2 GOOSE 13 October, MANAGEMENT: 2016, Husum, Germany CHALLENGES 2015 Gram Slot, Denmark, October 2015 Need & justification Goose-human conflicts and ecosystem impacts continue and are becoming more acute and complex Geese hold societal value (birdwatching, hunting, ecosystem services) Svalbard PfG plan in place and three more in the pipeline a resource-demanding endeavor For populations, such as Taiga Bean Goose, adaptive harvest management is required by their listings on AEWA Lack of coordinated approach to data collation and processing (population size, harvest, derogation shooting) 2

3 Need & justification (2) Some huntable populations have unfavorable conservation status Local or national approach would bring no tangible solutions Requires structured flyway-scale decision-making process A goose management platform can serve as a model for sustainable practicing of waterbird management in general Mandate (AEWA MOP6, Nov. 2015) Resolution 6.4: Requests the Secretariat to facilitate, funding permitting, the establishment of an European multispecies goose management platform and process to address sustainable use of goose populations and to provide for the resolution of humangoose conflicts, targeting as a matter of priority Barnacle and Greylag Geese populations for which management plans are yet to be developed as well as the Svalbard population of the Pinkfooted Goose and the Taiga Bean Goose for which plans are already in place, and invites interested Parties, Range States and other stakeholders to take pro-active role in this initiative, including to ensure necessary resources for the maintenance and the functioning of the platform. 3
