1 Family Groups Dinosaurs evolved from the class of backboned animals called Reptiles. They are split into two major groups (orders) based on the structure of their pelvis (hip bone). These groups are then divided into suborders and then families depending on similarities in their bone structure. Order One These are called the lizard hipped dinosaurs (Saurichia), which had a pelvis similar to that of a large lizard. It included the following families: a) Giant plant eaters (Sauropods): Diplodocus b) Big meat eaters (Carnosaurs): Tyrannosaurus c) Small meat eaters (Coelurosaurs): Ornithomimus d) Large clawed meat eaters (Deinonychosaurs): Velociraptor...and eventually the true birds. Order Two These are called the bird hipped dinosaurs (Ornithischia), which had a pelvis similar to a modern bird. They were all herbivores and included the following families: e) Horned (Ceratopsia): Triceratops f) Bird-like feet (Ornithopoda): Iguanodon g) Dome headed (Pachycephalosaurids): Pachycephalosaurus h) Plated (Stegosaurids): Stegosaurus i) Armoured (Ankylosaurids): Ankylosaurus. From the dinosaur file see if you can assign two more dinosaur names to each of the nine families above. a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) There is only one other armoured dinosaur in the file. Can you find it?
