5 Village Animal Health Workers (VAHWs) People working for animal health service in their villages They have been selected to get a certificate from Director General of the of Animal Health and Production. 12,756 VAHWs are present in Cambodia They get money from their professional skills such as treatment of animals, vaccination and other activities related to livestock.

6 Retraining of VAHWs Retraining of VAHWs started in 2015 to keep them staying and working in their villages. The training courses are under the control of Department of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, General Directorate of Animal Health and Production. No certificate for VAHWs who participated in retraining, because they already have certificate at the beginning of the first training.

7 Technical staffs working in the department are, first, selected as trainers and appointed by General Directorate of Animal Health and Production Trainers are now from different sectors such as MAFF, University or NGO Trainers are Bachelor's degree holder in Animal Health and Production or equivalence to the degree and/or experiences at least 3 year teaching.

16 Why Kandal Province? Kandal Provine surrounds the Capital Phnom Penh, so that we can have an easy access to both large and small animal practices. The population, animal population, number of VAHWs are similar to the Cambodian average. The retrainning has not been conducted in the Province yet.

21 1. Retraining of VAHWs Retraining of VAHWs is conducted in each destrict of the Kandal Province. Lectures or hands on training are implemented by veterinarians in Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the faculty staffs of the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) Mobile clinics

Capacity development of large animal clinicians A collaboration of University of Tokyo and Miyazaki University to develop human resources in large animal clinics in MAFF and RUA A series of lectures and practices in Cambodia and laboratory training in University of Tokyo Establishment of mobile clinics as a teaching tool for retraining of VAHWs

23 3. Small animal clinics in RUA Improvement of clinical skills of small animal clinicians in the RUA Advanced clinical medicine in the RUA Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) for companion animals of wealthy people in Phnom Penh

24 4. Sustainability of the project A profit in the VTH small animal clinics will support large animal practice/mobile clinics in the rural area Redistribution of the wealth
