4-H Small Animal Project Introduction Raising and caring for small animal pets can be lots of fun and also educational. There are many different kinds of small animals that make excellent pets. You should make a study of several small animals, their living habits, and what s involved in raising and caring for them before you select one as your pet. The information contained in this manual is general, and you may wish to learn more. There are many books in the library or pet store that will give you more detailed information. Also, you may wish to obtain information from other people who raise small animals or your veterinarian. If you get a pet of any kind and decide you do not want it, take it to an animal shelter for adoption or have a veterinarian humanely destroy it. Never turn loose unwanted pets to suffer or to annoy others. You can buy pets from breeders, dealers, pet shops, or private owners. To be sure your pet is healthy, have it examined by a veterinarian. You should have an agreement with the seller that you can return the animal if it is unhealthy. Ask a veterinarian or animal nutritionist to advise you on what foods will best give your pet a balanced diet. Carefully follow their recommendations. Gerbils Gerbils are small brown rodents that originate in the desert regions of Asia. The underside of the body is white and their tail is very long. They require little care and make good pets. Your pet gerbil should be easy to tame. These little animals have a natural curiosity, a gentle disposition, and no fear of people. When you lift your gerbil, slide your fingers under his body and hold him firmly in both hands so that he cannot jump out. If necessary, you may lift him by the base of the tail. Never lift him by the end of his tail. Keep your gerbil in a wooden, metal, or wire cage, or a glass aquarium. The cage should be 14 or more inches square and about deep. Be sure to put the cage in a part

of the house that is free of drafts. If your cage is in direct sunlight, provide your gerbil with some shade. Wood shavings or another absorbent material should be used on the cage floor as bedding. Change the bedding and clean the cage once a week. Keep food and water available at all times. Your gerbil will eat the same kind of food that is eaten by mice, hamsters, or guinea pigs. They like commercial pellets, grain, cereals, and fresh fruit or vegetables. A water bottle that attaches to the side of the cage, is the easiest, most sanitary way to keep fresh water available. If you wish to raise young gerbils, you can keep a male and a female in the same cage. They mate for life and should be left together at all times. Gerbils mature at about 3 months of age, and the first litter usually arrives when the female is about 6 months old. The gestation period for gerbils is about 24 days. No special care is required for the mother and young if plenty of bedding is supplied. Young gerbils are very delicate and usually some of the litter die before they are weaned. A pair of gerbils will mate again soon after the litter is born. Hamsters Hamsters are rodents about 6 inches long. These little animals make active, playful pets and are easy to keep. Their coat is reddish gold with white on the underside of the body. Hamsters are easily tamed, but need to be handled frequently to keep them tame. Handle your hamster gently until he learns to trust you. Soon you will be able to lift him easily and handle him whenever you wish. He will climb over your arms and shoulders, and even ride in your pocket. Keep your hamster in a cage indoors and out of drafts. He will require feed and water equipment similar to that needed for gerbils. Hamsters should have an exercise wheel in their cage. Hamsters eat a commercial pellet, similar to that used for guinea pigs.

Mice White mice are small rodents with long, slender tails. They require little care and make good pets. Equipment and the cage needed is the same as that listed for gerbils. Keep food and water available at all times. You can buy food from pet supply stores. In addition, you may give your mouse cabbage, lettuce, oats, or wheat, sunflower seed, or bran to supplement his diet. If you wish to raise young mice, you can keep a male and a female in the same cage until they are bred. When the female becomes pregnant, put her in a separate cage with plenty of bedding. The gestation period for mice is about 3 weeks. Clean the cage once a week or more often if the bedding becomes soiled. Wild Animals Wild animals should not be captured and kept as pets. A few of the familiar ones are squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, moles, rats, mice, groundhogs, deer, coyotes, bobcats, or opossum. They are difficult to tame and often never become tame enough to domesticate. Birds Birds can adapt to almost any household. They are clean, easy to care for, and cost little to keep. Decide on the breed of bird you want, and then select the proper cage. The following types of birds make good pets: Canaries- They are a type of small, yellow finch. They are noted for their singing ability, but only the male will sing. Average lifespan is 7-8 years. Finches- They are active, flighty little birds with feathers of many bright colors. Finches like company and you can keep several in the same cage. Average lifespan is 4-5 years.

Parakeets- Their feathers usually are green, blue, yellow, or white. Once your parakeet is tamed to sit on your finger, you can teach him to talk. Average lifespan is years. Cockatiels- They are affectionate birds that can be taught to talk and whistle. The most common colors are white and gray. Average lifespan is 25 years. Parrots- They are brightly colored birds that make entertaining pets. You can teach them to talk, laugh, cry, and whistle. There are many sizes of parrots. Average lifespan is years. Doves- They are best kept outside. They are fed pigeon pellets or seed. Care of Birds Purchase your bird from a reputable pet store or breeder. Look for bright eyes, alertness, and the cleanliness of the cage. Do not buy a bird that has ruffled feathers or diarrhea. Ask for a guarantee on the bird, usually 48 hours. Ask about the proper feeding of your breed of bird. Keep food and water available at all times. Check the food daily to be sure that the container has seed in it- not just empty husks. Change the drinking water every day. Clean the bottom cage paper every day. Ferrets Ferrets are an animal that resembles the mink or weasel. The most common colors are sable and albino (white). Ferrets should be kept in a cage unless under supervision. They eat cat food and like to sleep in a box with a blanket. The ferret can be trained to use a litter pan just like a cat. Males develop a strong odor when mature, but neutering will help to keep their smell to a minimum. Females don t smell as much as males do, but if you are not planning to breed your female ferret, it is best for her health if she is spayed. Ferrets are friendly animals and they make good pets. Most ferrets never outgrow their playful nature.

Reptiles The reptile group includes: 1. Snakes 2. Turtles 3. Lizards Learn the habitat of your reptile and try to duplicate it.

Small Animals Project Requirements 1. Read and study the Project Manual. Other materials are available from pet shops and libraries. 2. Select one or two species of animal. You should select and care for the small animal for at least 12 weeks. Any animals discussed in this manual may be selected. Any other animal must be approved. Those animals used for hunting wild animals and those requiring a license to be kept in captivity, are not to be used for this project. You may enter two animals, but each must be from a different group. Each animal must also have a separate notebook. 3. Your 4-H Fair exhibit will be a notebook and your small animal. Only the notebook will be judged. The notebook will show what you have learned, and will provide the viewers with educational information concerning small animals. Examples of subjects might include: care, feeding, selection, housing, or a combination of these subjects. Your notebook should include: a. A photograph of your pet b. Length of time you cared for your small pet c. Cost of your project 4. You may take the project each year by adding a different topic to your notebook or you may start with a new species every year. 5. If your small animal should die after you have begun the project, you may complete by finishing your notebook and exhibiting it. Please note in your notebook that you no longer have your pet or when you replaced it.
