3 INTROUTION In 9, the discovery of penicillin revolutionized medicine. ver since, the use of antibiotics to treat and prevent bacterial infections has saved innumerable lives, enabled advancements in medical procedures like surgery and chemotherapy, and helped slow the spread of deadly infections. owever, after nearly 00 years of widespread antibiotic use, the threat posed by evolving bacteria possessing resistance to common antibiotics has emerged as one of the most significant global health issues of the st century. ntimicrobial resistance is present in every country, increases healthcare costs, and is accelerating due to the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in both people and animals. ntimicrobial resistance is a global health emergency that will seriously jeopardize progress in modern medicine. ¹ r. Tedros dhanom hebreyesus irector-eneral, WO The ability to treat infections quickly and accurately with the information obtained from antimicrobial susceptibility testing (ST) is of the utmost importance for combating resistance. ccess to an ST device with the most up-to-date antimicrobials is vital to expanding patient treatment options and improving patient outcomes. ¹World ealth Organization. (07, September 0). The world is running out of antibiotics, WO report confirms [Press Release]. Retrieved from: 3

5 T VLU O TRU MI OR ST urrent ST methods are based on assessing the ability of an antimicrobial to inhibit bacterial growth. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MI) is the level of antimicrobic required to achieve inhibition against the tested pathogen. owever, some ST systems calculate the MI value by extrapolating growth curves and applying dedicated algorithms. The Sensititre System generates true MI results based on actual growth of the organism. true MI reveals the difference between whether a bacterial isolate is susceptible, how susceptible the organism is against a particular drug, and the exact point at which the isolate becomes resistant. When comparing your MI results against the latest clinical breakpoints from UT and LSI, you can trust the value of a true MI to deliver the accuracy required for optimal patient outcomes, and to track emerging resistance. To be able to get an accurate measurement of MI for very specific drugs like vancomycin, for me, is wonderfully valuable. r. James McKinnell, ssistant Professor of Medicine, avid effen School of Medicine, University of alifornia, Los ngeles The Vizion igital MI Viewing System produces easy-to-read digital plate images, allowing users to easily read and record MI results while eliminating the potential for manual reading errors. 5
