1 ACUP Rodent Health Monitoring Program The intent of this Animal Care and Use Procedure (ACUP) is to describe the CARE Rodent Health Monitoring Program. This ACUP is intended for animal care staff and CARE veterinary staff. This ACUP is approved by the Cornell Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Any exemption must be approved by the IACUC prior to its application. TABLE OF CONTENT 1. Introduction 2. Materials 3. Procedures 4. Personnel Safety 5. Animal Related Contingencies 6. References 7. Appendix 1. Introduction The rodent health monitoring program measures pathogen status of rodents housed at Cornell University. Health monitoring results provide objective results for the biosecurity efforts designed to prevent the rodent populations from exposure to infectious pathogens. Historical health monitoring data are available on the CARE webpage. 2. Materials Equipment for collecting blood. Equipment for endo and ectoparasites evaluation. Rodent transport containers. 3. Procedures a. General: i. For monitoring the population of rodents in breeding and experimental units, monitor only populations housed for more than 4 6 weeks. ii. Use outbred females as sentinels placed at the beginning of the monitoring period when about 4-6 weeks of age. iii. House the sentinels in the same manner as the population, and ensure that they receive the same bedding, food and water. iv. Maintain and sample a minimum of two sentinel mice per sentinel cage. More sentinels can be housed in the same cage to serve as backups. v. One sentinel cage can monitor up to 80 cages.

2 vi. At every bedding change, contaminate sentinel cages with about 2-5 mls of dirty bedding from every monitored cage. b. CARE veterinary/technical staff: i. Monitor for specific pathogens and sample at the specific frequencies as outlined in the appendix of this document. ii. Collect perianal tape, fur pluck, and fecal samples for in house evaluation. iii. Collect serum samples and send to IDEXX-RADIL (Research Animal Diagnostic Laboratory University of Missouri) for clinical profiles as defined in the appendix of this document. iv. Ship live animals to IDEXX-RADIL for basic and comprehensive profiles. v. When presented with a sick or dead sentinel, send serum to IDEXX-RADIL, if possible, and submit fresh, or fresh fixed, tissues for histopathologic examination. vi. Review IDEXX-RADIL results and promptly inform the principal investigators and facility managers of unanticipated results. Note: Specific diagnostic panel composition may vary with unique animal colony parameters (e.g., closed breeding colony) and are tailored by the facility CARE veterinarian. c. CARE webmaster: post diagnostic results to the web.. 4. Personnel Safety Medical emergencies: call 911 When working with animals, wear appropriate PPE, observe proper hygiene, and be aware of allergy, zoonosis, and injury risks. Refer to the CARE Occupational Health and Safety webpage for more information. 5. Animal Related Contingencies Post contact information for emergency assistance in a conspicuous location within the animal facility. Emergency veterinary care is available at all times including after working hours and on weekends and holidays: Biomedical settings: CARE (pager ) Non-emergency veterinary questions & requests for care, call or CARE veterinary staff at or care@cornell.edu, respectively. 6.
