2 Mann Missive Mayflower Residents Have Done It Again! Released a week ago, the Fall, 2013 edition of The Mayflower Log, is another piece of enjoyable reading and quality journalism. Our Mayflower Residents Association is fortunate to enjoy the leadership of Editor, Harley Henry, and the technical contributions of Layout Editor/Photographer, Selva Lehman, and writers, Sue Chasins, Alice Breemer, and Jan Peak. Thank you for this contribution and your on-going supply of information about The Mayflower Community. I especially appreciated the new feature, Familiar Faces, interviews with four longtime residents. There is much to learn from their recollections of our past and their wise perspectives. Since I contribute nothing to The Log effort, it is important to note that my first notice of the content of each edition is the same as yours when we read the published copy. Therefore, I want to clarify one item in print in the Fall, 2013 edition. In one of the articles, I was credited for founding the Listening Group, a valuable source of two-way communication on this campus. Actually, it was resident Jean Libbey who conceived and started the gathering of a handful of residents and some staff leaders to gather and deal with residents concerns. And, it is now Art Heimann, who dutifully assembles the team, processes their concerns, and reports back to those concerned and to me. Thank you, Jean and Art. (Note: Published copies of The Log, are available on our Mayflower website: Reflections: Ships and Waves. Recently, a task force of professionals working with Mayflower senior staff created a new logo for the Watertower Square project which we are exploring. In the process, we talked about the current Mayflower logo, an old-time sailing ship atop a scripted M, with one leg made to look like an ocean wave. Really? In Iowa? Well, the ship represents our ancestry, the Congregational Church escapees from European persecution. I have to admit I have been somewhat calloused about this symbol, this history. But, two recent celebration-of-life events have been sobering for me. First, earlier in the fall, Joyce Hertz s power-packed 68 years were celebrated in the Ames United Church of Christ. She did not get to finish what was a valuable partial-term contribution as a Mayflower Community Trustee. Her pastor likend her life and her contributions to those hardy Pilgrims, who took on social injustices with a drive for freedom and a desire to give back to others in need. Then, 10 days ago, the Grinnell United Church of Christ Congregational hosted a celebration-of-life for long-time Mayflower resident, Alice Renaud, 95, who helped turn the first shovel of dirt for Mayflower in She spent her entire life giving gifts to others her family, her church, and her communities of Grinnell and Iowa. When son Paul sang, What a Wonderful Life, in tribute to his mother, I was again reminded of that ship carrying folks to a future of opportunity and fulfillment. This is The Mayflower Community. Thank you, Joyce, Alice, and all of you who embrace that old ship. Bob Mann Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com)

Bring photos, documents, letters, journals, stories, diaries, scrapbooks, etc., and the volunteers will scan them into their computer and give you a copy (no charge)! Visit the PHPP page on-line for more information: Questions to help you think of items to bring: Where did you shop? Did you know anyone treated at Grinnell Community Hospital? What life events took you to Montezuma? Did you ever swim or boat at Arbor Lake? Where were you during the 1978 tornado? Did you travel by train? Did you attend a one-room school? Did you attend a performance at the Brooklyn Opera House? What are your high school memories? What role did church play in your life?
