Between the Bookends: Land of Ghosts by David Campbell will give you a vivid description of a Brazillian rain forest. While restoring a Caravaggio painting in the Vatican, Allon encounters a network of antiquity smugglers and terrorists This novel contains wonderful descriptions of Rome, Vienna, and Jerusalem and is very exciting.

2 Resident Healthcare Services. We are surely an active community! Besides all the holiday activity, the most important events taking place in the last month or so at Mayflower have to do with illness and other health episodes. And, the majority of those have been caused by flu. Fortunately, we have not had to deal with any quarantines in our healthcare areas during this period. Other local healthcare facilities have been quarantined. We have had some cases of flu influenza, but our staff has successfully isolated them to just the infected person. In addition, all of those people have recovered as of now. An additional highlight is that, as the result of 100% of our employees having received the flu vaccine, we have had very little incidence of missed work due to sickness. The very best news is that this Mayflower thing is working! Fourteen independent living Mayflower residents (apartment or Harwich Terrace homes) have needed some special care for illness or health episodes during the last month. They received services via our Code Alert system, our campus nurses, our Home Services staff, and short-term stays in our Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living. That includes nurse accompaniment on trips to the Emergency Room, family practice doctors, other specialists, and pharmacies. Especially important has been communications and coordination with out-of-town family members by our professional staff. It IS working! New Resident. Norma Kaisand, sister of resident Don Pederson, has moved from her Grinnell home to apartment #318 in the Buckley building. As the Mann Missive result of recent resident moves and pending internal transitions, we will soon have available a couple of larger Mayflower independent living apartments. Mayflower Residents Association Mini- Gift Shop. Located in the lower level of the Pearson building, this is an eclectic retail operation (in other words, procure free and sell at low prices!). Open two hours a day, six days a week, the shop is operated by our Mayflower Residents Association (MRA) for the benefit of residents, families, employees, and community friends. This year, the Mini-Gift Shop Committee will be proposing to the January MRA Town Meeting that $5,400 in 2012 proceeds be gifted to the Mayflower Human Needs Endowment Fund and to the Mayflower Food Service Software project. That will mean that more than $160,000 will have been donated to causes that benefit Mayflower residents during the Shop s 37 years of operation! Residents helping residents! Somehow, that seems to be ingrained in our culture. It just keeps happening. Proposed Altemeier Pet Policy. Thank you for your written comments submitted in response to the possibility of allowing dog and cat pets to live with residents in one of our resident independent living apartment buildings. 6 GRMC Limits Visitors to Prevent Spread of Widespread Viruses Grinnell Regional Medical Center is asking for help in the effort to protect patients from multiple widespread viruses: If you are sick, please don t come for a visit. Effective immediately, GRMC is asking visitors for their help in protecting patients and staff by not coming to the hospital with a sore throat, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever. This includes those who are visiting inpatient and obstetrical areas. These limits on hospital visitors will help us protect our most vulnerable population from exposure to multiple, severe viruses, says Terri Kelling, RN, GRMC infection prevention coordinator. This is important for GRMC s commitment to patient safety. If you feel unwell, please don t come to the hospital unless you are coming for medical treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the influenza outbreak in 2013 could be the worst in 10 years, and that seems to be bearing true locally. Influenza-associated hospitalizations have significantly increased in the State of Iowa in the past week. Outpatient visits have increased as well. Influenza-like illness is widespread in Poweshiek County and the State of Iowa right now, says Patty Hinrichs, coordinator of Grinnell Regional Public Health. A norovirus also seems to be very widespread at this time. Outbreaks of norovirus are very common right now, says Patricia Quinlisk, MD, MPH, Iowa State Epidemiologist. Most of the time, if there is diarrhea involved, it is norovirus. When we see outbreaks in schools, it s usually influenza and norovirus. Norovirus is present year-round, but we seem to see it more frequently in the winter. Hand sanitizer is not effective on norovirus, Kelling says. Only good, old-fashioned soap and water can kill a norovirus.
