Italy Cuneo (CU) marco.cullere@unipd.it Bernezzo C.R.A.S. collaborates with the A.S.L. and the wildlife protection organizations. Its mission is to recover, treat, rehabilitate and, where possible, free specimens of every kind of native wildlife found in difficulty. It also houses some individuals of alien species considered invasive and holds in temporary custody animals victims of judicial seizures. 2 Centro di recupero animali Otus Italy Bologna (BO) barbara.demori@unipd.it It is a Lipu recovery centre: Lipu is the association for the conservation of nature, the protection of biodiversity, the promotion of ecological culture in Italy. It deals with treating wild animals in the various recovery centres, also informing people on the best way to help the fauna in difficulty. 3 Centro di recupero fauna selvatica Semproniano Italy Semproniano (GR) barbara.demori@unipd.it Reference centre for the reception of dangerous animals by the Ministry of the Environment and, since 2007, is recognized as a Centre for the Conservation of the Wildlife Situation by the Tuscany Region. The CRASE currently hosts about 500 animals of a hundred species. The effective recovery and reintegration practices implemented by CRASE ensure that new animals arrive, and others return to their natural environment, so that the list is to be considered constantly updated. 4 Parco Naturale Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Italy Paneveggio (TN) giorgio.marchesini@unipd.it The institutional aims of the Paneveggio - Pale di San Martino Natural Park are the protection of natural and environmental characteristics, the promotion of scientific study and the social use of environmental goods.

2 5 Parco Nazionale Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise Italy Pescasseroli (AQ) flaviana.gottardo@unipd.it The objectives of the Park Authority are those indicated by the Framework Law on protected areas: Defending the environment in its original aspects, creating the conditions for the development of the living conditions of the local populations based on conservation, enhancement and rational management of natural and cultural resources that the protected area holds, promotion and enhancement of the territory, study of the territory in depth and extended to all its historical, social, geological, faunal and vegetational components. 6 Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini Italy Visso (MC) The National Park of the Sibillini Mountains is a noneconomic public body. Its primary purpose is the conservation of the natural and paranatural environment, including the monitoring and protection of animal species (especially those reintroduced) and precious plants for biodiversity. 7 The Centre for Ocean Research and Education Bahamas Eleuthera, The Bahamas marco.patruno@unipd.it Conduct applied scientific marine research with conservation driven goals in sensitive and vulnerable ecosystems of Eleuthera, and surrounding Family Islands. Establish educational initiatives designed to engage Bahamian students at a grass roots level of marine research, promoting the value of vulnerable marine resources and involving the communities of Eleuthera into the data-collection process. Create overseas partnerships with universities and schools to visit Eleuthera and take part in these projects for high school, undergraduate and postgraduate studies. This will further foster international relationships and promote itself as a multicultural platform for knowledge exchange and collaborations.

To achieve this goal, these structures work coordinated in conservation plans, where education and environmental education are essential activities. 10 Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle SRL Italia Bergamo (BG) giorgio.marchesini@unipd.it The Cornelle Park aims at protecting endangered animal species. As a modern zoological garden they assume this stimulating commitment to the conservation of biodiversity, through conservation - research education. 11 Parco Faunistico Valcorba Italia Pozzonovo (PD) Today zoos must be places where science, love of nature and education meet. The Parco Valcorba since its inauguration pursues the triple mission of research, conservation and education to respect biodiversity. 12 Parco Natura Viva Italia Bussolengo (VR) barbara.demori@unipd.it lieta.marinelli@unip.it simona.normando@unipd.it The Parco Natura Viva in Bussolengo (VR) serves as a protection centre for endangered animal species. Today the institutional functions of a modern zoo embrace the conservation of biodiversity under many aspects and can be summarized in three foundations: conservation (in situ and ex situ), research, environmental education.

4 13 Safari Ravenna Italia Ravenna (RA) 14 Zoo di Pistoia Italia Pistoia (PT) 15 Zoom Torino Italia Cumiana (TO) The Wildlife and Safari Park Safari Ravenna is a zero-impact natural area that has been studied to enhance the role of biodiversity conservation, in order to protect wildlife, protect the welfare of different animal species and safeguard those at risk of extinction. The Zoological Garden of Pistoia is a park with over 400 animals and 7 hectares of extension; in continuous expansion. Due to the size and importance of the teaching and conservation of animal species, the park is one of the main structures of this kind in Italy. The mission is to represent a centre to increase the knowledge in the public of biodiversity and its value for human life. This bio park aims to safeguard biodiversity, through research and ex situ training, conservation programs of endangered species and above all through the education of the visitor who, living the emotional experience of immersion in habitats as faithful as possible to those of origin, learn to know and respect them. 16 Alpen Zoo Austria Innsbruck barbara.demori@unipd.it The Alpenzoo is dedicated as most modern zoos and aquaria to conservation. The Alpenzoo is also member and in close contact with many national and international conservation organizations. 17 Opel Zoo Germania Kronberg im Taunus barbara.demori@unipd.it The Opel zoo is located between the scenic slopes of the Vordertaunus between Kronberg and Königstein. It hosts about 1600 animals coming from over 230 species, mainly from Africa, Asia and Europe. Circular paths and nature trails in this 27-hectare zoo offer unobstructed insights into the variously designed enclosures, which are otherwise only possible with outdoor observations.

5 18 Riga Zoo Lettonia Riga The basic function of all zoos is defined in the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy. Since 1992 the Riga Zoo is a member of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria). The membership in this organization means that the zoo has to maintain high standards in animal welfare as well as other aspects of the zoo s operation. In accordance with the strategic aims set by EAZA, the Riga Zoo has undertaken to participate in the conservation of biodiversity, to invest in projects devoted to the protection of nature and to carry out environmental education. The centre focuses on the immediate post-injury phase, with research into the pathophysiology of injury and a pathway to ensure the translation of research into practice and into policy. World class research is coupled with international education and dissemination programmes to improve care and outcomes of trauma patients worldwide.

The Department of Clinical Sciences & Advanced Medicine plays a vital role in Penn Vet's three-part mission to educate veterinarians and the public about animal health, provide service to the public by treating sick pets and other small animals, and develop new approaches through research to improve companion animal health. At the Sanitary Kennel, stray dogs are waiting to be returned to the owner or entrusted to individuals or associations. The City of Donkeys is the first experimental centre in northern Italy for training and research on activities and therapies assisted with animals. The activities of the association: Training courses for operators in the activities of Mediation with the Donkey (onotherapy), Ono-didactics for schools with educational paths, Ono-wellness paths aimed at the well-being of people Ono-tourism, walks for children with families and schools, Ono-therapy, pet-therapy with the donkey and team of trained specialists. The mission of L.Eu.Di.Ca. is to promote the correct relationship between animals and people and to combat mistreatment. The protectionist culture of all animal species represents a founding value for Leudica. The association is part of the voluntary associations with the classification PD 315.
