3 Program - Dr. Manuel Carlos AMA Mexico A.C. - Saving the Turtles Dr. Manuel L. Carlos is the president of AMA Mexico A.C., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the natural environment and sea turtle population of the North Shore of the Bay of Banderas. Dr. Carlos is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and also a Founding Faculty Member and Professor Emeritus at CSU Monterey Bay. Ann Wyckoff Carlos is AMA Mexico s Education Coordinator. She is responsible for developing and presenting bilingual education programs about the sea turtles of the Bay of Banderas. Founded by Dr. Emanuel and Ann Carlos, AMA Mexico (Association for Environmental Unity in Mexico) is a Mexican non-profit organization devoted to the protection of the natural resources and ecology of Mexico s Pacific Coast. Their focus is on the conservation of the endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtle and its nesting habitat on the north shore of Bahia de Banderas (the Bay of Banderas), in the State of Nayarit, just 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of Puerto Vallarta. AMA supports student interns and volunteers who work to protect Mexico s natural resources, providing stipends for staff biologists and student interns. AMA has environmental education at different levels, and its volunteers give nightly turtle talks at hatchling liberation time. They are also producing educational materials including children s books about Sea Turtles is part of AMA Mexico s School Outreach Program Originally, three species nested there, the Leatherback, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley. Now only the Olive Ridley remains. At the start only 500 nests were active. Without conservation efforts, the turtle nests were being robbed of their eggs. Both animals and humans were culprits, as the eggs were saleable for $1 to $2 apiece, while the average local wage was $8 per day. Since the turtles were protected, this was all black market activity, and allowed some people to get very rich. Coastal development also competes for the turtle habitat and beach contamination and human activity destroy nests. Prior to 2002, the Nuevo Vallarta Sea Turtle Preserve (NVSTP) was open only six months of the year. However, observing that a significant number of turtles nested during the winter/spring low season, Professor Carlos offered to keep the Preserve open from January 1 to June 15 by employing biologists to patrol the beach, relocate turtle nests into nesting corrals and collect data. He also proposed starting an environmental information program for visitors to the Preserve. It is now open year-round.
4 With the current collection of over 10,000 Olive Ridley nests each year, the Nuevo Vallarta beach has become the largest nesting beach for endangered Sea Turtles in the region. AMA provides education of future generations showing how conservation supports economics which supports family livelihood connecting the health of the bay and employment. Five thousand children from 40 Mexican communities participate in activities each year that encourage them to become stewards of the oceans. By working with Mexico s Ministry of Education in Nayarit s local schools and by offering hands-on experience during hatchling releases. They hope to instill in these eager visitors to the Nuevo Vallarta Sea Turtle Preserve a love of the sea and all its precious creatures. Their work is community centered focusing on the interplay between the environment and economic development. They explain to the community that future work is dependent on tourism, and tourism is dependent on healthy beaches and oceans. They are doing more than saving a species, they are reaching a people and educating them in economics and international spirit. Their passion is to go somewhere to give, and leave it better than they found it. The heart-shaped Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) adult can weigh as much as 100 pounds. Its hard green shell usually measures about 30 inches in length. Olive Ridley females are unique among other marine turtles in that they nest two to three times every year, sometimes arriving on the beach in great numbers known as arribadas. Adult male Olive Ridleys never return to land as mating occurs in the sea just off shore. Female Olive Ridley sea turtles remember where they were born. It is believed that by using their sense of smell, feel for magnetic fields they imprint the place of their birth and return there to lay their eggs year after year. The eggs incubate for 45 to 60 days, and then 80 to 120 hatchlings emerge from the nest. The nests that have been relocated to incubation corrals at the Nuevo Vallarta Sea Turtle Preserve are carefully monitored. After hatching, the baby turtles are returned safely to the sea at sunset, usually within 24 hours of their birth.
