RESEARCH COLLABORATION FOR EMPOWERMENT OF SMALL SCALE FARMERS
Urgency of Building a Network
Solid networking -> requirement for research results more widespread. Network related ques;ons: "How can I help?" Not "What can I get?" Conduc;ng research collabora;on to network level requires commitment and good performance. With 'what can I get' may be difficult to con;nue, on the contrary based on the spirit of 'how I can help'
Who get advantage of networking - organiza;ons and researchers. Both increase its credibility. Such increase as a direct impact of human resource capacity building. Researchers are pushing themselves to meet the demands of performance outlined and trying not to disappoint the team. Increasingly, researcher concerned increases his capacity, in conduc;ng the research Researchers must have capacity according to the field under study
ICASEPS is able to posi;on itself as a partner of interna;onal research organiza;ons. Achievement -> because the capacity of the researcher is able to show good performance and give sa;sfac;on to the work partner. Researcher capacity with suppor;ve management provides opportuni;es for ICASEPS to establish coopera;on and be able to realize the points of its vision and mission.
Learning to Build a Network
The nature of easy to mingle and adjust and eager to learn, communica;on skills along with the mastery of language is the capital. Cri;cal and curious nature needs to be possessed, so as to contribute to any discussion. It takes considerable insight in the field of discussion topics Par;cipa;on in networking requires a full commitment. Searching for informa;on from various sources, browsing the internet, through mass media, following scien;fic mee;ngs, informal mee;ing are some ways to keep up with informa;on.

Community empowerment
Experience with Government InsKtuKon The essence of community empowerment is to facilitate the community, in order to be able to improve their welfare independently Par;cipatory empowerment will yield be`er results, especially from its diversity in rural areas.
The impact of community empowerment ac;vi;es is not only physical or financial, but also in various other aspects, such as awareness for working in groups, the addi;on of insight, the desire to create a more prosperous life, the ability to express opinions in public, able to work with outsiders, etc. Empowerment can increase public awareness of rights and obliga;ons as ci;zens and this is the true embryo of rural democracy.
The need to have a social laboratory in order to have a direct contex with community development more real. There are several consequences: (I) modifica;on of the financial administra;on system, specifically for review of acts / interven;ons, (Ii) the need for research program bias on the aspect of community empowerment (Iii) ini;a;on of coopera;on with NGOs that pursue community assistance.
Experience with World OrganizaKon Community empowerment through a study that uses eco-health approach in West Java rural areas in Various issues were raised in a study en;tled "Eco-Health Assessment of Poultry Produc;on Cluster for Improvement of Small-Scale Livelihoods", ie. economic issues, social issues, policy issues, environmental and public health issues and epidemiological issues
In addi;on to conven;onal data collec;on, the team works with farmers, local communi;es, local governments and other relevant stakeholders to iden;fy and analyze poultry produc;on issues, find prac;cal solu;ons, and implement interven;ons to improve livelihoods of small poultry farmers at the site of the study.
FGD PPC
Interven;ons in West Java Loca;on 1, the difficulty of water to feed the chickens in the dry season had been intervened with the construc;on of deep wells and two tubs of water Loca;on 2, compost house, to process chicken manure into organic fer;lizer. The use of organic fer;lizer is perceived as beneficial for their garden. In both loca;on, the produc;on of herbal drink for chickens was also introduced and the current impact on chicken health well observed by farmers.
For sustainability efforts, both sites are strengthened by trainings for group administrators, group members as well as other farmers from outside the group,
Ecohealth Approach for Research Ecohealth is a research approach that studies how changes in the earth's ecosystem affect human health that has many aspects. Ecohealth examines changes in the environmental biology, physical, social and economic and these changes are related to human health. New infec;ous diseases caused by viruses such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), Ebola virus, Nipah virus, Avian Flu and Hantavirus have all been found to result from changes in ecosystems made by humans.
The Ecohealth approach is different from the tradi;onal research approach, which consists of only one discipline. A tradi;onal epidemiological study may indicate an increase in malaria rates in an area, but does not address how or why it increases. Environmental health assessments may recommend spraying pes;cides in certain amounts, in certain areas to reduce their spread. An economic analysis can calculate the cost and effec;veness per rupiah incurred for such a program.
Ecohealth approach brings together the involvement of doctors, veterinarians, ecologists, economists, social scien;sts, planners and others to learn and understand ecosystem changes that affect human health The ecohealth approach in addi;on to involving various specialist disciplines also involves affected community members, even before the study begins. Through the ini;al mee;ng, it is oien able to lead to a crea;ve approach and can result in a more "socially meaningful" solu;on. Ecohealth prac;;oners call this synergy with transdiscipline and dis;nguish it from being mul;disciplinary
The ecohealth approach also appreciates the par;cipa;on of all involved groups, including decision makers and believes issues of equality between gender, socioeconomic class, age and even species; Essen;ally to understand the problem to be studied. Jean Lebel (2003) states that transdiciplinarity, par;cipa;on and equality as the three pillars of Ecohealth. IDRC develop those into six pillars: transdiciplinarity, par;cipa;on, gender and social jus;ce, systems thinking, sustainability and interven;on (Charron, 2011).
Lastly... From experience of maintaining commitments to any network, despite many problems, is important to maximize result. It confirms that there is indeed a inside power, which governs human life in this world. The more vigorous place to work, it brings its own sa;sfac;on in pursue the world of agricultural research.
The power and willingness to share, with all the limita;ons that exist have been able to be realized in various ac;vi;es of empowerment. Various interven;ons that have been implemented in various loca;ons, such as in Bekasi, Bogor, Sukabumi, Subang, Ciamis and other places was not easy to forget
Thank you for your all anenkon Edi Basuno
