with the financial support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs Biotechnology Platform for Research and Training on Parasitic Zoonoses in South East Asia Workshop / Training on Diagnosis and control of human and animal trypanosomes and their vectors in Asia: from field to laboratory Yogyakarta, May 19 24, 2014 Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Gadjah Mada University
Trypanosomes and their vectors Trypanosoma evansi causes a trypanosomosis (Surra), mechanically transmitted by haematophagous flies, such as Tabanids and Stomoxes. The principal host species of T. evansi varies geographically in Indonesia, horses, buffalos and cattle are particularly affected, including wildlife and rodents. Human infections have been recently described in India, surra a potential emerging parasitic zoonosis. Rodents are also a reservoir of Trypanosoma lewisi, that could be found in Indonesia
Trypanosomiasis in Indonesia Thailand Philipines Malaysia Malaysia Sumatra Singapore West Papua Java Kalimantan Sulawesi Yogyakarta West Nusa East Nusa Tenggara Tenggara Australia Cattle Trypanosomiasis Buffalo Trypanosomiasis Horse Trypanosomiasis (Cattle also) Cattle and Buffalo Trypanosomiasis BioTraps
Vectors and Pathogens Suborder Family Species Nematocera Culicidae Anopheles sp (malaria vector) Simuliidae Ceratopogonidae Psychodidae Culex sp (virus vector: Dengue, Arbovirus, etc) Simulium sp (Onchocercosis) Culicoides sp (Leucocytozoonosis, Blue tongue) Phlebotomus sp (Leishmaniasis) Brachycera Glossinidae Glossina sp (Trypanosomiasis) Tabanidae Muscidae Tabanus sp (Trypanosomiasis, Anaplasmosis) Musca sp (bacterial vector) Stomoxys sp (Trypanosomiasis, Dermatophilus)
Musca domestica Family: Muscidae (House-flies and Stable-flies) Mechanical transmission of pathogens, accidental myiasis. Stomoxys calcitrans biting pest (human and veterinary pest)

Trypanosoma and Surra in Indonesia Many Trypanosomosis outbreaks occur in bovines in Indonesia, and many biting flies as mechanical vector of Trypanosomosis. 28 species of Tabanus, 5 Chrysops species and 5 Haematopota sp. were reported as potential vectors of surra in Indonesia The high density of stable fly populations can severely decrease livestock productivity.
Outbreak in Sumba Island Tabanus and Stomoxys flies has a significant impact in horses and cattle trypanosomosis in Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia during a Surra outbreak in (393 cases, 350 dead). In several Islands in Indonesia, Tabanus rubidus can also transmit zoonotic disease such as Antrax. To date, there is no control method available.

Aims of the workshop To share knowledge and experience on trypanosomes and their vectors: diagnosis epidemiology, impact and control of the disease as well as trapping, identification, studies of transmission mechanisms, epidemiological impact as vectors and ways of control. To strengthen animal health systems approach, focusing on national policy, coordinated at different levels of government to increase technical skills. To support the sustainable Indonesia s veterinary services in Surra erradication according to international standards set by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). To develope joint research projects amongst French and South East Asian research institutes and universities.
One Health Open workshop 19 th May 2014 The workshop will be held under the umbrellas of GREASE and the NAHIAT, in order to strengthen cross-sectorial and multidisciplinary exchanges about trypanosomosis management among professional form different sectors (Animal health, human health, environment, rural development). Lectures and open discussions will be held on future collaborations in the One Health (OH) conceptual framework, on trypanosomes and vectors, including livestock, wildlife, environment (both social and natural), veterinary and human medicine it will be open to a large audience, especially to represent various geographical areas of Indonesia.
Registered Workshop 20 th to 24 th May 2014 Limited to 20 participants Presentations: (1) trypanosomes both in humans and animal reservoir in Asia, diagnosis methods and potential control methods, and (2) their transmission mechanisms and vectors, including trapping, identification and control. It will include lectures, field work, practices and laboratory activities
Expected results and outputs To overview the problem of trypanosomes in Asia, both in humans and animals including livestock, domestic and wild animal; To implement and interpret specific diagnosis of trypanosomoses in mammals, using parasitological, serological and DNA based methods; To implement trapping and identification of the main genera/species of biting insects acting as mechanical vectors of trypanosomes in livestock; To draft common research project for the control of biting insects within a OH framework To build up research methodology for epidemio-surveillance of trypanosomoses.
