2017 CBEP-Ukraine Regional One Health Research Symposium How to do a Good Science some remarks of your Polish collegue Dr Wojciech Iwaniak, DVM, PhD Assistant Professor National Veterinary Research Institute Department of Microbiology National Reference Laboratory for Brucellosis, Tularaemia, Anthrax, Glanders 57 Partyzantów Avenue, Pulawy, Poland iwaniakw@piwet.pulawy.pl th of April 2017, Kyiv, Ukraine
The National Veterinary Research Institute is mainly focused on: research in veterinary medicine - diagnosis and prophylaxis of infectious diseases of animals, hygiene and toxicology of food of animal origin and feeds, development of the production technology of veterinary biologicals and diagnostic kits, NVRI is also involved in: postgraduate training and professional specialisation, evaluation the quality of biologicals, drug and vaccine licence process, expertise and for the veterinary administration. The Institute as the National Reference Laboratory is responsible for the diagnosis of infectious diseases of animals, surveillance of epidemiological situation in the country, and monitoring of xenobiotics in food of animal origin and feeding stuffs. The Institute issues the quarterly Journal of Veterinary Medicine" in English in which original papers on all aspects of the veterinary medicine and related disciplines are published.
Shortly about me: more than 20 years of experience researching brucellosis, tularemia, and leptospira infection. national expert in standardization of Brucella antigens and the harmonization of serological methods used in the European Union. responsible for the activity of the Brucellosis, Tularemia, and Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) providing expertise to the Regional Laboratories in Poland (Proficiency Testing) Mainly focused on: evaluation and development of new techniques used in the diagnosis of the infections caused by biothreats bacterial agents. tularemia testing in Poland, looking for the reservoirs of the infection, as well as developing novel methods for tularemia diagnosis. EMERGE project building and the maintenance of the management system according to the PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005. And all the time Brucellosis. The most important aspect of laboratory work is the standardization of methods. Because, when we use the same standardized methods, we talk the same diagnostic language
How to Give an Impressive Presentation Basics Say what you are going to say Only a few points in the introduction Just give the talk tell the story Summarize main issues in the conclusion Please, don`t build suspense to the audience and in the end then unveil a secret people don`t like it.
How to Give an Impressive Presentation Prepare your material so that it tells a logical story Subject: title, authors Introduction Method Results Summary or conclusion Use examples, anecdotes, and significant details Guide your audience through your story
Presenting methods, data, results Material and Methods Mostly the minimum data should be presented Tables For a small amount of data - tables are very useful Include international units if you present for example CFT results Always show data source if they are not your own data Overloaded tables looks badly and they are unreadable!!! Figures 1 figure 1000 words Figures should be readable, understandable Use as simple as possible figures Use colors but logically and not too agressive Explain your graphs properly (axes and variables) Include reference on figures Don`t use sounds. Any logical animation is enough for your audience.
Font Using Fonts should be 16 points or even bigger: 18 points 20 points 24 points 28 points 36 points USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS YOU MAKE THE READING MUCH DIFFICULT
Color of the fonts Darker fonts against a light background Lighter fonts against a dark background
How to prepare your presentation? Just practice your talk!!!! See what you don t understand Feel the a natural flow of your talk Come up with better phrasings and finding the way how to describe different issues Don`t have your talk in your mind practicing helps you to find the proper words Checking the time limit - important Speak loud to get a feeling where the upper limit of your voice is Don`t try to memorize your talk Don`t practice your talk too much!!!! You must try to maintain moderation in your practicing.
How to perform the presentation tiny tips Look at the people during your talk Be happy when you are talking to your audience Don t worry if you stop to think Don t be in a hurry but try to be according to the schedule Have only a few concluding statements not too much!!!
Communication in science Lack of good communications training beyond traditional resources (journals, conference presentation). Nowadays, the scientist must be prepared to communicate with a non-specialists, like students, resource managers, policy- and decision-makers, politicians, the news media, the general public services and many more During the studies, students are usualy not prepared to communicate efficiently. Reason of bad communication Lack of resources/skills is what prevents young scientists from participating in science Sometimes lack of resources is very creative for people and pushes them to create something new, useful, discovering.
Networking Just realise that you need to contact different people to improve your skills Be sure that you really need that Start searching the scientific partners Improve you English NVRI netwotking QUANDHIP - Quality Assurance Exercises and Networking on the Detection of Highly Infectious Pathogens EMERGE - Efficient response to highly dangerous and emerging pathogens at EU level EuroBioTox The projects provided a supportive European infrastructure and strategy for external quality assurance exercises (EQAE), training, and biosafety/biosecurity quality management.
