3 Determining Senior Status The popular rule thumb is that each year a pet s age equals seven human years. Realistically, however, the scale is not that simple, even within species. For cats and small dogs, for example, a two-year-old is roughly equal to a human 24-year-old. In giant breeds, the relative age varies. For example, a St. Bernard might be considered senior after age five and geriatric after age eight. In general, the senior years a pet can be divided into three categories: Pet s Actual Age MATURE The middle lifespan to the last 25% Relative Age Pet in Human Years 0-20 Pounds Pounds Pounds 1 year 7 years 7 years 7 years - Over 90 Pounds 2 years 14 years 16 years 18 years 20 years 3 years 28 years 30 years 32 years 34 years 4 years 32 years 34 years 36 years 38 years 5 years 36 years 37 years 40 years 42 years 6 years 40 years 42 years 45 years 49 years 7 years 44 years 47 years 50 years 56 years 8 years 48 years 51 years 55 years 64 years 9 years 52 years 56 years 61 years 71 years 10 years 56 years 60 years 66 years 78 years 11 years 60 years 65 years 72 years 86 years 12 years 64 years 69 years 77 years 96 years 13 years 68 years 74 years 82 years 101 years 14 years 72 years 78 years 88 years 108 years 15 years 76 years 83 years 93 years 115 years 16 years 80 years 87 years 99 years 123 years 17 years 84 years 92 years 104 years - 18 years 88 years 96 years 109 years - 19 years 92 years 101 years 115 years - 20 years 96 years 105 years 120 years - Cats are considered SENIOR The last 25% lifespan Senior at years age Geriatric at 15+ years age GERIATRIC At life expectancy and beyond According to experts, senior pets make up more than a quarter the United 45 States pet population. At MILLION least 28% the nation s SENIOR PETS dogs and more than 25% its cats are at least eight years old. That adds up to more than 45 million senior pets in the U.S % Common Senior Pet Problems Only about 14% those senior animals receive the regular health exams recommended by their veterinarians. 2 By the time many owners bring their pets to a veterinarian, the pet is already sick. This is especially true for cats, which tend to hide their physical discomfort. The best way to ensure your aging pet s comfort and health is through regular veterinary exams. As your senior pet ages, you may notice certain symptoms that can indicate a health problem that requires veterinary care. Here are some common signs urinary, inflammation, joint, and digestive problems in aging pets. Incontinence One the most frustrating signs distress in a senior dog is peeing in an inappropriate place. But the cause may be urinary incontinence, a treatable condition. Common signs include: Dripping or leaking urine Excessive licking the genital area Red and irritated skin around the genital area Needing to go more frequently than usual Wetting the bed or sleeping area Urinating inappropriately in the house Bladder Stones Urinary crystals and bladder stones are common in senior dogs and cats. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) UTIs can be a source ongoing discomfort for pets and challenges for owners. References: 1. Boulard G. Grow Old with Me. You may see swelling and redness, or find painful spots on the skin. Your main concern is to make sure your pet is comfortable and not in pain. Digestive issues Senior pets may have digestive issues caused by the body s inability to absorb nutrients. Symptoms may include excess shedding, gas, lack energy even eating stool. You may notice a change in their eating habits, as well.
