Between the Bookends: New York Times Best Seller author John Lutz has written more than 40 novels. Rated one of the Masters and one of the best. This fast paced 2013 release is one of many to keep his reputation building. Twist is a story of Frank Quinn, a decorated ex-cop who specialized as a NYPD detective in tracking serial killers, who now faces a personal challenge like no other. His own niece Carie is being stalked by a man who has already terrorized a number of women. Quinn has to set the perfect trap and what it needs is the perfect bait. You won t put this driving mystery down until you reach the thrilling conclusion. Jhumpa Lahiri s novel, The Lowland, is both broad and specific. Lahiri describes the rebellion in the early 1970 s of Indian s youth against the government, comparing it to the similar movement in the United States at that same period. We see violent protests through the experience of an Indian family one son is a passionate anarchist; the other is eager to avoid conflict. The parents suffer with and because of both their children, and the reader learns and empathizes as this moving story unfolds. 2 Mann Missive Watertower Square Tours. A series of tours of the new Watertower Square residences building, 625 Broad Street, is being arranged. Within the week, our governing boards the Trustees and the Foundation Directors-will have walked the partially-finished building. On August 21 st, the committed Watertower Square residents will get a first look. Then on August 24 th, we will host a visit for invited Friends of Watertower Square, including City leaders, West Broad Investors, Grinnell State Bank, Ramsey-Weeks, Inc., and Grinnell College. When the work is nearly completed, mid- to late- September, tours will be available to current Mayflower residents and staff members. These last two groups will be delayed until hard hats are no longer required and the elevator is functional. Bunking Up at Mayflower. A number of future residents have now sold their homes and given possession in anticipation of their move to Watertower Square residences. Where do they live in the interim? Four couples are now living temporarily on our campus Harry and Joanne Bolton (B-301), Gene and Kathy Herman (E-1), Leo and Barb Lease (A-203), and Chris and Judy Hunter (532 State Street). In addition, we are making space for at least one more couple and possibly others. In addition, other Watertower Square future residents have sold homes and made other shortterm arrangements. We anticipate the first of Watertower Square move-ins to be completed by early October, possibly earlier. One more short-term stay is about to occur. Miriam Baumann will have the privilege of hosting her daughter Julie and two children in her Harwich Terrace home for a short stay as they complete their Grinnell move from Madison WI. Great Courses A Great Success. The second feature-length DVD movie from The Other Side of History series that is being shared by resident, Dorothy Breuning, was shown in the Kiesel Theatre last Friday night. Many life-long learners attended, but there were empty seats. The quality of the movies is outstanding. If you have interest in this history series, consider signing up in the Pearson office for the next showing Being Egyptian; Friday; 7:00pm. Chuck Wagon Vittles. Our Food Service staff hosted another outstanding dining event last night in the Beebe Circle and Buckley Courtyard a cooking demonstration and tasting and a full western barbeque supper. Of course, this comes on the heels of the as-always outstanding Luau in mid-july. Aren t we fortunate to live at Mayflower?! I ll Be Me (Glen Campbell s Last Concert Tour). Get ready for a touching chronicle of the last performances of country-singer great, Glen Campbell, as he does a national and international tour after receiving an Alzheimer s diagnosis. Powerful movie. Anne Sunday, Mayflower s Independent Living Activities Coordinator, is making arrangements for a showing in the Kiesel Theatre. We anticipate limited seating, so watch for the sign-up in the Pearson lobby. Tickets will be available starting on August 21 at no cost to you. Note: Our Harwich Terrace residents at 702 Broad Street are Leo Landkamer and Joan Brand- Landkamer (husband and wife). Be sure to use Brand- if you are writing something that includes Joan s last name. 3 Mayflower Watertower Square Sidewalk Reporter with Jim Ahrens Work progresses, mostly on the inside, but, one can see where they are working on the outside. The siding is going on at a steady pace and the workers are creating the floors for the overhangs and balconies. Our pictures this time will show various details in which the new (and current) residents 102 may be interested. 103 Photo #102 shows the receiving end of a light tunnel which adds light to dark rooms and closets where practicable. Photo #103 shows the storage cages 104 in the garage area. Photo #104 shows the main switch panel on that level, which is an essential in a modern building. 106 Photo #105 shows garage parking spaces and some of the drain runs from above. Photo #106 shows drywalling in progress and the utilities enclosures necessary for finished apartment space. Photo #109 shows HVAC and sprinkler runs, these are where your heating and cooling and fire 105 safety come from. Photo #110 shows an installer working in the elevator shaft installing equipment for another essential item. They say pictures are worth a thousand words, and these are, I must say. We are off for a bit of camping and Gerry is due back from his trip soon to collect some more photos for the next time we create this column. 6 WASTE MANAGEMENT I have been asked What are you guys going to do with the garbage at Watertower Square? Well, here s the answer for now. The building has two chutes that run through all 3 floors to the parking garage. We will have large plastic bins at the bottom of the chutes to collect garbage in one and recyclables in the other. The variable right now is that we can t mix cardboard with the other recyclables. We may ask residents to take cardboard to a bin in the parking garage or we (Facilities) may pick it up from each floor. Either way, the collection and disposal of waste will be up to the Facilities Staff to take care of on a daily basis since the City garbage truck won t fit under the building. We depend on donations so, if you have things you now find you don t need, this is the place to donate them and add to the shop s gifts to all of us. Most of the profit goes to the Human Needs Endowment Fund which helps residents in need. The earnings also support various Mayflower projects or programs as suggested by Residents. The Mini Gift Shop is located in the Lower Level of Pearson at 616 Broad Street and it is open from 9:30 to 11:30 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays. PICTORIAL DIRECTORY We are starting to plan for the 2015 Pictorial Directory that will be ready later this fall after all new Residents in the Watertower have arrived. Since we took new photos in 2014 and new Residents get their photos taken when they arrive most of the photos are current. There are a few pictures that I will like to take again and I will contact those persons in the next few weeks. But this is also your opportunity to contact me if you would like to have your picture updated.
