Doald Gamble, DVM, Named South Carolia Veteriaria of the Year The South Carolia Associatio of Veteriarias (SCAV) preseted Dr. Doald Gamble with the 2015 Veteriaria of the Year award at their aual coferece held October at Wild Dues Charlesto s Islad Resort. 4 SCAV Member Is Presidet of Natioal Orgaizatio Patty Scharko, SCAV member ad a veteriaria for Clemso s Livestock- Poultry Health ad Cooperative Extesio programs, will serve a two-year term as presidet of the America Associatio of Small Rumiat Practitioers (AASRP), which provides assistace to veteriarias who work with small rumiats: sheep, goats, camelids, elk, deer ad other related species. With more tha 1,000 members i the Uited States ad abroad, the associatio supports educatio, research ad traiig to promote health ad productivity of the small rumiat idustry. Fouded i 1968, it works with regulatory agecies, to further the professioal developmet of members ad to provide resources to elevate the stadards of small rumiat medicie. Scharko is a field ad extesio veteriaria based i Columbia who specializes i the productio, maagemet ad herd health of goats, sheep ad beef cattle. Her major activities iclude beef quality assurace, Scrapie eradicatio, biosecurity, ad FAMACHA/ parasite cotrol traiig i small rumiats. We re a orgaizatio for veteriarias ad professioals who wat to further their kowledge of small rumiats, build relatioships with peers aroud the world, ad provide the most curretly recommeded services ad products to cliets, Scharko said. This is a very challegig time i the field of aimal health ad I m excited for this opportuity. The ecoomic summit, held Oct. 21 i Chicago, showcased research coducted i 2015 by both the AVMA ad more tha 20 outside ecoomists, cotiuig a collaborative effort that is helpig the associatio gather iformatio ad data from a variety of sources, icludig its members. The summit updated all of the iformatio we ve gathered i the past ad preseted ew research from the AVMA ad those who are helpig us i our cotiuig efforts to fill the kowledge gaps that exist, Dicks said. We are buildig o the mometum we ve established, gatherig more iformatio that will help guide our research ad focus our efforts. Oe area where more iformatio is eeded focuses o how cosumer icome ad the price of veteriary care affect cosumer demad for veteriary services. We eed to get a better uderstadig of what drives ad motivates pet owers to seek veteriary care, Dicks said. Oce we get a better idea as to why ad how cosumers make decisios related to visitig the veteriaria ad selectig veteriary services, the better off we will be i helpig improve pet health ad addressig some of the ecoomic challeges we face. Whe it comes to practice profitability, Dicks ad other summit preseters all agreed that the professio has the opportuity ad the ability to icrease the demad for veteriary services. We ca icrease cliets ad patiets; we ca icrease services ad products; we ca icrease visits; ad we ca icrease compliace, Dicks said. Ad oe way to do that is for practices across the coutry, big or small, to collect cliet data through practice iformatio maagemet systems. This approach ca accurately measure cliets ad patiet umbers ad services used, it ca recapture iactive cliets ad it ca icrease ew cliets with the help of multiple marketig efforts. The debt-to-icome ratio for veteriary school graduates is holdig steady. All of this positive ecoomic ews was shared at the 2015 America Veteriary Medical Associatio (AVMA) Ecoomic Summit, paitig a picture of improved ecoomic idicators across the veteriary professio. The ecoomic state of the veteriary professio is improvig, said Michael Dicks, Ph.D., director of the AVMA Ecoomics Divisio. Overall, the veteriary professio is recoverig alog with the rest of the U.S. ecoomy, but we still have a ways to go. Specifically, veteriary startig salaries are up to a average of about $70,000. Uemploymet is at about 4 percet, the umber of applicats to available jobs has dropped to 1.5:1, ad the debt-toicome ratio of graduatig veteriary studets is hoverig right aroud 2:1. 4 The Veteriaria Update, Autum 2015 SCAV Newsletter.idd 4

Most people who visit the veteriaria are upper-middle ad upper-icome people, ad that s a serious cocer because that s oly 40 percet of the populatio, Dicks said. Veteriary spedig is discretioary spedig, ad we are i the process of tryig to determie where veteriarias fit i the discretioary spedig hierarchy. The icomes have t recovered adequately eough for the lower two-thirds of the populatio, ad we have to fid ways to reach those cliets who do t feel they ca afford to take their pets to the veteriaria. So what s ext? We re settig priorities as to what areas of research most eed our attetio, Dicks said. For istace, we are begiig to really dig deep ito learig why some practices are doig so well ad others are strugglig. We eed to look at what s happeig at these practices to determie why they are so successful. We have t bee focused o practices; we have bee focused o the markets. Now, we are turig our focus to the practices. The AVMA Ecoomics Divisio, the AVMA s Veteriary Ecoomics Strategy Committee ad its research parters will also place more attetio o the aalysis of cosumer demad characteristics, icludig how to provide affordable veteriary services without reducig stadards of care. Ad a ew focus will be placed o helpig ehace persoal fiacial educatio, from the veteriary school applicat to the idustry vetera with years of experiece. The good ews is that we are learig more every day ad gettig better iformatio that allows us to focus our resources to fix the problems ad address the challeges, Dicks said. We ca t fix thigs if we do t kow what s broke. SCAV Member Develops K9 Hadler Kit ad Trais SLED Officers How to Use It Dr. Rob Presley of Upstate Veteriary Service worked with North America Rescue (NAR) to develop a K9 medical kit for use by hadlers i the State of South Carolia. With my voluteer work with the South Carolia Law Eforcemet Divisio (SLED), Greeville Couty Sheriff s office ad several other agecies, I foud that the K9 hadlers i our state receive little to o traiig o how to care for their dogs i a tactical situatio. I fact, most hadlers do ot eve carry a medical kit to provide ay basic care for their dogs if a emergecy should arise. Obviously, if a dog is ijured i the field, ay delay i emergecy care could be life threateig, said Presley. Presley ad NAR re-desiged the expesive, large ad cumbersome K9 kit to produce a fial compact kit that could easily be wor o the hadler s tactical vest, without addig udue weight or bulk ad it costs less tha $125. The NAR K9 hadler kit simply eables hadlers to provide life-savig therapy for their dogs at the poit of ijury. It icludes products to specifically address commo issues see i workig dogs, icludig traumatic ijury, massive hemorrhage, gastric dilatio volvulus (GDV), ad heat stroke. Most importatly, each oe of these products i this kit is also accepted for use i humas, icludig the combat prove C-A-T touriquet. Therefore, we created a kit that ca be life savig for ot oly the dog, but also the hadler or ay other ijured perso, added Presley. At this time, South Carolia SLED has 21 dogs that are i active service. Ufortuately, oe of these hadlers have a medic kit to provide this potetially life -savig therapy to their dogs. To assist with the purchase of these kits, SCAV doated $1,000 toward this project. I additio to providig SLED with the kits, Dr. Presley will also coduct traiig classes for the hadler. The idea to hoor the war dogs was sparked after Mayo leared of some startlig military workig-dog statistics.

Mayo says some were killed i combat, but may were see as surplus equipmet ad euthaized. It was just the word equipmet that really got me, he said. The choppers, the weapos... those were the equipmet.

Mayo worked as a ifatry dog hadler durig his time i Vietam, ad he still feels idebted to the aimals. Four years ago, he teamed up with St. Charles sculptor Reee Bemis to execute his visio.
