Generation Date: 02/16/2016 Generated By: Jenni Long Title: TNReady Part II 3rd Grade ELA RI_L The life of the Monarch butterfly is special. It begins as an egg. The eggs are laid on milkweed plants. The egg hatches, and the caterpillar comes out. The baby caterpillar eats a lot of milkweed. The caterpillar keeps growing. After two weeks, the caterpillar finds a place to make its cocoon. A cocoon is a covering that the caterpillar forms around itself with silky thread. The caterpillar stays safe in its cocoon while it is changing into a butterfly. After 10 days, the butterfly will come out of the cocoon. It is able to fly away. It eats flowers and enjoys its very short life. Monarch butterflies only live for two to six weeks. Before they die, they lay their eggs on a milkweed plant. Then, the new caterpillars repeat the same steps. Monarch butterflies are born four times during the year. In February and March, the first set of butterflies comes out of the eggs. The second set of Monarch butterflies are born in May and June. The third group will be born in July and August. All of these Monarch butterflies will go through the same steps in life. They only live two to six weeks after becoming a beautiful Monarch butterfly. The last group of butterflies born in September and October are special. These Monarch butterflies fly to warm places like Mexico and California. They will live for six to eight months. Then, they fly back to lay their eggs. These eggs will hatch in February and March. The last group s longer life lets the Monarch butterfly will live on and on. 1. 12 Making Chocolate A Chocolate Beginning Did you know that chocolate comes from trees? Cacao trees grow deep in the jungles of South America. Pods filled with cocoa beans grow on the tree. People pick these beans to make chocolate. The beans cannot be used until they sit and harden. This takes about a week. Then, the beans are taken to chocolate factories. From Beans to Chocolate When the cocoa beans get to the factory, they are stored. Then, they are roasted at a very hot temperature. Next, a big machine takes the shell off the bean. It leaves the nib behind. The nibs are ground up into a liquid chocolate. To make the chocolate that we buy in the store, other things are added. The liquid chocolate is mixed with cocoa butter, sugar, and milk. Chocolate tastes different when more or less of these things are added. It also tastes different if cocoa beans from different jungles are used. Each cocoa bean has its own flavor. Getting to the Stores Once the chocolate is mixed, it is made into different candy shapes. Some chocolate is shaped like long rectangles. Others are shaped like circles. The chocolate is then wrapped and sent to stores. 26.
