1 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair Poll September 11-15, 2013 Pets Suppose your favorite pet needed surgery in order to live, what is the most amount of money you d be willing to pay for medical treatment? -- Up to 500 dollars, up to 1000 dollars, up to 3000 dollars, up to 5000 dollars, or more than 5000 dollars? Dog owners are willing to spend more to save their pet than cat owners. What s the most amount of money you d be willing to spend on an operation to save your pet s life? The top answer is $1000, picked by 22% of American pet owners. Nearly as many 19% - say they won t go above $500, and 14% say $100 is the most they d spend. About a third of Americans are willing to spend far more however: 10% would go up to $3000 and 9% would stop at $5000, while another 15% are willing to spend $10,000 or more. Dog owners are willing to spend more than cat owners. 20% of cat owners wouldn t spend more than $100 on their favorite pet, while this is true of just 12% of dog owners. Not surprisingly, there are differences by income level as well: 22% of Americans earning over $100,000 a year would spend $10,000 or more to save their pet, while this is true of just 13% of those earning under $50,000 a year. While less than one in four pet owners would spend over $10,000 to save their pet s life, more than three in four would risk their own life to do so. 78% of American pet owners say they would go back into their burning home in order to save their favorite pet, including two-thirds of those who wouldn t spend more than $500 on an operation to save their pet s life. Dogs seem to inspire more heroics from their owners than cats: 81% of dog owners would brave the flames to save their favorite pet, while this is true of just 71% of cat owners. 2 How much of the time can you trust your favorite pet s instincts about people? Always, most of the time, only sometimes, hardly ever, or never. Pet owners trust their pet s judgment when it comes to judging people. Three in four American pet owners say they can trust their pet s instincts about other people at least most of the time, including four in 10 who say their pet s instincts never fail. 42% say they can always trust their pet s instincts about other people, while another 33% say they can trust them most of the time. Less than one four say they can trust their pet s instincts only some of the time or less. Women (45%) who own pets are more likely to always trust their pet s instincts than men (39%). And the type of pet matters: dog owners (46%) are considerably more likely to say they can always trust their pet s instincts than are cat owners (32%). Americans tend to see a restaurant as the worst place for a pet owner to allow their pet, at least compared with some other questionable places. 39% say a restaurant is the worst place for their pet to be allowed, while 25% pick an airplane, 15% pick their last will and testament, and 13% pick their bed. Pet owners and Americans who don t own a pet agree that a restaurant is the top choice, though more who don t own a pet (44%) find that particular choice objectionable than those who do (35%). Men most fear a pet wedding, but women most fear a pet custody battle. Americans think wedding and divorces are among the worst things their pets could endure, ahead of therapy, portraits, and pet whisperers. 31% of Americans think a pet custody battle is the worst think you could subject your pet to, while nearly as many 28% - think that honor belongs to a pet wedding. 16% most object to a pet therapy session, while 6% each find it most objectionable to have them either sit still for a pet portrait or have them visit a pet whisperer. Men (30%) think a pet wedding would me most onerous to a pet, while women (35%) would rather have a pet avoid a custody battle. Americans are divided over the best reason not to get a pet. While 28% say the expense is the reason that would most dissuade them, 27% pick the difficulty of travelling on vacation. 20% pick cleaning up after them as the best reason to go petless, while 18% say the best reason is that, in the end, they all die. For Americans under 30 it s the expense of having a pet that is the biggest problem, while for those over 30, it s trying to plan a vacation. Older Americans look askance at snake owners, while younger Americans are wary of those who own spiders. If you don t want people to judge you for the pet you own, then don t get a snake. 37% of Americans say a snake is the pet that is most likely to make them think twice about their owners, from a list that also includes rats (24%), spiders (24%), chinchillas (5%), cats (4%), and hamsters (1%). Snakes are more objectionable the older one gets: while just 22% of Americans under 34 would think twice about someone who owned a snake, this percentage rises to 55% of Americans 65 and over. Instead, if you don t want someone under 34 to like you, your best bet might be to own a spider, which is the top choice of that younger demographic (32%). One, two, three, five, ten, or are there never too many cats? Three cats is too many cats for most Americans. How many cats is too many cats? For 24% of Americans the answer is any cats, but the top choice is three, picked by 25% of Americans. 17% each pick either two or five cats respectively as too many, while 11% would stop short at 10. 5 If your pet fish dies, do you flush it or bury it? Half of Americans say flush it down when disposing of their dead pet fish. Americans are divided as to what to do with their pet fish when it dies. While 44% would bury it, a slight majority of 51% would give it a burial at sea by flushing it down the toilet. Seniors are more likely to favor a dignified burial for their dead fish than are younger Americans. 51% of Americans 65 and older would prefer to bury a dead pet fish, while most under the age of 65 would flush it. If they could pick a famous fictional dog to own as their own, Americans top choice would pick Lassie, - the loyal border collie that rescues people and always finds its way home and that was featured in film and television primarily in the fifties and sixties. 39% pick lassie, ahead of the more independentminded beagle Snoopy from Peanuts (26%), while 14% pick another animated dog that can talk the anthropomorphic Brian Griffin from The Family Guy. Just 10% pick Toto from the Wizard of Oz, and just 2% pick Triumph the Insult Dog. While Lassie is the big favorite among Americans 30 and older (44%), she comes in third among younger Americans, picked by just 21%. 6 If you found out that your favorite pet suddenly had the ability to talk, do you think you would want to keep it, or would you want to get rid of it as soon as possible? Most Americans would keep their pet if it could suddenly start to talk. Apparently the vast majority of Americans wouldn t be too worried about what their pets would say about them if they suddenly found themselves with a pet that could talk. 87% of Americans and 93% of pet owners would keep their favorite pet if it suddenly started talking. 11% would rather get rid of it as soon as possible.
