2 Students, Others Involved F x S = R Routine Use of Dangerous Drugs Department compliant with current legislation and registered as a veterinary facility providing and supplying prescription drugs. Inspected for compliance by RCVS inspectorate. COSHH risk assessments have been completed for all drugs used and data sheets are available in the pharmacy. Dangerous drugs are only handled or administered by a veterinary surgeon or a registered veterinary nurse under the instruction of a veterinary surgeon Dangerous drugs records are maintained for all relevant drugs Dangerous drugs are stored in a dangerous drugs safe which is in swipe card restricted area of veterinary building Low (2)

3 Use of Etorphine or M99 or Immobilon. This drug is a severe respiratory depressant and can be absorbed through broken skin and mucus membranes. Two trained staff conversant with the etorphine accident procedure must be present when this drug is used. Staff must carry at least one radio and one mobile phone in order to call for assistance if required. All equipment boxes include a summary of the etorphine emergency procedure. The most senior vet MUST brief the capture team on the use of etorphine and the emergency process. A visor and gloves should be used when loading or cleaning darts. A protective cap should be in place over the dart during pressurisation. The loaded pressurised dart should be placed immediately into the barrel of the dart rifle. Contaminated syringes should be discarded immediately into the sharps bin carried during a procedure. Water canister should be carried with kit to be used to wash off contamination immediately. Reversal agent Naloxone is routinely carried in anaesthesia kit. Darts (including discharged darts) must only be handled using gloves. Once the animal is recumbent and the dart has been removed the dart site should be washed thoroughly with copious amounts of water to removed any residual drug MODERA TE (3)

4 Accidental Injection/Contamination of Dangerous Drug Use of Gaseous Anaesthetics Emergency protocol is stored in equipment boxes and in the pharmacy and treatment rooms. Antedotes are always in stock and stored with the dangerous drugs. Staff have received training on dealing with an incident. First Aid provision is present within the zoo. Scavenging systems are in use. These may be either active or passive systems. High risk people (primarily pregnant women) should only be present is areas with active scavenging. Whenever possible animals are intubated for procedures. Tight fitting masks are used when intubation is not possible. All staff, students and visitors should inform the senior veterinary nurse if they are or could be pregnant so that precautions can be taken. 5 Deliberate Self-Administration or Misuse of Drugs. Access to the dispensary and pharmacy is restricted to qualified ZSL veterinary staff only. All use of drugs is recorded accurately in record books so unexplained use of drugs would be recognised quickly. Anyone suspecting that a colleague is misusing drugs should report this immediately to the Head of Services or an appropriate senior manager for further investigation. Anyone suspected of abusing drugs will have their access removed until the situation has been investigated and resolved. Consideration will be made on reporting the situation to the police (for criminal offences) and/ or professional bodies (for breach of professional standards) First aid provision is present on site during business hours. Data sheets with relevant information are stored in the pharmacy to be given to medical services if necessary.
