He roared a great big roar to tell all of the other animals know that he was awake. You see, the lion was the king of all the animals. Oh my, said the lioness. You have morning breath! The lion roared in anger. I am the king! I am perfect! As he walked through he met a donkey. Tell me true, do I have morning breath? he roared into the donkey s face. Whew! said the donkey. Indeed, you do. The lion was insulted and immediately killed the donkey. As the lion went across the jungle he met a leopard and asked him the same question. Knowing that the lion had just killed the donkey because of his answer, the leopard replied, Oh great sir, your breath is as sweet as the morning dew. Your breath is as delightful as the finest flower. Your breath is finer than the finest perfume. Again, the lion roared in anger. You are making fun of me, the mighty king! So, he killed the leopard too. The fox had seen everything that happened. The lion turned to him and asked, Fox, do I have morning breath? The fox took a deep breath and replied, Oh mighty king, I am sorry, you see, I have a cold. I cannot smell anything right now. They looked quite old, but they were no taller than Dorothy. Men were dressed in blue clothes. The woman was dressed in white. They all had pointed hats on their heads. When they saw Dorothy, they whispered to one another. They looked frightened. The little old woman walked up to Dorothy and bowed. Welcome to the land of Munchkins, most wonderful Witch, she said. These people want to thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. You have set them free. Dorothy was surprised. You are very kind, but there must be some mistake, she said. I am not a witch. I have not killed anyone They started to walk back along the river bank, towards the yellow-brick road. Soon they came to the place where the Scarecrow had left them. He was still there, holding on to his pole in the middle of the water. A big white bird a stork was standing by the river bank looking at him. If he wasn t so big, I would get him for you, the stork said. He isn t heavy, said Dorothy, who was quite surprised to hear a bird talk. He is stuffed with straw. He weighs very little. The stork said she would try. She flew over the water until she reached the Scarecrow. She took hold of his arm. She lifted him up easily. She carried him through the air and back to the river bank. When the Scarecrow returned to his friends, he was so happy. He hugged Dorothy and the Tin Woodman. He even hugged the Lion and Toto. Dorothy thanked the kind stork for helping them. Q.1.
