The United States was built on God s laws. Objectives Read these objectives. They will tell what you will be able to do when you have finished this LIFEPAC. 1. I can tell the name of my country. 2. 4 I LOVE MY COUNTRY Unit 8 1. HOW AMERICA WAS DISCOVERED For a long time, only Indians lived in our country. Then other men came across the ocean. They sailed in small ships. These men found a new land. More and more people came to live in this new land. 2 Section 1

6 I LOVE MY COUNTRY Unit 8 Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus lived long ago. He was a very brave man. He sailed across the ocean with three small ships. His ships were called the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. 4 Section 1
7 Unit 8 I LOVE MY COUNTRY Columbus found a new land. He had discovered America. He met the people who lived in the new land. Columbus called them Indians. The Indians were the first Americans. _ Write the answer Columbus found a new. ( land / ocean ) He sailed with ships. ( two / three ) The were the first Americans. ( sailors / Indians ) Section 1 5
8 I LOVE MY COUNTRY Unit 8 The Pilgrims More people came to the new land. They were called Pilgrims. The Pilgrims loved God. In their own country they could not worship God in their own way. They wanted to be free to worship God. One hundred (100) Pilgrims came to America in a very small ship. The ship was called the Mayflower. The Pilgrims named their town Plymouth. The Pilgrims friend, Squanto, showed them how to plant corn and other food. 6 Section 1
