2 Get Well Center. Resident Floyd Postma, 91 died peacefully last week at Grinnell Regional Medical Center after a short bout with pneumonia. He had lived in a Buckley independent living apartment since March 1986, 29+ years. At the time of his death, Floyd was the current longest living resident at Mayflower. (Elizabeth Ernst, who died in 2007, holds the record for resident duration at 35 years.) From the time he moved to Mayflower until a couple of years ago, Floyd was a regular early-morning exerciser in our Obermiller Center. He had suffered a heart attack in his 40 s and was determined it would never get the best of him! On the day before he died, while he and I visited in the hospital s ICU center, Floyd told me he was looking forward to coming to Mayflower s Health Center and getting therapy in the Get Well Room. Floyd, I said, do you mean your room in the Health Center? No, he replied. The Get Well Room, in the lower level of the Health Center. That s what Floyd called the Obermiller Center because he felt that access to exercise equipment had prolonged his life! I m biased, of course, but I think The Mayflower Community prolongs the lives of all of us. Floyd structured this tonic for delivery at 6:30am every morning! A service of celebration will be held for Floyd on Saturday, September 12 th at 2:30pm in our Carman Center. Tall Chairs! Our newest Mayflower resident, Margaret Rorvig (Pearson #206), is not very tall not at all! Last week, shortly after her move-in, Margaret, reading in the Pearson library, was sitting on the love seat. I noted her feet dangling, not reaching the floor. Partly in jest, I apologized to Margaret for not having an appropriate sized chair for her. She cheerfully replied, Oh, don t worry about that. I haven t been able to touch the floor since 4 th grade when we moved to the bigger chairs! Good Excuse for Hearing Aids. A week ago at my high school class reunion, I told a classmate s wife how much I respect him for getting hearing aids. She responded with feigned disgust, Oh sure. Mann Missive You want the full story? As soon as our little granddaughter started talking, and Kenny couldn t hear her, he went right out and got hearing aids. But, he didn t do anything about his hearing during all the years before that, when he couldn t hear me! Leaders in Hearing Loops. An article one week ago in the Wall Street Journal praised the use of hearing loop technology used to wire various public venues for broadcast of microphone amplified sound to be picked-up by hearing aids with T-Coil settings. ( A Technological Godsend to Counter Hearing Loss, Wall Street Journal, August 27, 2015). Author David G. Myers wrote, The first time I clicked on my hearing aids telecoils, it seemed like magic. the fog instantly dissipated. I could hear a crystal-clear voice speaking seemingly from the center of my head. The experience took me to the verge of tears. As the result of a suggestion from resident Anne Sunday and the research and planning by Jack Morrison, Mayflower s Director of Facility Operations, we have been using hearing loops in the Carman Center, the Buckley Dining Room, and the Kiesel Theatre for three years now. As a result, the Drake Community Library asked for our assistance to specify and wire the Caulkins Community Room for a hearing loop. Again, we provide leadership and support for the Mayflower and the Grinnell community! Construction Status Report. You may have noticed. You can now enter the Mayflower business office at the front entrance. For months I have had to provide detailed directions to our office, punctuating them with, Or, just ask for Bob Mann (or the business office). Most firsttime visitors have told me that what works best is the directions they have gotten from residents. Thank you. Now, enjoy coming in our front door! Bob Mann Executive Director (bmann@mayflowerhomes.com)

3 Mayflower Watertower Square Sidewalk Reporter with Jim Ahrens 122 Things are moving ahead as fall nears us. This has been a year of building and a year of considerable rain, a very good year so far for crops and a somewhat challenging year for building. Progress is still being made, so let us look at some of it. Photo #122 shows the driveway into the garage level with all the brickwork completed. You can see why a garbage packer could not make it inside. 128 Photo #124 shows the intersection of the tunnel from Watertower Square and the one from Edwards to Montgomery. This whole area has now had the soil packed 124 back into it with a gravel pad on top and insulation placed along 126 the walls and the waterproofing of the roof to complete the task. See Photo #128 to see the lot prepared for the installation of the circular driveway which has now been completed just this Wednesday. By the time this has cured, the area will be well on the way to reopening the front door into Pearson and Mayflower. 127 Completion work on the apartments has reached the cabinet installation phase as shown in Photo #126, and Photo #127 shows an example even nearer to completion. Photo #131 shows one of the newly installed patio decks on the 2nd floor. 131 The work will go on and it will not be too long before we will be showing new residents their new apartments and in the next issue we will have more progress toward completion.

It is April Churchill, aged 80, after entertaining the Queen and Prince Phillip for dinner at No. 10 Downing Street, agonizes in his wartime bunker below London whether finally to resign as Prime Minister as the Cold War gathers pace. He is old, tired, and losing his grip. As he tries to decide, he rolls back the years and reviews his uniquely eventful career, filled with history-changing events and famous people, glorious speeches, pithy comments, funny stories, his checkered relationship with his family, and all the wit and wisdom that has made Churchill beyond merely one of history s greatest figures into an imperishable legend. Request for Mayflower Van Drivers: Please consider being of service to our fellow residents by providing much needed transportation for local grocery shopping on Tuesday afternoons (1:30-3:30) in Mayflower s 12-passenger van. The need for additional drivers is immediate. This is a gratifying way to help those of us able to do our own shopping, but who lack the opportunity to drive ourselves. A regular driver s license (a commercial license is NOT necessary), viewing an on-line insurance company video and passing a simple on-line test, and the time and the desire to serve others is all that s needed. Current volunteer drivers are Greg Buntz, Shane Estes, Lyle Kuehl, Steve Lovig and John Noer. Thanks to a generous donor, new and current drivers alike can look forward to helping with transportation in a brand new 14-passenger bus in the coming months. Any of the current volunteers can provide more information, and Greg Buntz ( ) and Lyle Kuehl ( ) have agreed to be the primary contacts regarding this opportunity. Please give one of us a call. Thanks THE MINI GIFT SHOP NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT! One of the best ways to let people know about great opportunities open to all is by word of mouth, and today we need your support to let everyone know of the great bargains available in our Mini Gift Shop. Please tell your friends in the wider Grinnell Community about what we do and encourage them to stop and get acquainted with us. If you happen to need a skillet or picture frames, or pillows, or fine china, or jigsaw puzzles, or a lamp, or a book to read this is the place to come. We depend on donations so, if you have things you now find you don t need, this is the place to donate them and add to the shop s gifts to all of us. Most of the profit goes to the Human Needs Endowment Fund which helps residents in need. The earnings also support various Mayflower projects or programs as suggested by Residents. The Mini Gift Shop is located in the Lower Level of Pearson at 616 Broad Street and it is open from 9:30 to 11:30 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, as well as from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursdays.
