The holotype was olleted alive from a polyhaete olony in the intertidal region of Sandspit, Karahi. [lhe speies an be diagnosed on the basis of the following haraters: a dome-shaped rostrum, a lightly armed pleotelson, having a submarginal setose ridge; an extended maxilliped basis and a ephalon overel with dark pigrnent in pathes, The speies will also be the first asellotan representative from Pakistan oast. Key words: New speies,loeropsis, Isopoda, Pakistan, Introdution The suborder Asellota Latreille, 803 is one of the most diverse groups ofisopods, omprising about 25 Oo of all the marine speies. Members of the family Joeropsidae Nordenstam, 933 have been known from all the ontinents and oeans. Nevertheless no report of any asellote has been published from Pakistan. This paper desribes new speies of the genusjoeropsis, and also represents the.first reord for the suborder from our area. The holotype is housed in the repository of Marine Referene Colletion & Resoure Centre (MRC), University of Karahi. Joeropsis karahiensis sp. nov. (Figs. -4) Diagnosis : The speies an be diagnosed on the basis of the following haraters : a dome-shaped rostrum, a lightly armed pleotelson, having a submarginal setose ridge, an extended maxilliped basis and a ephalon overed with dark pigment in pathes. Material: Holotype MRC Cat. No. ISO 0, male, Sandspit, Karahi, 26th Marh, 999 from a polyhaete olony (Sabellaria spinulosa) at low tide. Desription : Total length 3.0 mm, body (Fig. 2A) parallel-sided, about 4 times longer than wide. Half of dorsal surfae of head overed with dark pigment path (Fig. IA) ; lateral surfae of almost all pereonites with small dark pigment spots. Antero-lateral angles of ephalon not very aute; 8

Rostrum (Fig. 2B) dome shaped, with transparent sales subapially and fringe of hair apially. Lateral margin of pereonites smooth, few setae in the submarginal area, lateral margin of pleotelson with 4-5 dentiles (Fig. 2A). Antenna (Fig. 2C) of 2 pedunular and 4 flagellar segments, surfae with few granules, basal pedunular segment the longest, its margins produed into transparent fringe of shallowly rounded teeth and few setae; this membrane extends to otherjoints; penultimate flagellarjoint with 2 strongly developed asthetass, ultimate joint small, with 7 small and large setae. Antenna 2 (Fig. 2D) of 6 segments; basal segment the longest, almost all margins produed into transparent funges. Mandibles (Fig. 3A, B) asymmetrial. Right mandible with a palp of 3 aniles; spine row of 7 spines on left, 9 on right; molar slender, tapering. Maxilla (Fig. 3C) inner ramus with 6 dista setae; outer ramus with 9 stout dentate spines. Maxilla 2 (Fig. 3D) inner ramus with 6 simple setae; outer lobes eah bearing 4 setae. Maxilliped (Fig. 3) endite broad, bearing four oupling hooks, medio-distally emarginate, armed with 5 stout, flattened spines; palp (Fig. 3F) of 5 artiles, penultimate artile the longest. Pereiopods similar (Fig. 4A, B) without any armature exept for few setae on all the segments, the datylus with three terminal ungui (Fig. 4B, D). PIeopod (Fig. 4) laterodistal lobes triangular, blunt; mesiodistal lobes triangular, with 2-3 marginal setae. Uropod (Fig. 2A") with mediodistal angle not hook like but aute, inner ramus bearing 6 setae, outer ramus shorter with 9 long and short setae. Female: Unknown. Remarks: The genusjoeropsis Koehler, 885 was the only one genus in the family Joeropsidae until Just (200) desribed two new genera Rugo7oeroPsis and SaPhoioeroPsis from the lower shelf and upper bathyal of southeastern Australia. The genusloeropsis ontains 54 widespread speies in the tropial and temperate waters Uust, 200).JoeroPsis rathbzanae is probably pantropial osmopolite (Menzies and Glynn, 968). From the Indian Oean, 23 speies have been summarized by Kensley (200), and 7 speies were desribed as new by Kensley and Shotte (2002), but no speies were olleted for the northern Arabian Sea. Kensley and Shotte (2002) gave five haraters for disriminating Joeropsis speies: "degree of setation of the body; serration of the lateral margins of the ephalon; shape of the rostrum; presene and absene ofa strong mediodista tooth on the uropodal protopods; serration of the lateral margins of the pleon", and olour pattern of live or freshly dead speimens. Using Kensley and Shottes (2002) keyj karahiensis an be inluded within the speies group having pleotelson margin fewer than 7 teeth. However the teeth in our speimen are visible only under high magnifiation, also the pleotelson is distint from other speies having a submarginal row of setae on the ridge whih perhaps separates. harahiensis from known ongeners (Shotte, pers: omm. Q. B. K). Two other speies,. waltervadi Kensley, 975 andf. biarinata Just, 200, differ from other speies offoeropsis in having suh longitudinal ridges running along the dorsum, whih is onfined to the pereon inl. waltervadi while sharp keel extends to the pleotelson in J. biarinata. In J. karahiensis the pattern of longitudinal ridges is different from the above given patterns in the two speies, here being onfined only to the pleotelson. Other haraters in whihj. karahiensis differs from alljoeropsis speies, is the maxilliped
