24 Deer breeders across the nation have began using a new combination of medications for immobilization of whitetail deer and other cervid species. However, this is not a new drug at all. Research has been done using this combination for many years with great results. Before compounding of these products, it was not feasible to use in the deer due to the strength of the medications. The FDA approved form of medetomidine is 1mg/mL. At that strength, a deer would need darted with over 10mLs. Precision Pharmacy based in Bakersfield, California, has come up with a solution to this problem and is compounding Medetomidine in combination with Ketamine at a concentration of 5mg/ ml and 150mg/mL, respectively. The medication comes already combined and is usually dosed at an average of 1mL/100 lbs body weight. This combination is extremely safe and effective. To explain a little about how these drugs work together, medetomidine is an alpha 2 agonist, similar to xylazine, but is proven to cause better analgesia and sedation than xylazine. Ketmaine is very commonly used in anesthesia in numerous species. It can also be given IV during a procedure to get the deer down longer, this is commonly referred to as bumping. When used together, the sedation is adequate for semen collection, laparoscopic AI and most other procedures necessary for deer. This combination is any length of time before administering reversal. The animals actually get up smoother with the ketamine on board. Usually following administration of reversal, the animals are awake within 10 minutes and standing within 20. This combination from Precision Pharmacy has been used in thousands of deer with incredible success. Thus the deer maintain a more constant steady state and the stress on their bodies is minimized. The combination is reversed easily with atipamezole. Precision Pharmacy is compounding atipamezole at 20mg/ ml so it is generally dosed a a 1:1 volume ratio of medetomidine/ketamine:atipamezole. Medetomidine is fully reversed with atipamezole, but ketamine is not reversable. However, it is not necessary to wait
