for powerful people. The suspense centers on a threat to the life of a political figure and the security nightmare facing those responsible for protecting her. Please help us keep our library shelves looking fresh and new. Donate your nearly new books with current titles and recent copyright dates to the Mayflower Browsing Library. Take your books, in April, to the book box in The Anchor. Thank you from the Browsing Library Committee. Jean Jones, Chairman Monday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. - MRA Town Meeting in Carman Center. All Mayflower residents are encouraged to attend. ALL CAMPUS NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25 IN THE CARMAN CENTER 3:30-4:30 P.M. The distinctive features of the statue and temple in ancient Greece and Rome and their influence on architecture and art over the centuries will be the topic of the next class in the Bucket Course series. Monessa Cummins, associate professor of classics at Grinnell College, will teach the four-session class titled Statue and Temple: Cultural Interaction in Ancient Greece and Rome. The class will meet on Wednesdays, April 11, 18 and 25 and May 2, at the Drake Community Library. Each class will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The sessions will analyze the elements of the male statue and the temple in ancient Greek and Roman culture. Emphasis will be placed on how the Greeks and Romans borrowed both technology and artistic expression from other cultures and yet created statues and temples unique to themselves. The Bucket Courses are open to everyone in the community. Because of space limitations, registration is limited to 90. Advance registration can be done online with Jim Ahrens at ja.ahrens@hotmail.com, at the Drake Community Library, or at the desk at Pearson Hall at the Mayflower Community. The fee for Cummins course is $15, payable at the first class. Registrants are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 a.m. on that day For more information, contact Joanne Bunge at or jbunge@mayflowermail.net

Lunchtime Grace in the Buckley Dining Room In a long-time Mayflower Community tradition, grace has been asked at lunch in the Buckley Dining Room. We view ourselves as a ministry in service to others, so this tradition has been meaningful to many residents. Recently, the meal prayer was suspended while we considered its appropriateness in the various settings that we do lunch in the Dining Room. Grace has now been reinstituted. To avoid its being imposed on diners who choose to not take part in it, the grace will be asked (coordinated by the Buckley Dining Room Host) at 11:40am and will be announced with the ringing of the bell. This new structure will still allow diners to visit the salad bar anytime after 11:30 a.m., providing early arrivers an opportunity to be seated with their salad prior to grace. The salad bar will remain open and full until 12:15 p.m. The meal entree will continue to be served at 12:00 noon. Scott Gruhn & Bob Mann

The Taize community is devoted to prayer, contemplation and living in reconciliation within the church and the world. Members of the community gather together three times a day, seven days a week, throughout the year to pray. During Taize worship, people come to quiet their hearts before God. The characteristics of Taize worship include repetition of prayers, simple musical lines and core Biblical texts interspersed with periods of silence, both short and long. Some Taize-style music has been used on Saturdays and Sundays at St. John s.
