Florida amed the Sunshine State, Florida is the southern N most state on the U.S. mainland. The state s ideal warm climate has made it one of the most popular spots for vacations and retirements.

It rarely freezes as far south as Miami, and because of it s sunshine is the leading producer of oranges and grapefruits.

State Symbols Mocking Bird Palmetto Palm Orange Blossom Columbia & Suwannee County History Columbia County - Established in 1832 from St. Johns County and was named in honor of Christopher Columbus. The Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto founded a large village on the site of presentday Lake City. In 1956, the Columbia County area Thoroughbred industry received a boost when Needles became the first Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. Suwannee County - The thirty-seventh county created in the State of Florida, Suwannee County, was formed on December 21, 1858, out of the western portion of Columbia County. Named for the river immortalized by Stephen Foster (who never visited it, but used the name because it was more euphonious than other river names), Suwannee is sometimes thought to originate from the Indian word for Echo River or Muddy Waters. Out of many possible origins, another possible origin is a corruption of the Spanish name for the river and Spanish mission on its banks, Rio San Juan de Guacara, which translates into the River of Saint John of Guacara. By the late 1700 s, most maps showed the river s name as simply San Juan. Apparently, Creek Indians moving from Alabama in the late 1700 s as white settlers forced them off their ancestral property intermarried with runaway slaves and the few Timucua Indians that remained. Their descendants became the Seminole people and began calling the river San Juanee after a corruption of the nearby Spanish mission
