Senior Care 04 Cats are not small 6 dogs, says Dottie Laflamme, DVM, PhD, DACVN. New evidence is teaching us more about the unique characteristics of cats and ways to enhance their health. One area of focus is nutrient absorption in senior cats. There s a population of older cats that doesn t absorb fat well and tends to lose weight very easily, says Gail Czarnecki-Maulden, PhD. We have ongoing research that looks at matching nutrients to age to help cats maximize nutrient absorption and improve health status. Protein Delivers Deborah Greco, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, believes in the power of protein to optimize a cat s diet. Protein levels should be as high as possible Dual Fiber in feline diets, says Control Greco. As obligate 0 carnivores, cats require more protein Probiotic than dogs. Protein also helps optimize metabolism, so cats have less tendency Microflora to gain weight. It s been shown in Purina studies that increasing protein in weight management diets has a muscle-sparing effect. Increased dietary protein helps preserve lean body mass, and not just during weight loss, agrees Laflamme. There s evidence in nearly 0 9 High Protien Diet Patient s GI Condition Fatty Acids Peak TIME (HOURS) all species that lean body 56 mass is lost with age, which is a risk factor for late-life morbidity and 04 mortality. Anything we can do to help preserve 6 lean body mass is going to help cats achieve long, healthy lives. Probiotics for Balance The role of probiotics in health is emerging, as well as the role of microflora in the intestinal tract and the effect on overall health, says Czarnecki-Maulden. Particularly when an animal is stressed and it doesn t take much for cats bad bacteria can overtake the good bacteria. High Protien Diet We re learning more about how bacteria support proper immune function, and how they send signals to other parts of the body. The changing landscape of feline health and nutrition presents you with many opportunities to provide client counsel. Laflamme Level advises veterinary professionals 5 to enhance their nutrition Patient s GI 5 6 knowledge Condition 80 through 65 continuing 79 TIME (HOURS) education using trusted sources. 56 Providing nutritional 04 advice is a great 6 opportunity for veterinary practices. Build it into extended office visits or in separate consultations, she says. Find out where cat owners are getting their information and the concerns they have, then provide informed responses. Highly Digestible Ingredients Corn and other grains are commonly used in dry pet foods, primarily as sources of digestible carbohydrates, but also as sources of essential fatty acids. Carbohydrates from corn are used to provide energy and to help supply the body s glucose needs. While the protein content of corn is low, protein from corn can be found in higher amounts in corn gluten meal. Corn gluten meal is a highly digestible source of many essential amino acids. There are numerous myths about corn in pet food. One suggests that corn is hyperallergenic, contributing to food allergies. Allergies can form against almost any protein, including the protein in corn. However, even though corn is widely used in commercial pet foods, allergies to corn are unusual, based on the most common food allergens identified in dogs and cats during clinical evaluations. Thus, the evidence refutes this myth about corn. Another common myth is that corn is a filler in pet foods. Fillers are defined as non-nutritive substances used to extend food volume. Since corn is highly nutritious, providing highly digestible carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and amino acids, corn does not qualify as a filler.
3 NUTRITION UPDATES AT CONFERENCE Get up-to-date information on how to handle challenging cases during the Nestlé Purina Symposium at the Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, p.m., Feb. 6. The 00 symposium, Critical Updates on Canine and Feline Health, will feature: Wait, Wait, Don t Tell Me Controversial and Challenging Feline Cases, Deborah Greco, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, Nestlé Purina Feline IBD: The Good (Diets), the Bad (Bacteria) and the Ugly (Diagnosis), Debora Zoran, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, Texas A&M University Treatment of Liver Disease: Medical and Nutritional Aspects, David Twedt, DVM, DACVIM, Colorado State University PRACTICE TIPS Encouraging Repeat Product Sales Tips on boosting repeat sales* 9% Verbal reminders during appointment/checkout 64% In-clinic signage 4% Postcard mailings 6% Collateral 8% Client s *Average of fall 009 survey responses From Problem to Success: A Weight Loss Program That Works and Grows Relationships, Not Girth, Margie Scherk, DVM, DABVP (feline), Cats Only Veterinary Clinic, British Columbia Visit the Nestlé Purina booth during WVC and receive a free gift for attending in-booth presentations or taking the Purina Veterinary Diets Challenge. Encourage Trial We provide samples so our clients can try out a product for five to seven days before they make a purchase. Tony Myer, DVM, Forest Villa Animal Clinic, Dallas, Texas Display Products Our inventory counter is prominently located, so clients walk by it on the way to the exam room. Dale Cupp, DVM, Cabin Point Veterinary Hospital, Disputanta, Virginia CASE STUDY CORNER Appetite Assistance Even the healthiest cats can be finicky eaters. When cats are ill, they may simply quit eating. While Purina Veterinary Diets FortiFlora Feline Nutritional Supplement is primarily used for the dietary management of diarrhea and promoting gastrointestinal and immune system health, it can also be an effective palatability enhancer. Jennifer Ponce Veterinary Technician Studio City, California Ponce has enticed sick cats to eat by sprinkling FortiFlora on food. We keep FortiFlora on hand at all times to use during feedings, says Ponce. We also send it home with patients if they re on antibiotics. Ponce says the inviting qualities of FortiFlora are immediate. The cats definitely like the flavor of FortiFlora, and we ve had really good success, she says. Word got around the hospital, so now we put it on nearly every hospitalized patient s food. Ponce recommends trying FortiFlora with cats that have not responded to cyproheptadine as an appetite stimulant. Managing product inventory and encouraging repeat sales help bolster clinic profitability. In a recent issue of Nutrition@work, we asked readers what s working in their clinics. They shared these tips on methods used to boost sales: Restock Regularly We order weekly, so we always have the right amount of product on hand. Josie Thompson, DVM, Civic Feline Clinic, Walnut Creek, California Make It Personal Our receptionist makes note of when customers last purchased a particular product and reminds them when it s time to replenish. Customers appreciate the attention to detail, and three out of five will make a purchase. LM Bogoslavsky, DVM, Animal Hospital & Clinic of Sherwood, Sherwood, Arkansas Educate Clients Be sure to use focused communication to educate clients from entrance to exit. Brian Jenkins, DVM, Aloha Animal Hospital, Hanover, Pennsylvania Know Your Customers Keep a list of pets on special diets, then order enough to cover them plus a bit more for new patients. That way you have just enough. Cathy Schultz, DVM, Ambassador Animal Hospital, Fayetteville, North Carolina And the winner is Margaret Warner, DVM, Waterhouse Animal Hospital, Fresno, California, was randomly selected from the readers who responded to our survey. She will receive a set of Purina Clinical Handbooks, valued at $400. Return this issue s survey to be eligible for an upcoming drawing.
