4 According to Governmental Decrees and and Law n.30, the Italian Breeders Association (A.I.A.) carries out the activity of recording dairy cattle productivity. Official Milk Recording are executed according to the A4, A6, B and Authomatic Milking System methods of the International Agreement. All over the Italian territory, the Provincial Breeders Associations (A.P.A. s) organize the activity by their own staff who collect required data in the recorded farms. Data are then transmitted to the Computing Center of A.I.A. s Central Office, where they are processed, and promptly sent back to the Provincial Offices. Results of the milk recordings on dairy cattle carried out from October the 1 st September the 30 th 2016 (simply called year ) are reported in this publication to Data are collected from 95 provinces. Provinces with less than 50 observations are not reported in the following tables. Tables of series n.1 show the situation of milk recording during the year with regard to closed lactations of milk recorded cows, recorded farms, and the average numbers of milk recorded cows per farm. The total number of milk recorded cows is 1,386,275 located in 17,402 farms with an average of 79.7 head per farm. Starting from 1991, only the real number of milk recorded farms are reported, i.e. farms are included in the total amount only once, regardless of the number of breeds. The number of closed lactations is 999,503; 864,246 of them are more than 200 days long. In Northern Italy 1,189,598 cows were recorded, representing 85.8% of the entire population. They are located in 14,149 farms averaging heard per farm. In Central Italy, 55,257 cows were controlled in 815 farms, representing 4.0% of the entire population averaging heads per farm. In Southern Italy and Islands 141,420 cows are located in 2,438 farms with an average of heads per farm. The distribution of milk recorded cows by breed is: Italian Friesian 1,106,461 (93.01% of the total number of milk recorded cows), Italian Brown swiss breed 79,092 (6.65%), Italian Simmenthal breed 52,356 (4.40%). Tables of series n.2 refer to average milk production and average fat and protein percentage separately for cows at first, second, third and further calving. Productions refer to conventional 305 days lactations. 864,246 recorded lactations have over 200 days length. For this subset the average production is kg. 8,844 ± 2,449 with fat percentage of 3.74 ± 0.57 and protein percentage of 3.30 ± The Italian Fiesian breed has an average milk yield of kg. 9,411 ± 2,149 with fat percentage of 3.70 ± 0.53 and protein percentage of 3.26 ± The Italian Brown Swiss breed presents an average milk yield of kg. 7,192 ± 1,947 with fat percentage of 4.01 ± 0.50 and protein percentage of 3.54 ± The Italian Simmenthal breed has an average yield of kg. 6,678 ± 1,845 with fat percentage of 3.89 ± 0.51 and protein percentage of 3.39 ± EXPLANATORY NOTES Statistiche Ufficiali Official Statistics Page 4 of 7

5 Tables of series n.3 refer to median value 1 of 789,714 lactations with a length between 200 and 500 days; considering all data, the median value is 327 days. The median value for the Italian Brown swiss breed is 329 while for the Italian Friesian breed it is 331 days. Tables of series n.4 show the monthly calving distribution from July the 1 st 2015 to June the 30 th Tables of series n.5 report the distribution of calvings and abortions from July the 1 st 2015 to June the 30 th Abortions are 0.80% of the total observations. Only late abortions giving rise to new lactations have been considered. Distribution by sex and incidence of twin calvings from July the 1 st 2015 to June the 30 th 2016 are shown in tables of series n.6. Twin calvings are 2.45% of the total number of calvings. Percentage of male at birth is 51.15%. Tables of series n.7 report the distribution of farms and of recorded cows per farm. 8.8% of farms have less than 6 cows which represents 0.3% of recorded cows. Farms with less than 20 cows are 34.3% of the total number and include 4.3% of recorded cows. The corresponding values for the Italian Brown Swiss breed are 80.6% and 39.3% and for the Italian Friesian breed they are 29.3% and 2.3% respectively. Tables of series n.8 report the average age at calving (expressed in years, months and days) separately for the first four calvings, for all calvings and the average lactation number. Only cows whose birth date is certainly known have been considered. The average age at first calving is 2 years 4 months and 4 days; at second calving is 3 years 6 months and 8 days; at third calving 4 years 8 months and 1 days; at fourth calving 5 years 9 months and 29 days. The average calving age for the Italian Brown Swiss breed is 2 years 7 months and 21 days at first calving and 3 years 9 months and 27 days at second calving; for Italian Friesian breed it is 2 years 3 months and 14 days at first calving and 3 years 5 months and 17 days. The average lactation number is Appreciable differences across Provinces have been found. Tables of series n.9 show the median value of days open separately for the first 5 calvings and for the total observations 2. The median value of days open for all calving is 134 days, 129 days for primiparouses, 137 days for second calving cows, 137 days for third calving cows; values for the Italian Brown Swiss breed and Italian Friesian breed respectively 136 and 139 days. Tables from n.11 to n.18 summarize the processed data of 55 years of activity of the Central Office. Totals for each year from 1962 to 2016 are shown. Tables from n.19 to n.30 report the milk recording data of sheep from September the 1 st 2014 to August the 31 st 2015 (simply called year ). Data are monthly collected by official trained staff according to the special rules for sheep milk recording updated by Governmental Decree Tables of series n.19 show the situation of sheep milk recordings with regard to closed lactations in the year. Data are about total number of sheep, number of flocks and average number of recorded milk sheep per flock. 1 The median value rather than the average is used in case of distributions that are obviously not normal. 2 Only cows whose conception dates are knows have been considered.
