The VMCAS application has been overhauled with new formats, processes and requirements so this lecture is a must for those that are applying to veterinary school this spring as well as those applying in the future! Other content in this lecture includes: How to choose the right school; How to be a competitive applicant; Tackling Student Debt and more!! Tony s lectures are fun, interactive, & informative and will keep you engaged while ensuring you have all the information you need to apply to veterinary school. There will also be new surprises this year, so you must attend to find out about them! One Health Forum Dr. Lonnie King (Dean, the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine) Dr. King will discuss the veterinarian s role in protecting animal and human health. Wildlife Encounter Barbara Ray During this presentation students will learn about the care and preventive health of captive wildlife, emerging disease issues, ecology of native species, SCRAM and wildlife/human coexistence and what we do to improve human/animal relationship. What s Best for the Animal? Dr. Andrew Bowman Take a close look at the Veterinarian s Oath in practice and the key differences in the ethics and science that drive care for companion animals versus today s farm animals. For food animal veterinarians, what s best for the animal is often based on what s best for the herd. We will cover: Why the ethics behind the use of health management tools, including antibiotics, are different for food animals versus pets. How different housing systems affect the welfare of pregnant sows, and the AVMA and AASV positions about the role of the caretaker in animal well-being. Why pain management tools and practices are different for food animals versus pets.

Promoting Safe Pet Ownership in a One Health world: Working Toward Reducing Pet-Associated Zoonoses Dr. Jason Stull Pets provide many beneficial health effects to people but can also be a source of infections. Disease risks vary with age and immune status of household members, animal species owned, and animal-contact practices. This presentation will review the health risks associated with animal contact and guidelines to reduce pet-associated infections. Approaches at integrating human and veterinary healthcare efforts will be stressed. Animal Behavior and Welfare in Farm Animals Dr. Katy Proudfoot Animal behavior and welfare is increasingly becoming recognized as an essential component in the veterinary curriculum. An animal s behavior can give you an insight into the health of the animal, how safe it is to work with, and how well it is coping with its environment. The ability of an animal to cope is often considered its welfare - those that cope well experience good welfare, whereas those that do not cope with experience poor welfare. Over the last 40 years, interest in animal welfare has grown to the point where it is currently studied as a scientific discipline. Although animal welfare applies to any species, the main focus of research in this area has been on animals used in food production. This lecture will introduce the topic of animal welfare, and will briefly describe how a better understanding of behavior and welfare can be useful for veterinarians working with farm animals. Large Animal Surgery Cases Dr. Andy Niehaus This is an interactive session highlighting a few of the many cases seen by the OSU Farm Animal Service. We will discuss medical and surgical treatments for some of the most common conditions plaguing farm animals today. We will cover obstetrical procedures, gastrointestinal procedures, orthopedics, and more. This action packed hour is not one you want to miss. See you there! Emotional First Aid Kit for Veterinary School Dr. Jennifer Brandt Veterinary school marks one of the most pivotal periods in the life of a veterinarian. The four years of training are a time of immense learning and professional growth, and a stage of great personal development. The majority of veterinary students who matriculate directly out of an undergraduate program face new and bigger responsibilities loan budgeting, time management, living environment/roommates, and less free time for self-care. Faced with academic demands and long hours unlike any they have ever before experienced, veterinary students are universally forced to decide what to keep in their overbooked schedules, and what to eliminate. For many, veterinary school is the first true taste of independent living and the greater demands of the medical profession. This seminar will review the essential elements of Mental Fitness to help prepare you for the rigors of veterinary training. Humane Law & the Role of Veterinarians in Enforcing It Christian Courtwright The discussion will cover the basics on handling a humane investigations case for law enforcement, animal control or a humane society. It will discuss the role of a veterinarian in an investigation and how they can assist in a successful prosecution. The talk will cover the basics on how to gather and control evidence, building a case and preparing for court.

Stack Your Deck: Tips to Ace Your Next Interview Amanda Fark What makes a good interview? How can you make a great impression? Find the answers to these questions and more as Amanda Fark, Director of the Office of Career Management, discusses tips to improve your interviewing skills, boost your confidence, and help you ace your veterinary school interview. DVM2B - Dr. Carol Hillhouse Those entering the field of veterinary medicine are facing situations that will test their ability to adapt and solve problems within the profession. Is a DVM degree still valuable? Life as an Equine Veterinarian Dr. Teresa Burns This lecture will describe the path to becoming an equine veterinarian, as well as the various gratifying and intellectually stimulating career options available within equine veterinary medicine - we hope to inspire many of you to join our ranks after hearing this talk! The Fishy Side of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Stephen Reichley Fish are the most common pet in the United States and their importance in food production and research are growing rapidly. With capture fisheries no longer able to meet the growing demand, it is estimated that 62% of seafood consumption will come from aquaculture by Come learn about this fascinating and growing sector of veterinary medicine. The Pre-vet Student s Role in One Health Ken Johnson Nowhere in One Health has there been more progress than in Comparative Medicine where our companion animals are continually proven to be models for the same human diseases. While veterinary and human medicine have traditionally been separate scientific disciplines, veterinary medicine is rapidly becoming the locus for advances in the treatment of diseases in humans. Learn more about Comparative Medicine and what pre-veterinary students are doing to promote One Health. Columbus Zoo & Aquarium Today we welcome visitors from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium s Animal Programs Department. The Animal Programs department started back in 1985 to assist up and coming star Jack Hanna. Today they travel the country and the state of Ohio connecting people to wildlife. It is their hope that these up close and hands on interactions will encourage people to protect the many amazing creatures that roam this earth. This personalized program will allow you to visit with the animals that travel with Jungle Jack Hanna to shows such as Good Morning America and The Late Show with David Letterman. Discover where they are from, what they eat and get up close and personal with these animal stars and their handlers. Considering studying veterinary medicine abroad? A perspective from The University of Edinburgh Vet School Dr. Sally Anne Argyle

This lecture will provide an insight into what life is like at the University of Edinburgh. We will cover what it is like to live in the city, what our student population look like, right the way through to a description of our facilities and our curriculum plus information on how to apply and what the applications requirement are. Deadly Creatures Down Under: Surviving Vet School in Australia Dr. Stef Lim Everyone knows Australia has some of the most dangerous animal species in the world. Hear from our recent graduate Stef on her Vet School experience and tips for studying in Melbourne, Australia! A Message from Your Cat Dr. Tony Buffington Lower Urinary Tract Signs in Cats - From FUS to Pandora Syndrome Research over the past 25 years suggests that some, possibly many, cats with these signs actually have a disease of the central nervous system that affects the bladder - and other organs as well a real Pandora s box of problems. This talk will focus on what could be going on in these cats, how their problem developed, and how we have learned to prevent and treat it. Wildlife Rehabilitation (Ohio Wildlife) Kristi Krumlauf What is Wildlife Rehabilitation? Kristi Krumlauf will provide an introduction to wildlife rehabilitation and you will learn about the Ohio Wildlife Center. Life as a Zoo veterinarian Dr. Michael Barrie This lecture is an overview of the life of a veterinarian working with non-domestic species. It will provide the student with an understanding of what the rewards and limitations are when working in a non-traditional field of veterinary medicine. This lecture will also give some examples of a typical day as a zoo medicine veterinarian. International Veterinary Programs - Points to Ponder Dr. Eloise Jillings Have you considered Studying for your veterinary degree outside North America? The presenter of this session, Eloise Jillings, grew up in North America but did her veterinary degree in New Zealand. In this presentation she will highlight some things to think about when considering studying overseas - including international school culture/climate, model of education, costs, advantages and disadvantages etc. She'll show some comparisons of different schools and include information about the Massey University veterinary program in New Zealand.

Life in Veterinary School Current Veterinary Students Here the victories, challenges and advice of current veterinary students. One Health/One Medicine Dr. Carol Hillhouse One Health--What does it mean? How can multiple disciplines collaborate for the benefit of all species? Starting Off on the Right Paw: The Basics of Puppy Behavior and Problem Prevention Dr. Meghan Herron Behavior problems in dogs are the number one reason for relinquishment to shelters and are a top cause for owner-requested euthanasia. Many serious problems can be prevented if appropriate care is given during the early, sensitive weeks of a puppy's life. This session walks through the behavioral developmental periods in dogs and how each shapes adult behavior. Furthermore a brief discussion of preventing problems in a number of common aspects of canine behavior will be presented.
