5 Laboratory methods Identification SOPs are based on the Manual of Clinical Microbiology, ASM, 8 th edition and on the Schweizerisches Lebensmittelbuch ed Colony morphology, cultural, gram staining, mobility, biochemical and antibiotic-susceptibility characteristics Molecular method based on the 16S rrna gene and rpob gene sequencing. Specially for C. upsaliensis, C. helveticus, H. canis, Arcobacter sp., Helicobacter sp. [Reference: Genetic relatedness within the genus Campylobacter inferred from rpob sequences. Bozena M. Korczak et al., 2006, IJSEM, 56, ] Molecular method based on a PCR for identification and differentiation of C. fetus subsp. venerealis and C. fetus subsp. fetus. [Under validation]

7 Research projects Monitoring system for Campylobacter sp. based on Multilocus-Sequence-Typing (MLST) Safeguard a well characterized Campylobacter culture and data collection Establish a national system for Swiss Campylobacter monitoring based on gene sequence data Campylobacter fetus subspecies differentiation Identify specific genetic markers that allow subspecies genotyping of Campylobacter fetus

8 Monitoring programme Directive 2003/99/EC on the monitoring of zoonoses and zoonotic agents is the basis for the monitoring programme in Included is a national monitoring programme for antimicrobial resistance The annual strategy for the programme is in correlation with the EU The Swiss Federal Veterinary Office is responsible for the organisation Laboratories involved: - ZOBA: Isolation of agents from samples of animals at the slaughterhouse - Cantonal Laboratories: Isolation of agents from meat and milk products at the retail - ZOBA: All antimicrobial susceptibility tests
