112 21 Spring Peeper The red markings in the tail fin is blood from hemorrhages likely caused by some disease. This is reasonably common to see. 22 Mink Frog Venter with a yellowish cast. 23 Mink Frog 24 American Bullfrog Some stippling is visible on this metamorph. 25 Spring Peeper 26 American Bullfrog 27 Gray Treefrog Red-tail-induced morphotype. This individual came from a pool with a high number of water tigers. 28 Eastern Newt 29 Mink Frog 30 Eastern Newt 31 Wood Frog Wood Frog 32 This is a rather unusual looking Wood Frog tadpole. The red in the tail is blood from hemorrhages Spring Peeper Gray Treefrog This individual has particularly dark and extensive markings on the tail fins. Red-tail-induced morphotype. This one's fins are shredded from aggressive predator attacks. 35 Eastern Red-backed Salamander Unstriped "lead-backed" morph 36 Gray Treefrog 37 American Bullfrog Patterning could recall Mink Frog. 38 Green Frog 39 Spotted Salamander 40 Eastern Red-backed Salamander Striped morph.
113 41 The Complex 42 Spotted Salamander 43 Spotted Salamander 44 Chorus Frog 45 Eastern Newt The Complex 46 This is almost certainly a male Jefferson Salamander [it is definitely a male]. Polyploid males are very rare but may occur as regularly as one in 100 individuals, so DNA analysis is needed to say for sure. 47 Wood Frog The Complex American Toad 50 Spotted Salamander 51 The Complex 52 Northern Leopard Frog 53 Pickerel Frog 54 Spotted Salamander The Complex Chorus Frog 57 American Toad The Complex 58 The gray embryos are dead and a high proportion of these in a given mass suggest that it is laid by a polyploid and not by a female from one of the pure species. This is a Pelee Island polyploid and is a mix of Blue-spotted and Smallmouth influences. Possible genome combinations could be LT, LLT, LTT, LLLT, or LTTT. This mid-stage is the most difficult to discern The Complex from Spotted. A trace of the low-contrast banding pattern is still evident on the dorsum. Spotted are rarely this contrasting looking. 59 Northern Leopard Frog Chorus Frog 60 The bicoloured tail musculature is barely visible in this specimen, which occurs in some late-stage individuals.
114 61 Four-toed Salamander 62 Chorus Frog This individual lacks stippling on the head. 63 The Complex This individual came from a population where Blue-spotted is the only sperm donor. This could be a female Blue-spotted, or an LJ, LLJ, or LLLJ polyploid. 64 Northern Two-lined Salamander 65 Northern Leopard Frog 66 Mink Frog 67 Northern Two-lined Salamander 68 Green Frog 69 American Bullfrog 70 American Bullfrog 71 Northern Two-lined Salamander 72 Chorus Frog Spotted Salamander 73 This mid-stage is the most difficult to discern from The Complex. Note that there is no trace of dorsal banding. 74 Four-toed Salamander 75 American Toad 76 Mink Frog 77 Mink Frog 78 Spotted Salamander 79 Mink Frog 80 Northern Leopard Frog
115 81 Green Frog 82 Northern Leopard Frog 83 Wood Frog The Complex 84 Dorsal views are not great for ID of Ambystoma, but the black-and-yellow tail mosaic can be clearly seen in this individual. 85 The Complex This is a particularly dark individual. 86 Mink Frog 87 Green Frog 88 Northern Leopard Frog The intestinal coil is visible as a series of pinkish-white contours reflected by the sun. 89 Northern Leopard Frog 90 Mink Frog Northern Leopard Frog Not many diagnostic features can be seen in this photo, but the clear tail fins 91 are enough to give this individual away. 92 Northern Leopard Frog 93 Green Frog 94 Eastern Newt 95 Eastern Newt 96 Spotted Salamander 97 Green Frog 98 Mudpuppy 99 Green Frog 100 a) Green Frog b) Northern Leopard Frog The tail fin is largely opaque and without lots of yellow blocky markings. The obscure dorsal spotting and cross-banded hind legs (barely visible) give this individual away. These two were caught on the same day in late May. It shows the typical differences between these two species in the first portion of the season. The Leopard Frogs (born 6 weeks earlier) have no hind leg development and are smaller. The Green Frog larvae show hind leg buds and are much larger. 101 Spring Peeper 102 Pickerel Frog 103 Boreal Chorus Frog (Westerns are never green) 104 Mink Frog 105 Eastern Red-backed Salamander
