1 Comparing and Contrasting: Snowball Fight DACHSHUNDS Materials Dachshund reading passages on page 2 The Best Pet, Dachshunds: Things to Consider, and Both signs (pages 3-6), posted in 3 corners of the classroom. Statement sheets (pages 6-16) cut in half, one half for each student Answer Key (Page 17) Instructions Have students read the 2 passages about dachshunds (page 2). Give each student a half sheet of paper with a statement on it. Tell them to crumple it up like a snowball. Explain to students that they will be having a snowball fight. During the fight, they will throw paper snowballs at each other without running or yelling. When told to freeze, they need to stop the fight immediately. Begin the snowball fight, and stop it when appropriate. Have each student choose one snowball, open it up, and consider whether the statement is true for only 1 of the passages about dachshunds, or if it was a similarity between the two passages. They should refer to the passages for evidence. Students should then go to the appropriate corner of the room, depending on their statement. For example, if they believe their statement applies only to The Best Pet, then they should stand near that sign. Students can discuss whether they agree or disagree with the other students in their corner, and then repeat the game!

Anybody who is considering getting a pet should get a dachshund. Dachshunds make great pets for several reasons. First, dachshunds are extremely loyal animals. Once they warm up to you, they will love you and want to protect you forever. Because of this, they make great guard dogs despite their small size. They generally bark loudly anytime strangers approach, making you aware of possible dangers. Also, dachshunds are great pets to have if you live in an apartment or a small house without a backyard. Because they are so small, they don t need as much space to play! Finally, dachshunds have great personalities and are so much fun to have around! They enjoy playing and will provide you with countless hours of entertainment. Dachshunds also love to snuggle and sit in your lap, preferring to be close to their owners. They always want to be with you, giving you a constant companion! Of all of the pets you could get, dachshunds are the best possible choice. You will not regret getting one! Dachshunds: Things to Consider Choosing the best pet for you can be very tricky. If you are thinking about getting a dachshund, then there are several factors that you should consider. Dachshunds, even though they are small, have a very loud, deep bark. Once they start barking, it can be very difficult to get them to stop, and many dachshunds will bark at any person they see. This loud bark can disturb close neighbors and be very frustrating to the dog owner. Another factor to consider is a dachshund s health. The unusual shape of the dachshund makes it likely to have back problems. Dachshunds shouldn t jump from high places like couches. If they gain a lot of weight, it can make the risk of having back problems even higher. You will have to monitor a dachshund s weight and activity carefully. Dachshunds are very social creatures and will constantly want to be around you. While having a loyal companion can be fun, it can sometimes cause problems. Dachshunds often get separation anxiety when you are away from them, causing them to bark, whine, chew, or urinate. In conclusion, think carefully before choosing a dachshund as a pet. Although they are very cute, loyal companions, there are many other issues to consider.
