This report outlines the guidelines and requirements for our project. The guidelines will aid our team in creating an innovative cat toy that will simulate a live mouse by rolling back and forth, while responding to the cat s input. Animotion Toys Ltd. consists of three ambitious and hard-working fourth-year engineering students: Robert Grant, Ahmad Danesh and Di Xu. It is our intention to have the product completed and tested by March 21 st, and have it available for demonstration in April. 3 Executive Summary Functional Specifications of the Gyro Cat Toy Over the past years people have had less and less free time to spend with their pets, which play important roles in their lives. According to Michigan State University, over 34% of families have pets in the United States [6]. As the family s free time is filled with work, school, soccer practice, and various other activities, their pets are not getting the amount of attention they need. The Ontario Veterinary Medial Association warns that pet owners should play with [their] cat daily to ensure it is getting enough exercise [5] and suggests that cat toys [are] an excellent way for cats to stay in shape [5]. Unfortunately, with their busy lives, many pet owners are unable to find time for this simple yet essential task. Animotion Toys Ltd. is determined to engineer a fully automated toy that fulfills the need of cats and their owners. The toy will be a spheroid that is capable of freely rolling around the house. When the cat is within close proximity of the toy, the toy will begin to move. By rolling back and forth, simulating a live object, the ball will captivate the cat without the need of human presence. As the cat loses interests and leaves the proximity, the intelligent toy will enter a sleep mode and wait for the cat to return. This document lists the functional specifications that must be met by the Gyro Cat Toy. These requirements are put in place to ensure the proper performance, safety, quality, and testing of the product. Additional user documentation requirements are also provided to reduce confusion and improper use on the part of the user. The Gryo Cat Toy is composed of three key components; namely the ball, the collar, and the recharging unit. Besides the general requirements and regulations the toy must comply with, this document also states the performance, power, physical, and testing requirements that each component of the toy must follow. Our intention for setting these high standards is so that Animotion Toys Ltd. can offer a top quality product that will be highly competitive with strong user satisfaction. ii

6 1. Introduction Functional Specifications of the Gyro Cat Toy Cats have long played an important role in people s everyday lives. In recent years, the physical and emotional health of cats has become an important issue, and a concern, for cat owners everywhere. Animation Toys Inc. is devoted to engineer a solution that is not only intelligent and practical for the daily entertainment and exercise of cats, but is also user friendly and a time saver. This document states in detail the functional specifications of the Gyro Cat Toy. Besides the general system requirements stated under the system overview, we have also divided our product into three key components and specified the functional requirements and test requirements of each component Intended Audience This functional specification is intended for use by members of Animotion Toys Ltd. It will serve as a guideline for Animotion s engineers and will provide overall design goals. This documentation can also be used by Animotion s marketing team as a reference when promoting the product to potential investors or consumers Requirement Classification For the purpose of this report we will use the following requirement classification scheme: [Rn-C] Indicating a proof-of-concept requirement (1.2.1) [Rn-P] Indicating a production requirement (1.2.2) [Rn-CP] Indicating a requirement for both production and proof-of-concept (1.2.3) where n is the functional requirement number. 1

7 2. System Requirements Functional Specifications of the Gyro Cat Toy 2.1. System Overview Animotion s gyro cat toy is an interactive ball that rolls on the floor and responds to your cat s actions. Attached to the cat s collar is a small device which interacts with the ball, relaying the proximity of the cat to the ball. Depending on the distance between the cat and the ball, the ball will roll in different patterns, acting like a live mouse. Also included with the system is a battery charger which will charge the ball using a wall outlet. Figure depicts how the system will interact. Collar Ball Figure System Overview 2.2. There shall not be any electrical shock from handling the unit. All electrical connections, excluding the charging connections, will be concealed from the user. The toy must not be hot to the touch. The Ball The following sections outline the requirements that have been set forth for the portion of the toy that relates to the construction and operation of the ball General Requirements [R14-CP] [R15-CP] [R16-CP] [R17-CP] [R18-CP] The ball must be able to detect the wireless signal from the cat s collar. The ball must be able to distinguish between valid signals and in-valid signals, such as noise and other appliances. The ball must be capable of rolling both forwards and backwards. The ball must be capable of rolling on the following surfaces: carpet, linoleum, hardwood, tile, and cement The ball will roll such that the path of motion creates a circle of radius no less than 1 metre Power Requirements [R19-CP] [R20-CP] The ball will be powered by batteries of no more than 6VDC. The ball will be functional for a minimum of 2 days without battery replacement [C], or prior to recharging the unit [P] Physical Requirements [R21-P] The ball will be shaped in the form of a spheroid. [R22-P] The major and minor axes of the spheroid will be no greater than 12 cm and 7 cm, respectively. [R23-P] The ball will have a mass no greater than 300 grams. [R24-P] The ball s shell will be made such that the ball can be recharged via an external charger. [R25-C] The ball s shell will be easily opened for prototyping. [R26-P] The ball s shell will be sealed such that the internal components will not be easily accessible to the consumer. [R27-P] The ball will be sealed sufficiently such that splashing water will not affect its operation. [R28-P] The ball shall withstand a minimum of five falls from a height of 0.5m onto a concrete surface. [R29-P] The ball shall withstand a fall down a flight of stairs of at least 10 steps. 4

The ball will respond within 1 second to a jerk resulting from the cat hitting the ball. The ball will roll such that its translational velocity is at least 15cm/s. 5

11 4. The Collar The purpose of the collar is to act as a signal source used in the proximity sensing portion of this project. The following states the various functional specifications that must be met by the collar General Requirements [R33-CP] [R34-CP] The collar shall transmit a signal to communicate with the ball. The signal transmitted by the collar must be wireless in nature Power Requirements [R35-P] [R36-P] The collar shall be powered by batteries of no more than 4.5 V DC. The collar shall be functional for a minimum of 60 days without battery replacement Physical Requirements [R37-P] [R38-P] [R39-P] [R40-P] The collar shall weigh no more than 50 grams. The collar size shall have an adjustable range of cm. The collar shall be water resistance up to 100 cm. The collar shall be made of robust material that is capable of withstanding pressure from activities performed by the cat Performance Requirements [R41-CP] [R42-CP] The signal transmitted by the collar must be detectable within a minimum range of 60 cm in radius. The signal transmitted by the collar is omni directional Test Requirements [R43-CP] [R44-CP] [R45-P] [R46-P] A wireless signal should be generated from the collar. Wireless signal range should comply with [R41]. The battery life of the collar should comply with [R36]. The physical requirements of the collar are met. 6

12 5. The Recharging Unit The recharging unit is used to recharge the power supply of the ball which has a relative short battery life. This section states the requirements that must be met by the recharging unit General Requirements [R47-P] The unit is capable of recharging the ball up to a minimum of 95% capacity. The unit shall be made of robust water resistant material. The user s manual will include a trouble shooting guide. The user documentation will be written in French, English, and Spanish to satisfy product language requirements for North America. The user documentation will include the CE Marking. The user documentation will include warnings for danger of choking for small children, as required by the Toys Directive. 14 7. Conclusion The functional specification for an innovative gyro cat toy has been provided in this documentation. Included in these specifications are individual requirements that apply to the ball, collar, charger, and documentation for both the prototype and production stages. Further, comprehensive testing requirements are provided to ensure the quality of each module of the overall system. By adhering to the requirements in this document, Animotion Toys is confident that our prototype will be designed to the highest of quality. Beyond the prototyping and proofof-concept stages, Animotion Toys will continue to use the highest standards to ensure our products are of superior nature. 9
